Software
NOS - This is the Network Operating System. It is a suit of programs that allow computers to
communicate with each other and share programs, data, messages and peripherals that are
connected to them.
DOS - This is the Disk Operating System that runs on each local PC workstation.
Applications programs - These are the programs that users run to perform whatever task they need to
do. Examples are Wordprocessors, Database management programs, Graphics programs etc.
Computer Protocols - These are the conventions or rules for communication between two or more
computers. Netware basically uses the IPX/SPX or Internetwork Packet eXchange and Sequenced
Packet eXchange protocols for communication between computers. The basic job of this pair is to
move data around the network and to ensure that it arrives in the same order in which it is sent.
They break the data to be sent into the right size packets for moving around the network and
reassemble the packets into data for the receiving computer. Netware can also work with other
protocols such as Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol or TCP/IP, and Apple Talk for
Macintosh computers. TCP/IP is the protocol for communication on the Internet as well as on
UNIX LANs. |
