Network users and groups
The system supervisor or network manager is responsible for the management of the users of the
network. They decide valid usernames (names that Netware recognises as valid connection names),
that users can use when they need to connect and use network services. They are also responsible for
assigning the subdirectories to which each user has access
Users - are any people who are allowed to work on a computer network
Usernames - these are the network ‘identities’ of people who are can connect to the network. A user
must use a valid username to connect to the network.
Passwords - you can either force users to enter a password and change it regularly to increase security on the system. This is particularly the case with users who have special privileges. Ordinary users
with limited privileges can have single passwords if only one person is to connect as that user, or no
password if the username is computer dependent rather than person dependant (the particular
computer automatically logs in as a specific user when it is turned on)
Groups - these are logical groupings of users so that rights and privileges can be quickly assigned to
the group and then all users who are members of the group get those rights. It is a good management
method to employ in a network environment to grant privileges to users.
Organisation of groups and users - when planning how a network will be used by the users, you will
need to think about the organisation before adding users and groups. Think about who will be users
and when you have decided upon this, how they can be logically grouped. Once the users and groups
have been entered, give the groups the rights and privileges that you deem necessary. Users rights
should predominantly arise because of membership of a group or groups. It is much easier to plan this
way
For Example:
I have 20 users USER1 to USER20.
Requirements:
USER1 to USER9 need to use the financial spreadsheet package which is in the directory
WINAPPS\SPREADS
USER14 to USER19 need to use the Graphics package APPS\GRAPHICS
USER15, USER18 and USER20 needs a design package which is in the directory APPS\DESIGN
All users required access to the wordprocessing which is in the directory APPS\WP
I would create:
a GRAPHICS group with rights to the APPS\GRAPHICS subdirectory and USER14 to USER19 would be members and so get their rights to use these programs.
a DESIGN group with rights to the APPS\ DESIGN subdirectory and USER15, USER18 and USER20 would be members and so get their rights to use these programs.
a SPREADS group with rights to the APPS\SPREADS subdirectory and USER1 to USER9 would be members and so get their rights to use these programs.
finally I would assign the group EVERYONE access to the APPS\WP, and as all users are members of this group all would get the necessary rights to use these programs.
There are many ways of adding users and groups to a network and several ways of adding multiple
users. One Netware Utility that you will often use is the SYSCON utility and it is used to add and
delete users and groups, assign rights, restrict access and generally set up user accounts. Given below
is how to perform several common tasks with the SYSCON Menu Utility.
ADDING USERS
- Start SYSCON and select User Information from the main menu. A list of users appears.
- To add a user press Insert and then type the name of the new user.
- Press enter to confirm creation of the users home directory (if this is what you want to occur).
The mail directory and home directory will automatically be added to the trustee list for those
directories and given certain rights in those directories.
- Complete other tasks such as: create a login script, add to groups, set any restrictions, set a
password, etc.
WORKING WITH A USER'S ACCOUNT
- Start SYSCON and select user information from the main menu. A list of existing usera
appears.
- Highlight the user with which you want to work and press Enter. The User Information menu
appears.
- Select the option relevant to the aspect of the user's account that you want to change. To
change the user's password, for example, select Change Password
TO CREATE, DELETE, OR RENAME A GROUP WITH SYSCON
- Start SYSCON and select Group Information from the main menu. A list of existing group
names appears.
- To add a new group, press Ins. Netware prompts you to enter the group's name. Type the
name and press Enter, and the new name is added to the group list.
- To change a group name, highlight the name and press F3. A prompt tells you to revise the
group name. After you change the name and press Enter, the list is updated to show your
change.
- To delete a group name, highlight the name and press Delete. After you confirm that you
want to delete the name, it disappears from the list.
ADDING USERS TO, OR REMOVING USERS FROM A GROUP
- Start SYSCON and select Group Information from the main menu. A list of groups appears.
- Select the group to which you want to add users. The Group Information menu appears.
- Select the member list option. A list of the group's current members appears on screen.
- To add users to this group press Insert. A list of the server's users appears. Highlight one you
want to add and press Enter, or mark multiple users with the F5 key and press Enter.
- To remove users, highlight the name you want to remove and press Delete, or mark multiple
users by pressing F5 and then press Delete
