For the second year, the Alamo Badminton Club hosted the badminton event in the Inner City Games on May 17th and 18th. The Inner City Games San Antonio is a program during the summer that encourages kids to stay drug- and trouble-free by offering over one dozen different sports events including Equestrian, Basketball, and Badminton. All the sports events require no entry fee, just 110% from all athletes. The organizers provide equipment, lunch, t-shirts, and Sea World passes to all competitors and volunteers. All participants also receive medals for their effort, no matter the final outcome of each event. The main theme of all Inner City events throughout the country is that everyone is a winner. This year, the Inner City badminton event had a low turnout, as the other 1,000+ S.A.I.S.D. badminton players did not show up. But that did not deter the Alamo Badminton Club players. They used this event to practice on Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles and to maintain and re-establish kings and queens of the different disciplines. This tournament allows more of the grassroot players to be exposed to the tournament routines and environment. They get to experience the pressure, the glory, and most importantly, the fun. Below are some pictures of the two-day badminton event.
Robert and Scottie knew they both had a forehand shot.
So tactfully, their opponents often went down the middle to encourage
confusion. However, the two boys fought on to beat a few doubles partners.

Nancy could not have enjoyed her first tournament more
if she had paired up with anyone else. She gained the experience of handling
the front in Mixed Doubles while Xavier fearlessly controlled the back.

Fernando, with partner Ralph, fights tirelessly to defend
against twin brothers, Sergio and Xavier. Perhaps he's trying so hard
because his mom is right behind him watching!

Luis has his game face on as he gets ready to return
a serve from Matthew Gaitain in the Under-12 Boys Singles final.
|
Matthew, being younger that his Mixed Doubles partner
Lynda, was responsible for the front. He stood tall as Lynda executed
a drop on the opponent. Matthew just knew the next shot would be a re-drop.

Tina manages easily to maintain her Girls Singles Champion
title as she whizzed through to the finals and then defeated Lynda Guerrero.

Amy remains focused during her Under-16 Girls Doubles
final with partner Victoria Rodriguez as they compete against teammates
Lynda and Tina.
