History of ATS

From the article taken from first ATS newsletter dated 28th. August 1991.

Tamil families and UT students were getting together at the Gateway Hall for Pongal, Tamil New year & Diwali & having a potluck dinner. Dr. Raghunathan was coordinating the events & maintained an address list. A few Tamil students from UT were actively involved in providing small skits, mimicry, songs etc as entertainment before the lunch or dinner. They did have picnic & Saranathan Drama ever year even at this early times when there were just about 30-50 families in Austin. After the food the main feature used to be each couple who were new to town would come on stage & introduce themselves - where they work, when they moved & from where, where they live etc etc. Couple who were leaving town will come on stage to say where they were going & said farewell.

Austin Tamil Sangam : After long planning and disscusions with many members of the Indian community with interest in Tamil Language and culture, finally a new association was formed. This was done after intense discussion in a meeting on Aug 24th 1991, at RLM Hall 4.102.

Aims : The aim of this association is to promote an understanding of Tamil culture and language among both members & non-members of this association, to help assist newcomers of similar interest into the community and to act as helpful liaison to other Indian Associations in the region as well as other regional and national organizations.

Committees : With this aim we formed several committees and had several eager volunteers to these committees. The various committees were Newsletter, Social & Cultural (Organising Food & Cultural events) , Philosophical, Social Service, Student Liaison (which later became Tamil Students Association) & Tamil Language.

Organisation : By unanimous consent Dr. Satasivan was elected as the First President of the newly formed Association. Dr. Vidyashankar Kaushik was elected as the First Vice President. The first starting year went fron Aug. 91 until Dec 92.

Newsletter : We propose to send periodic newsletters informing the activities and other useful information. First newsletter that was sent was dated August 28 1991 announcing the formation of ATS, introducing the committee members & announcing about our inaugural program. Our first Inaugural program as a Sangam was a local talent show on September 14th on a Pillaiyar Chadhurthi weekend at Batts Hall.

Directory : Austin Tamil Sangam prepares annual directory of all tamilians and anyone who is interested in the our activities, living in Austin & its surrounding areas to be distributed amoung its members. Please let us know if there is any change of address or corrections to our existing mailing list. Also please introduce us to any new people who have moved to the Austin area who would like to be included in our list.
