Stoichkov says he will not return to playing
SOFIA, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Bulgaria's former striker Hristo
Stoichkov said on Thursday he would not play again after being
appointed assistant to the head coaches of the country's two
national teams.
"I do not think of playing any more or anywhere," the
33-year-old Stoichkov said in an interview in sports daily 7 Dni
Sport.
"This is a very hard moment as such a decision is very
painful," Stoichkov said.
The newspaper interview offered the firmest word so far from
Stoichkov that he would not resume his playing career after his
contract with Japan's Kashiwa Reysol expired a couple of months
ago.
After 17 years and 37 goals for his country, Stoichkov
retired from international soccer in June after Bulgaria's
European qualifying match against England, his 83rd appearance
for the national team.
Earlier this week he was appointed as assistant to Dimitar
Dimitrov and Stoicho Mladenov, head coaches of the senior and
under-21 teams respectively.
"I took everything from Bulgarian soccer during my long
career as a player and now I have to make some return for it,"
Stoichkov said.
"I am ready for the new challenge...and I will not accept
money for this job," he added.
The 1994 European Footballer of the Year said he wanted to
attend a coaching school in Germany or Italy.
Stoichkov helped Bulgaria to reach the World Cup semifinals
for the first time in 1994. In 1992 he won the European Cup with
Barcelona.

Stoichkov has moved into a new soccer role with his appointment
as assistant to the head coaches of the country's two national
teams.
The 33-year-old forward is to help Dimitar Dimitrov and
Stoicho Mladenov, who are being offered an extension to their
contracts as head coaches of the senior and under-21 teams
respectively until June 2002.
Stoichkov, who is to attend a European coaching school soon,
will not be paid for his job as an assistant, a soccer official
said on Wednesday.
The veteran striker retired from the national team two
months ago in Bulgaria's European qualifying match against
England, his 83rd appearance for his country.

Stoichkov named Bulgaria national team coach
SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) -- Bulgaria's most popular
soccer player Hristo Stoichkov has been
approved by the country's soccer federation as
coach of the national team, sports officials
announced Wednesday.
The 33-year-old midfielder, considered in
Bulgaria the country's most prominent ambassador to the world in
recent years, will run the team together with sports manager
Dimitar Dimitrov.
Stoichkov's career peaked during the 1994 World Cup finals in the
United States where Bulgaria clinched its all-time best fourth place.
The sturdy, left-footed player shared the leading scorer standings
with six goals.
In 1994, he also collected the European Player of the Year award
after helping Spanish soccer giant FC Barcelona to its fourth
successive Spanish league title.
Two years later, he left Barcelona following numerous run-ins with
former coach Louis van Gaal and returned to his native club of
CSKA Sofia.
In 1998, he moved to Japan where he signed with Kashiway
Reysol of the J-League.

Hristo Stoichkov and Stefka Kostadinova are organizing a charitable tennis tournament for children,which starts on the 25th of October in Plovdiv.Both of them will go out in the tennis court to show some demonstrative shots on the ball.
Hristo will pass a special preparation for a return to the active sport.He will try to arrange a friendly meeting between the teams of Bulgaria and Danmark.
He is still in Barcelona with Dimitar Dimitrov.They had watched the trainings of the two teams from Barcelona and were present to the Barcelona-Fiorentina match(4:2).

Lubo Penev invites Hristo in CSKA
The president of CSKA Luboslav Penev visitted his friend and ex-teammate Hristo Stoichkov,who is recovering in the combat sanatorium in Bankja with the intention to invite him in the leadership of CSKA,as people close to both football legends said.
Lubo had called Hristo to inform him about his visit in advance,after he couldn't visit him during his treatment in Combat Medical Academy.

The megastar of Bulgarian football was among the first to call to Kiev to learn details of the match of the national team.Hristo called from his room in the hospital and talked with the whole coaching and administrative headquarters of the team.Stoichkov assured Dimitar Dimitrov that he is feeling well after the electricity hit he lived through and that he may leave the hospital very soon.
