But I regress (and yes I did mean for that word to be re-gress). What I want to coment on today folks is the current state of mental rape and discrimination of the middle class society member. Let me tell you a story...
Now my sister, god bless her, can, every now and then, be a hoodlem. A few weeks ago she and her friends were caught stealing some fake jewelry from Claire's Boutique in the South Plains Mall in Lubbock, Tx. Now, my sister was paraded through the mall in handcuffs and utterly humiliated. This...is good. She then was told to not come back to the mall for 6 months and was then fined for her actions. This...is also good.
My siser then had to take what ammounts to driver's ed for stealers and was able to erase this transgression from her permanent record. It just disturbs me that the law considers petty theft just as common and understandable as speeding. (but that's a different article)
What I am here to bitch about though is what my parents recieved in the mail yesterday. A letter from Claire's saying that they were suing my parents for $200 in damages. Now, the ring my sister stole was a $6 ring. They got the ring back, and all that they seemed to lose was 15 minutes of the clerks time when he/she had to call the mall police. Unless the clerk makes 800 bucks an hour then Claire's lost nothing. If so, then I need a new job.
What you have to think in all of this is why the company is doing this. I have a theory. My parents HAVE to pay the $200. If they tried to fight it, it would cost them twice as much in court costs, and they don't have the money to justify that. What they do have though...is $200. Claire's knows this through a background check, finding out that my parent's income could support $200. If my family were poor, Clarie's would have let the incident go, with the understanding that they were getting their merchandise back. If my family were rich...they could have fought the $200 charge with a lawyer that they had on retainer for just such an occasion.
Why, may I ask, is the middle class American always getting fucked like this? I'll tell you why, it's because they can afford to. Corporations feel like they have the right to screw over a middle class family because the monkey on their back doesn't scratch as hard. What's $200 to Claire's Boutique? More than likely the coffee spilled on the lap of Mr. CEO who's name isn't even Claire. What's $200 to my family, two weeks worth of groceries. So fuck you Claire's. There...I'm finished.
Well, my friend, your sister should know better than to steal from such a fine corporation.
