DON LAVERNE MATHIS, 65, of Oak Point, TX passed away on
Oct. 6, 2007 at his home with his family around him.
Don was born in Kankakee, IL on April 7, 1942 to LaVerne
and Dorothy Mathis. He graduated from North Central College
in Naperville, IL and worked for Western Electric and AT&T
for 25 years. After retiring from AT&T, Don established a
contract instruction business. Later in life, Don became
a dedicated member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla
59 holding staff positions at the flotilla, division, and
district levels.
He was an Amateur Radio Operator (KB5YAM) and served as the
ARRL North Texas Section Manager from 1999-2001. He also
served as Assistant Section Manager, Technical Coordinator,
Net Manager, Bulletin Manager and an Official Relay Station.
He was known as a tireless worker for the NTS and amateur
radio. He was a life member of the Dallas Amateur Radio Club.
At the time of his death, Don was survived by his wife, Jeanne,
his mother Dorothy, his son, Paul Mathis and wife, Kirsten,
his daughter, Marcella Vaughn and husband, Joe, his brother,
Dale Mathis and wife, Deborah, his sisters, Dianna Horan and
Deborah Coleman, his granddaughters, Tiffany and Marjorie
Fetty, and many other friends and loving family. Don was
preceded in death by his father, LaVerne.
