Ranger Exes Memorial - RHS Class of 1939 RJC

Morris Newnham MORRIS LYMAN NEWNHAM, 91, of Dallas, TX died on Jan. 24, 2014. Born in Ranger, TX on June 19, 1922, he attended Ranger High School in the Class of 1939 but later moved with his parents to Longview where he grad- uated from Longview High School. He graduated from Rice University and soon commissioned in the Navy from the US Naval Academy in WWII. He served as a Naval Officer aboard the U.S.S. Boston in the South Pacific. He married Roberta Newlin of Houston and they moved to Ranger where he operated Ranger Frozen Foods. He served as President of the TX Locker Plant Association. During those years, he served as President of the Board of Regents of Ranger Jr. College, Rotary Club and Ranger Jaycees. He also served on Ranger City Commission before election to mayor from 1961-1968. He was president of the Mayor's and Councilman's Association of the Texas Municipal League. He served on the Board of Directors of First State Bank. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ranger & served as President of the Board of Stewards. Mr. Newnham retired in 2012 from RBC Securities where he was a Senior Vice President. At the time of his death, he was survived by his loving companion for 38 years, Carolyn Lee of Dallas, TX; his wife Roberta Newnham; a son Ray Newnham (RHS-1965); a daughter Nancy Oliver (RHS-1969); 4 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Catherine Newnham McMillan (RHS-1933 WIFE: BILLIE ROBERTA "BERT" NEWLIN NEWNHAM was born Jan. 2, 1925 in Vincennes, IN passed away Dec. 20, 2019; two weeks shy of her 95th birthday, with burial in Evergreen Cememtery at Ranger, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents Lowell & Mabel Newlin, her husband Morris Newnham and her son-in-law Al Oliver. Bert graduated from Rice University. She was Vice President of her class, a member of the O.W.L.S Literary Society and was selected one of the top ten beauties. She went on to receive her teaching certificate from the University of Houston. Bert taught dancing at her studios in Ranger & Becken- ridge and she and Morris owned Ranger Frozen Foods. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Ranger, 47 Club and was an active bridge player. She was a lifelong Democrat who hosted a voting precinct in her home at Lake Leon for over 20 years. Bert really enjoyed traveling with family and friends. Bert will be deeply missed by her son Ray Newnham and daughter Nancy Oliver; grandsons Cash McElroy and wife Joy, Matt Newnham and wife Carri; grand- daughters Shelby Wade and husband Greg, Allison Haertling & husband Peter; 9 great-grandchildren, Caleb, Jackson, Mackenzie, Ryan, Amelia, Beau, Cash, Vivienne and Georgia.
