Kingscote Pioneer Cemetery Transcribed by Julie Stokes 1998 The following are the inscriptions of surviving memorials in the Pioneer Cemetery at Kingscote, Kangaroo Island - this would be the earlies cemetery in South Australia. -------------------------------------- Top left hand corner of cemetery then walking down the slop towards the ford Coffin shaped concrete vault with white marble on top (slab) inscribed with a picture of a shield with ribbon underneath it. The shield has 3 ponies heads on it with one pony head surmounting the shield in a scroll. The writing on it is Bear and Forbear. Inscription reads: In loving memory of our mother Lucy Ann Beare wife of Thomas Hudson Beare who died 3rd September 1837 aged 34 arrived by the barque Duke of York 27th July 1836. on the front of the vault is a bronze plaque - inscription:- In the vault lie the remains of Lucy Anne Beare borb 1803 in England and wife of Thomas Hudson Beare who brought the first family of settlers to South Australia in the first ship, the barque Duke of York which arrived at this island 27th July 1836. Lucy died in childbirth 3rd September 1837 leaving five children under the age of eleven years. She was the first woman settler buried on Kangaroo Island. Memorial donate by Beare descendants was unveiled by Robert Hudson Beare 27th July 1991. --------------------------------------------- Small concrete block with bronze plaque on the face inscribed: PARIS In Memory of Sarah Mary nee Chennell 1849 - 1884 wife of George James telegraph stationmaster Kingscote 1876-1884 mother of Sarah, Ada, George, Charles, Margaret, Amy and Ella died 8th July 1884 interred in this cemetery. Erected byt he descendants of Ella Mary and unveiled by her daughter Wynn Moore 27/7/1991 --------------------------------------------------- Old curve topped slate headstone (dark grey in colour) Inscribed: Sacred to the Memory of Liebling (who died at sea) on the ship Solway 14th October buried 16th October 1837 loved wife of Freidrich W Kleemann ----------------------------------------------------- Broken top portion of a slate headstone inscribed In memory of Annie, daughter of J and R Lynne died 1838 ------------------------------------------------------- rounded piece of concrete half buried in dirt and leaning over inscribed Sacred to the memory of Samuel, infant son of Augustus and Eliza Reeves who died 1856. (Note:- Augustus Reeves is the person after whom Reeves Point was named, and was one of the first to land on Kangaroo Island) -------------------------------------------------------- Concrete slab with bronze plaque inscribed CALNAN In memory of Jeremiah born 1797 County Cork Ireland, arrived Nepean Bay on the Africaine 2/11/1836 husband of Mary Ann (nee Bow) father of John, Charles, Michael and Mary Ann. died Encounter Bay February 1837 burial place unknown and John, son of Jermiah and Mary born 1823 Bemondsy, Greater London, arrived Kangaroo Island 2/11/1836 drowned Backstairs passage while transporting mail in 1853 husband of Eliza Jane (later Reeves) father of Mary Agnes (later Snelling) The Calnan family descendants have continued to reside on Kangaroo Island from 1836 to 1996. Erected by descendants 27/7/1996 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Two headstones, one slate and the other concrete encased in a double gravesite with cast iron frame around it:- slate headstone inscription: Sacred to the memory of John Calnan who departed this life October 30th 1859 aged 2 years and 3 months (monumental mason was R.Cox Adelaide) concrete headstone inscription: Sacred to the memory of Charlotte Ann Calnan who departed this life December 1st 1859 age d5 years and 1 month -------------------------------------------------------------- Broken piece of black basalt inscribed In memory of Ada Emily Daw died November 9th 1862 ----------------------------------------------------------- Coloured concrete slabs Sacred to the memory of George Granger arrived on K.I. 1856 accidentally drowned Bay of Shoals May 9th 1881 aged 4 years Sacred to the memory of Harriet, beloved wife of George Granger died October 27th 1862 aged 40 years. ------------------------------------------------ concrete cross In memory of the infant sone of Lovel and Rebecca Byass who died 1838 --------------------------------------------------- concrete slab inlaid with black marble and bronze plaque inscribed In loving memory of Emma Karoline Milde born 10/9/1838 died 7/4/1839 buried in this cemetery. Remembered by the Milde descendants, July 1989 ------------------------------------------------------- concrete rounded headstone inscribed sacred to the memory of Samuel Giles died 18th February 1839 aged 9 years also Edward H. Giles died 18th July 1839 aged 8 months. this stone was errected by their brothers and sisters 1882. ----------------------------------------------------------- Curved and shouldered concrete headstone inscribed Henry Wallen affectionately known as Governor the first farmer in South Australia. He was resident on Kangaroo Island from 1819 to 1856. Departed this life at Adelaide on May 2nd 1856 and brought to Kangaroo Island for burial. aged 62 years ----------------------------------------------------------------------
