Poisoned Stew Anyone?

Poisoned Stew Anyone

I have heard a lot of folk say the following concerning all types of words that purport to be “prophetic” -

"This has SOME good points"

Or

"Eat the meat and throw out the bones"

Or

"It has a little truth in it"

And every time I hear sayings such as these, the Lord has quickened in me "A little leaven leavens the whole loaf."

Gal. 5:9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

1 Cor. 5:6-8 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

And what is the old leaven?

Mk. 8:15 Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

Leaven in this case is metaphorical. It means any influence spreading through something and working on it to bring about a gradual change; tempering the quality of something. The Pharisees were concerned with keeping the Law of Moses and morals issues of life while the Herodians were concerned with political and economic matters. And woo to us when the two combine to obtain what they desire.

The truth is a person- Jesus Christ... so while the words may be true the little leaven of the pharisitical moral law and or social/political/economic concerns leavens the entire loaf. Though there is truth but not His Spirit = His character- then it should all be thrown out unless like Elisha with the poisoned stew (2 Kings 4:38-41) - it is pointed out and God says to throw some 'flour' (wheat- bread of life) into the stew. If not- don’t eat it- it will eventually kill you.

And Elisha returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine in the land. Now the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.” So one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered from it a lapful of wild gourds, and came and sliced them into the pot of stew, though they did not know what they were. Then they served it to the men to eat. Now it happened, as they were eating the stew, that they cried out and said, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it. So he said, “Then bring some flour.” And he put it into the pot, and said, “Serve it to the people, that they may eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot. 2 Kings 4:38-41

BTW- notice that the gourds which were put into the stew were from a WILD VINE. There is only One True Vine and we are but the branches. Had not the Pharisees and Herodians, even the ones of today, gone out and gathered up some of the ways of the ones who the Lord had driven from the Promised Land because it would contaminate the Word of God and His People? We are what we eat!
