Octodon degus

Size: 6 inches body length with a tail about 6 inches long, weighing between 6 and 11 ounces
Housing: Large aquarium (30+ gallons) or metal wire mesh cage with solid bottom, at least 3 feet long by 2 feet tall by 1 foot deep
Food: In the wild they eat bulbs, tubers and bark. In captivity they can be fed a mix of chinchilla pellets and guinea pig pellets, sweet potatoes, carrots, dandelion greens, timothy hay and fresh green alfalfa. Must not be fed foods containing sugar and limited amounts of food containing starch or fat.
Lifespan: 7 to 10 years
Special Needs/Habits: Active during the day. Needs a dust bath 2 to 3 times a week. An 11-inch exercise wheel with a solid running surface should be provided.
