HOW TO OUTSPACE A MISSLE IN AN F-22
- Conventional fighter detected (F-15). The surface-to-air (SAM) system projects the target track and launches to an interception point.
- Because the interception point is close, the missle retains enough energy to counter its aircraft target's escape maneuvers.
- The stealthy F-22 is not detected until it is much closer. Because the range is greater--and the F-22 flies much faster than other fighters--the missle intercepts later. By that time, the missle must perform a low-energy long tail chase against the aircraft target at the limits of its tracking range.
- With a moderate supersonic jink, the F-22 loses the missle.
