Unicorns represent Chasity and Purity. The Legends say that only the Purest of Virgin Maidens may even get near this great animal. It's said the Unicorn would lay its head in her lap and go to sleep.
Most Unicorns are pictured as pure white in color but can rare ones were varied in color to the deepest black. And some say the horn itself was white at the base, black in the middle and with a sharp, red tip.
Some Legends claim the Unicorns horn ...called "alicorn" had a carbuncle (precious jewel) hidden underneath it. Their horn also had medicinal (especially in curing poison) and magical powers and is why they were hunted by man. The belief in the healing abilities of the horn is probably based on a medieval story. In this particular tale, many animals once gathered around a pool in the midst of night. The water was poisoned and they could not drink from it, until a unicorn appeared. He simply dipped his horn in the pool and the water became fresh and clean again.
