Fairies (Fae) are immortal magic Little People with wings, who live in woody dells. Fairies can only be seen clearly by animals and seldom by humans, although if one is fortunate enough, one might catch a fleeting glimpse. There are a few exceptions however. The first is when fairies use their power (known as 'glamour') to enable a human to see them. During a full moon on Midsummer Eve a mortal may witness fairy dances or celebrations. And by looking through a self-bored stone (a stone in which a hole has been made by tumbling in the waters of a brook; not found on a beach) one can see fairies distinctly. They are also called Sidhe (pronounced 'shee') literally means "people of the (fairy) hills" it is the Gaelic name for the fairies in both Ireland and the Highlands of Scotland. Sometimes they will take human lovers and can have offspring with humans also. Knowing a fairy's true name gives you power over it, so fairies are said to guard their real names very closely. Bells are used as protection against faeries and evil spirits. But faeries also use bells. They are commonly used in faerie rades on the harnesses of their horses. Metal/ iron also repels fairies. Four-leaf clovers can help dispel fairy spells and aid one in seeing invisible fairies. Blackthorn bushes are held sacred by fairies, and fields of bluebells are thought to be heavily enchanted by them. They have numerous wars with insects and reptiles. On September 29 it is said the doors open between our world and the fairy realm for a time. | |
