The first authenic information is that two brothers, James Grant and John Grant came to what is now Chester County from Virginia before the Revolutionary War, court house records show that James Grant sold land on Sandy Creek in 1798 and bought land on Jewel fork of Sandy River.
They had two sons, James Jr. and Benjamin; James Jr. migrated to Georgia and four daughters; Dolly, Phoebe, Sarah and Tabitha who married James R. (Rock) Grant
James and John were members of Capt. Francis Kirkpatrick's company of volunteer horsemen.
The descendants of Benjamin were known as the tribe of Benjamin and the descendants of Rock Grant were known as the House of Rock.
