'Thjoth-verjar-voldugar-manneskjur'. This means 'Germans-mighty-people'.
From this original hending are decended many words and names, including my Altice which has been traced to Heinrich Altig
born about 1680 in Schonau uber Heidelberg. How far back has the name Decker been traced and to where ?Notesfor JAN BROERSEN DECKER:
Jan was from Husum, Denmark (now Schleswig-Holstein,Germany) and Heyletje was from Gotenborg, Bohus, Sweden. He was first called Jan Broersen (son of Broer) before taking the surname Decker in 1679. He was notrelated to Jan Gerretsen Decker. The name Decker means builder in Dutch. At a young age Jan worked for Jacob Huys in the West Indies (on Curacao and in SantaCruz, Cuba). He came to New Amsterdam on the ship "Blue Cock" and settled in Albany, New York. By May 1658 he had moved to Kingston, NY when the settlers there had agreed to form a village. During the same year they asked the governor in New Amsterdam for protection agains the Indians. On 17 Aug 1659 Jan was on a petition asking that Rev. Bloem be appointed minister of Kingston. In 1659 he visited Manhattan and was then sued 44 florins by an innkeeper for nonpayment. On 28 Mar 1660 he was listed as a soldier in Esopus. In 1661 he contributed 15 florins for Rev. Bloem. In Nov 1661 Jan sued the widow of Jacob Huys in Manhattan for nonpayment (by her husband) for work he did in the Caribbean in 1646. Sometime around 1666-68 Jan moved to Marbletown, NY. He had a carpentry shop there. He was in Shawangunk, NY in 1679. On 24 Dec 1679 Jan married second WillemtjeJacobs, sister of his first wife, Heyletje, in Marbletown. Jan was a magistrate (he was nominated for this position on 6 Oct 1673). He took the oath of allegiance to Ulster Co. NY on 1 Sept 1689. He was an Ulster Co. soldier in 1700. In1709 he was assessed L50 by Marbletown. He was not on the 1712 tax rolls. Jan's will was written on 1 Jun 1682. In it he states his survivors would inherit his estate. The place of birth is also given variously as "Schleswig-Holstein, Holland" (erroneous), or "Schleswig-Holste, Denmark". The region of Schleswig-Holstein was at one time under Danish rule. Later it was divided, with Schleswig going to Denmark and Holstein to Germany. Today the region is again united under German rule, excluding a portion of the northern part of Schleswig, whichwas returned to Denmark. At the time of Jan Broersen's birth, the region wouldhave been under Danish rule. The date and place of death have alternately beengiven as being about 1712, in Marbletown, Ulster County, New
York. The family is reported to have begun using the surname of 'Decker' around 1679.
