Notes for JAN GERRETSEN DECKER:
Jan was from Heerden, Gelderland, Netherlands. By 1687 he was using the surname Decker, also spelled Deckker. He had called himself Jan Gerretsen before that. He came to North America prior to 1661 and settled in Kingston, Ulster Co. NY. On 15 Jun 1661 he was on the muster roll of the garrison stationed at Wyltwick (Kingston). Jan moved southwest, down the Old Mine Road (today Route 211), into Rochester Township, NY, Deerpark, NY (near Port Jervis) and finally into New Jersey, settling along the Delaware River. On 2 Sept 1700 he sold Tunis Rosencrans land in Rochester Twp. on Mombaccus Kill for L16. On 25 Aug 1701 he gave son Harmonus 92 acres of upland near Gysbert Van Garden. On 19 Feb 1701-2 he sold Tunis Osterhaus land between Fountaine and Mombaccus Kills for L7. Jan was granted land by the Town of Rochester, north of Roundout Kill, on 22 Sep 1703. On 15 1704-5 he gave it to son Gerret Jans. On 5 Apr 1706 he deeded land in Rochester Twp. to his five sons, lots #1-#5 north of Roundout Kill. He was described in the deeds as being of "great age". He died in Port Jervis, Orange Co. NY in 1717.Notes for GRIETJEN HENDRICKS WESTECAMP:
Grietjen's marriage record states that she was "neither a virgin or a widow". She had a child, Peter, baptized in 1662. The father was Peter Jacobsen, a miller, who died in 1664. Grietjen was captured by Indians during a raid on Kingston in 1663.

23 March JAN GERRETSEN, j. m., of Heerden, and GRIETJENHENDRICKS WESTERCAMP, of [New] Amsterdam in Nieunederlant [New Netherland], both resid. here [in Wiltwyck, now Kingston]. "Est nec virgo nec vidua." (rough translation: "She is neither virgin nor widowed.") First publication of Banns, 9March; second, 16 March; third, 23 March. I also show Pieter Jacobsen as her first husband, but can't recall the source - will have to do some digging. I know there's a story behind this, something like him abandoning her or him being already married to someone else? Can't quite get my brain wrapped around it right at the moment.
In a reply sent to me privately, I've received info that Greitjen sued Pieter Jacobsen 4 Oct 1662 stating that he had ruined her and asked "to have her honor restored". Pieter denied the child was his but she named himas the father to the seven women who were present when the child was born. Pieter in turn sued her asking for a "release". He was granted the "freedom to marry whom he pleases" on 6 Feb 1663 but ordered to pay her 200 guilders for her "services in having "lain" with him". The baptismal entry in Kingston (the book in the library) indicates the child was illegitimate. I'm hoping I can find thesource of the info on the law suits.
