Discounts at Texas and National Parks & Recreation Areas (4/99)

We've been blessed with wonderful weather this Spring, so let's take advantage of it. Whether you're looking for Bluebonnets, beaches, exotic birds, or just want to commune with nature, I've got a deal for you.

The Texas State Parklands Passport, also known as the Bluebonnet Passport, allows many Texans to enter Texas state parks for free. This windshield decal is free for Texas residents who reached age 65 before September 1, 1995, and veterans with a 60 percent or greater disability rating. Disabled individuals who receive Social Security benefits as a result of a mental or physical impairment (including blindness) are entitled to a 50% discount on entry fees to State parks and recreation areas.

Texas residents turning 65 on or after September 1, 1995 are eligible for senior discounts and there are also weekly, monthly, and seasonal discounts. Contact the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department at 800-792-1112 (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us) and request information about other passports, discounts on hunting and fishing licenses, brochures, reserving preferred campsites, special events, and brochures about Texas state forests, state parks, historical parks, and natural areas.

If you're off to national parks or forests in Texas or elsewhere and you're at least 62 years young, consider purchasing a Golden Age Passport for ten dollars. You'll receive a lifetime entrance pass to all national parks and forests, monuments, historic sites, recreation areas and national wildlife refuges that normally charge an entrance fee. It's available at any federal park area that charges an entrance fee. All passengers in the same private vehicle are admitted free, and if you're on foot, in most cases the passport admits the pass holder, spouse and children. It also grants a 50% discount on fees charged for facilities and services such as camping, swimming, parking and boat launching.
