Did you know that many sales clerks are actually instructed to NOT
offer senior discounts? In these politically correct times, business
owners are so fearful of offending customers, they won't offer a senior
discount unless someone asks for it. In a survey I did of active Texas
seniors, the fact that discounts weren't offered was the primary reason
given for not using senior discounts more often. Empower yourself by
politely asking about senior discounts, especially when you're buying
airline tickets.
Almost every national and regional Texas airline offers some type of
senior discount. The two main services are coupon books good for a year
or discounts on individual fares. Whether you're working with a travel
agent or calling the airlines, be sure to ask for all available discounts. Mention you're a senior and be sure to request your frequent flier miles. By calling 1-800-SKYMILES and requesting a Delta American Express card, you'll receive 5,000 miles and one mile for every dollar charged (one and one-half miles for Delta airline tickets). The annual charge is $55.
Airline senior discounts begin at age 62-65 and will save from 10% to several hundred dollars
depending upon your destination. An additional advantage of using a senior
discount is that most airlines will extend the discount to one or more
traveling companions regardless of their ages. Ask about "compassion
fares" or "bereavement fares" if you're traveling to a funeral or visiting
someone whose death is imminent. Often these fares are half the normal
fare and many travel restrictions are waived.
