COLUMNS >>> WORKIN' THE MIC

by Ken Browning

Updated 5/7/05

First, Let me welcome you to what is set to be a great website. We have put alot of time into this website to help promote independent wrestling. Our goal is simply to get more people involved in the indys' becuase they are the future of this business.

Let me also welcome you to the first edition of my peronsonal column "Workin' The Mic". I will be updating the column once a month with my views on Indy wrestling, Shows we've attended, and wrestling in general. I hope you enjoy what I have to say, as much as I enjoy writing it.

I want to get into thing's and go back a week. I was live in attendance for the Eastern Wrestling Alliances event held in Essex, MD. Im not sure what the exact attendance was, but it was impressive. I would estimate it was roughly around 200 paid. For an Indy, that is very good, and considering it is only the second time they have ran their show in the Bowleys Quarters Fire Hall, its extremely well. The highlights of the evening saw the CZW Heavyweight Champion, Ruckus defeat the EWA Cruiserweight Champion, Derek Frazier, for the title. The match was a 30 minute Iron man match that I believe resulted in a 3-2 finish. Im more of a technical wrestling/old school guy, but I do enjoy my highspot wrestling from time to time. I always enjoy seeing these 2 work. Being Maryland boys plays alot into that. I like seeing guys like Ruck and Frazier and expecially Orlando Jordon and Joey Mercury (will always still be Joey Matthews to me) make it in the business. But back to Ruck and Frazier, The match was what any highspot mark would love. There was definately alot in-between that 30 minute period to keep your heart pumping and feet hurting from all the standing. Easily the best match of the night.

Also on the card that night was former MCW Heavyweight champion and CZW star, Adam Flash wrestling Stevie Riggs for the EWA Heavyweight Title. They put on a better match then I had anticipated. I was expecting a decent match, but it was a little better then I thought it would be. I was impressed with the work of both men. Riggs isnt a big guy, but can work decent and given an opponent like Adam Flash, It makes both men look good.

Moving Along... Tonight Joe and I are planning on attending Ground Breaking Wrestlings "Breaking Point" event in Hanover, PA. Ruckus and Derek Frazier are on the card as well as EWA Tag Team Champions, The Prep Club. We will be filming some footage for our Wrestling Hilite TV Show and taking a live report of the event to post here on the website.

Every month im going to try an HiLite (no pun intended) an Indy show of the month. Basically, If you can hit 1 show per month, im going to tell you which one you should hit. On the 14th of this month, CZW is holding their annual "Best of the Best 5". It is a 1 night-16 man tournament to crown the "Best of the Best" champion. Past winners include TNA star Sonjay Dutt, Bboy, Trent Acid and W*nger. It is a truely great event where CZW spins away from their "Ultra Violent" ways to present pro wrestling as a whole. It is your mix between your lucha and mat wrestling. As of right now, I will be in attendence for the show, which also feature Derek Frazier in the tournament. Im assuming that Ruckus will be defending his CZW Heavyweight Title as well, but it is not official at this time.

Though I just plugged CZW's event, Be sure to stick local as well for you wrestling feind's and check out the National Wrestling League tomorrow night or on 5/14 (same night as CZW. Its your call). EWA returns to Bowleys Quarters on 5/28 with what is shaping up to be a decent event. Alot of storylines have began at the last event and from that, I am expecting the following matches:
-EWA Tag Titles: The PPF vs Money Power Respect vs Xtreme Pandemonium vs The Prep Club(champions)
-EWA Cruiserweight Title: Ruckus (champion) vs Adam Flash or Jimmy Starz
-EWA Heavyweight Title: Stevie Riggs (champion) vs Derek Frazier

That is just my guess, so I could be wrong. Don't bank on what I say. Check the front page in the Upcoming Events section for updates regarding the 5/28 EWA event.

In a sad note, this month in wrestling (as it can be found in our Monthly Extra section) marks the death of many legends including Vince McMahon Sr., The British Bulldog and Owen Hart.

Vince was always said to be a stand up man who kept to his work. More so, repelling magnet of his son, Vince Jr. The Brittish Bulldog was always a favorite and a case of someone taken too soon. The Bulldog had a history of problems with pills and steroids, and I think its just a matter of his lifestyle finally catching up to him. It's truely sad to see. Then there is Owen Hart. The wrestling world's favorite wrestling child. Just today I was thinking of where Owen would be. If he were in the WWE today, could you imagine the matches we would be seeing? He would without a doubt be in World Title hunts. We could of had matches with Guerrero, Angle, Jericho, Beniot, Benjamin to name a few. Sadly, his life ended tragically due to someones imcompitance and mis-judgement. He lost his life in the business he loves, unfortunately it was for a gimmicked enterance that no one really cared for anyhow.

Another man who lost his life at a young age, and passed away recent is Chris Candido. I have always been a fan for Candidos, Stemming from his work in Smokey Mountain and ECW. I wasn't into his stint with the WWF as Skip of the Body Donnas, just becuase I was smart to wrestling then and hated all the gimmicks. Candido was a crisp worker who has travelled the world. He has crossed paths here in Maryland a few times and I was lucky enough to meet him on a couple occasions. He is a genuine nice person and went out his way to converse with me. Something I will always remember and be grateful for. Chris Candido is a stand up man and a class act and he deserves to truely rest in peace. RIP Chris, Your in everyones thoughts and prayers.

I think that just about does it for my first column. Its now 6:51 AM EST and I have to get some sleep! Once again, Id like to thank those of you who are taking time out of their lives to read what I have to say. Id love to hear any feedback you may have. You can email me at KBrowning@publicist.com or visit our Message Board. Until next time, C-YA!
