Victoria didn’t waiver. “You’re going to have to face it sometime, Kate. There are many thoughtless, ignorant people in the world. How you came into it will be called into question sooner or later.”

She touched Kate’s cheek. “Your brother Heath deals with the same thing every day of his life. The Barkley name didn’t guarantee him acceptance, and neither will yours. But I wouldn’t have missed having him in my life—or you.

“Heath’s a gentle man, but he has a core of steel—and that’s what you’ll need, too. And he has a sense of humor—perhaps that’s his saving grace! He still calls me ma’am occasionally just to hear me remind him that all my children call me Mother.

“Where Nick is often impulsive, Heath thinks things through before making a decision. He’ll risk everything for a good cause, but he makes sure of it first. That’s a good example to follow, Kate, and I hope you will. Life isn’t always safe—but it will be as good as you make it.”

She examined her wedding ring thoughtfully.

“Heath didn’t say, in so many words, that I was doing the right thing when I decided to marry your father—or when we decided to adopt you. He just smiled. A smile can take you farther in life than words, Kate—remember that. It can speak volumes—and Heath’s smile always does.

“You remind me of Heath—accepting everything that comes your way without complaint. I felt we owed him so much when he first came, but he didn’t want anything—except to be loved. What a joy he’s been!”

From her willow basket, Kate met her mother’s eyes as if seeing her for the first time.

“And what a joy you are, darling girl!”
