The Austrailian Land

Australia is both an island country (the Commonwealth of Australia) and a continent. It is about the size of the 48 contiguous states in the U.S. Lacking any significant mountains, the elevation averages 1,000 feet making Australia one of the flattest landmasses on earth.
The major population centers of Melbourne and Sydney are along the southeast coast. The total population of Australia is about 18,000,000 (about 1/15 the population of the U.S.) Much of Australia is a desolate flat desert referred to as the outback or bush.
Although Australia is the driest continent on earth, the continent is quite varied containing arid desert and tropical rain forests. Near the center of Australia is found Ayers Rock (Uluru) is a monumental rock rising 1142 feet above the surrounding desert and measuring 6 miles in circumference. Although many visitors visit and climb Ayers Rock, the local Aborigines consider the rock sacred and would prefer that visitors not climb the rock.
The Survivor 2 program will be filmed 1 hour inland from Cairns, a major tourist center for the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest.
