The Mole - Episode 3

The Mole - Episode 3

Liz, by far the team's oldest player, leaves behind a bunch of young'ns in the round of 10...

The confessionals at the beginning of this episode refer to an incident that took place after the execution last episode. Nicole said to Paul, "I'ma kill you while you sleep," and further claimed that she knew how to do it without leaving evidence, after he verbally ran her down. My style of episode reports being such as they are, it's difficult to include something like that where it happens, but it's important to know about as you read on.

Paul: "Look at Nicole. She's threatening my life? Are you kidding me? Are you really kidding me, Nicole, you're gonna threaten my life?

"She might say that I need anger management, well she needs mouth management, 'cuz all she does is run her friggin' mouth."

Nicole: "He's going down, because men like that who are overly egotistical and judgmental really get under my skin.

"And that's too bad. Because I am here to stay."

We zoom in from space on Santiago once again.

Paul is talking to Craig and Ali in the hotel lobby about Nicole's threat from the previous night. Ali says she was very surprised Nicole would say something like that.

Paul: "Everybody was a little concerned about what Nicole said. It made me feel that maybe I could play into their fears a little bit more.

"I'm gonna use any advantage I can to throw other people off their game."

He tells Ali he was too afraid to sleep the previous night.

Ali: "Nicole bothers me. I believe she did work hard to get into medical school, that's great, but I think she's nuts. I really do."

While Paul and Nicole have been at each others' throats and the throats of others, some of the players have been reaching out to one another. It's revealed that Clay, Mark, and Bobby have had a partnership going the entire game. They're shown upstairs in the hotel talking together.

Mark: "Clay and I have a coalition with Bobby. It's the three of us. And so we made an agreement that we will share information to figure out who the Mole is."

Bobby says Ali is one of his suspects, that she's hard to figure out and he can't tell if she's being genuine or not.

Bobby: "I trust Mark and Clay. I feel like we have each others' backs, regardless."

Ali talks to Nicole in another room about the death threat, and Nicole claims she just did it to rile him up, which it seems worked.

Nicole: "It's a game. We're playing a game. So, let me say the worst thing I can possibly think of to somebody. I don't feel anything about Paul at all. This is a game. I'm focused."

Is it just me, or are these two playing exactly the same game? I get the feeling when they're able to step back from this a little they just might be able to come to respect one another.

The players meet Jon as he stands in front of a long table covered with fresh fruit. He takes a big bite of a green apple and pretends to be surprised to the see the players, apologizing and awkwardly swallowing the apple. He mentions the death threat from the previous night and says the group is having some pretty major trust issues. Today's mission is all about trust. He tells them to split into two groups of five, five that can't trust anyone, and five that trust blindly.

The "can't trust" players are Paul, Alex, Kristen, Victoria, and Clay, and the "trust blindly" players are Craig, Ali, Nicole, Mark, and Bobby.

This mission is called "Fruit of the Luge." Behind them is a steel luge course. Jon unveils the vehicle for this sorry bunch of lugers, and mentions that they can potentially go as fast as 45 miles per hour on the course. He tells the player to pair up, one from each group. The "can't trust" players will be up front, operating the handbrake, but blindfolded. The "trust blindly" players will be behind them, giving directions so they'll make it through the course safely. This, however, is the easy part. Along the course there are seven pictures of native Chilean fruit. The player who can see the pictures will have to call them out to the blindfolded player as they pass them, and the blindfolded player must then come back to the long table and lay the fruits out in the correct order. Each fruit correctly placed is worth $2,000 for the pot.

Jon stresses that there must be no communication between the two players after they cross the finish line of the luge course.

The first to go are Clay and Bobby. Jon reiterates that they are not to talk after they cross the finish line. Clay is blindfolded, and off they go.

Bobby: "The luge ride was scary. I was worried about killing myself on it."

They pass the first fruit picture. It's a green apple, just as Jon was munching on at the beginning of the challenge. Next are grapes, then bananas, a red tomato, green bananas, a green kiwi, and a pear.

They cross the finish line and Bobby repeats "Pear." Clay asks what color the pear is.

Clay must now place the fruits in the correct order. He pulls the green apple first, then grapes, then tomatoes, then yellow bananas, and goes on. There doesn't seem to be a pear on the table.

Clay: "This man Bobby just told me pear. The only thing remotely close to it was an avocado. Immediately, I just begin to think, what's up with Bobby?"

Clay rings a bell to signify that his guess is complete. He has a green apple, purple grapes, red tomatoes, yellow bananas, green bananas, kiwis, and then the avocado. These are the correct fruits, but the tomatoes and the yellow bananas were inverted chronologically, so only five of the seven are correct. Clay and Bobby seem happy anyway.

Next to luge are Ali and Paul. She calls the fruits out to him.

Paul: "I'm thinking that we could fly off this luge at any time. It was terrifying."

They cross the finish line and Paul sets to picking out the fruits. He also has the seven correct fruits with two out of order, meaning five of seven correct. These two also seem satisfied with that result.

Next on the luge track are Craig and Victoria.

Victoria: "I think in any other situation, I would have been scared, but I was engulfed by Craig. It was like body armor (chuckles)"

He calls the fruits out for her as they pass them. They repeat the order of the fruits together and continue doing so after crossing the finish line of the luge course. Paul notices that they were talking after crossing the finish line, and mentions it to Ali.

Even long after their luge has stopped moving, Craig and Victoria are still repeating the order.

Paul: "It was a little fishy when Craig and Victoria kept rambling on and - I mean, I wanted to pick an apple up and hit 'em in the head with it just to tell them to stop talking!"

Victoria goes back to the table and correctly places all seven fruits. Craig and Victoria cheer and hug, and he takes her off the ground.

Craig: "It's such an incredible feeling of accomplishment, to actually feel like I contributed to the group."

The next duo to luge are Mark and Kristen. Mark calls the fruits out for her.

This is the fourth different challenge, out of only five so far, where Mark and Kristen could wind up matched together for a quiz answer.

She also places all seven fruits correctly on the table.

The last duo is Nicole and Alex. When Craig mentions that Alex will be the one blindfolded, Paul, Victoria, Bobby, Clay and Ali seem a bit less than sanguine of that pair's possibilities.

Paul: "I think Nicole is just sabotaging this whole game for everyone."

Down they come. Nicole calls out "green apple" twice, leading Alex to believe there were two of them in a row. When he goes up to the table to make his guess, he puts down two apples, causing everything after the first apple to be rendered incorrect.

Bobby: "Everyone, I think, as a consensus knew that it was pretty much impossible to get one out of seven fruits correct."

Ali: "Ugh. You get two green apples, that's just ridiculous."

The other eight players want to know how Alex managed to put down two green apples, and he basically blames Nicole. Paul has no trouble accepting that explanation.

Of the thirty-five possible fruits, twenty-five were placed correctly, meaning $50,000.........would have been won if two of the groups hadn't broken the rules. Because Bobby and Clay, and Victoria and Craig, kept talking after they crossed the finish line, the winnings in this game for those two groups are reduced to zero.

Craig: "I feel horrible. I went straight from being a hero to being a loser."

Bobby: "I really didn't know we broke the rules. I was so excited and pumped when we got the five out of seven that I thought there was no way, no way, that we were being disqualified."

FRUIT OF THE LUGE - +$26,000

TOTAL - $89,000

Mark: "The wind came out of my sails a little bit. Victoria kept the talking going, which is suspicious to me."

Clay: "I was very perplexed, because of the many mistakes that Bobby made. It called into question my ability to trust him. Heck, I could be in a coalition with the Mole right now."

Back at the hotel, Mark tells Clay they need to be very careful with information they get from Bobby in the future. It seems they're cutting him out of their coalition based on the events of the last challenge.

Clay: "Bobby does not know that I am wavering in my trust of him. I'd rather sit back, watch him, observe him."

Mark: "I've been suspicious of Bobby for a little while now, and I've been keeping an eye on him."

Mark explicitly states that he'd prefer to just work with Clay for the foreseeable future. He says if Bobby comes to them with something, the two of them can work it up together, but otherwise he's not part of Mark's plans.

Mark: "The only person I trust right now is Clay."

Clay: "The person I trust the most in this game is myself."

Bingo. Bullseye.

Jon has told the players to get dressed in their Sunday best, to go to a local spa. Victoria guesses in the van that the purpose of whatever's to come is to butter them up and then unexpectedly hit them with the next mission.

Paul: "The spa that he put is in was awesome. It had a beautiful pool. It had a Jacuzzi, saunas. It was looking like it was gonna be a pretty good day."

Alex: "The girls looked great. That's, like, an added bonus, especially for me as a single guy it was nice eye candy."

Craig: "Who ever heard of a spa with a water slide? It was amazing. I loved it."

He barrels down the slide a couple of times.

Some of the players gather in a hot tub and start talking about Fruit of the Luge, specifically the problems Alex and Nicole had.

Kristen: "What happened in the last mission just doesn't make sense to me. There was definitely something weird going on.

"Nicole wants people to think she's the Mole. You know, she's a liar, and you just don't know who she is. I believe the way that Alex is playing the game is very, sort of smart and savvy. I detected some sabotage by him in the last mission."

Nicole does admit to saying "green apple" twice, but says it was just for her own memory and implies that Alex should have known the difference.

The players then head upstairs to begin their "pampering." Paul and Ali both take in a hot rocks massage, Victoria gets rubbed down in chocolate, Bobby gets a grape massage, and the others all get a Swedish massage.

Alex: "You go into a massage wanting to release and forget everything that's on your mind, but you're waiting for the catch. There's never an opportunity to relax in this game. You have to stay on your toes. Even while they're rubbing them."

In the sauna, Bobby calls Mark out for looking at him differently than before, and seems to suggest that Mark isn't holding up his end of the bargain for their coalition.

Mark: "I wouldn't say that the relationship with Bobby is dead, but it's definitely on life support."

Bobby says he's very strongly suspecting Paul. Remembering Jon eating the apple before Fruit of the Luge, Bobby equates that to Paul's home of New York, the "Big Apple."

Would they use the EXACT SAME CLUE twice?

Mark: "Bobby has flown to another planet."

We see Jon filing his fingernails as he sneaks into the locker rooms and makes off with each player's clothes, leaving them with only shoes and underwear.

Paul: "Here's the catch - Jon got us once again."

The players meet Jon as he stands behind a reception desk. He has good news and bad news.

Victoria: "Wait - what? What?"

Bobby: "All good things must come to an end, but I mean, it came to a crashing, bitter fiery end."

Ali: "This is, this is where the next mission begins, right here."

Craig: "Of course they took all of our clothes! This whole thing was just a setup. Of course we got screwed!"

Jon tells the players to split into two groups of three and two groups of two. The groups are Craig, Bobby, and Nicole as a group of three, Paul and Alex as a group of two, Victoria, Kristen, and Ali as a group of three, and Clay and Mark as a group of two.

Jon has sent the players' clothes to the cleaners to get cleaned and pressed. They're not going to be ready anytime soon, though. He has reservations at a fancy restaurant for 6:30, but only those players who meet the restaurant's dress code will get in. That's the bad news. The good news is they can add a lot of money to the pot; for every player that meets him in the restaurant, $5,000 will be added to the pot. He has the restaurant's address on a business card, and gives a card to each group.

The players will have roam the streets, in their underwear, begging the good people of Santiago for the clothes off their backs. The spa's terry robes, with the players suddenly seem to be holding onto like grim death, can't leave the building. Mark immediately takes his off at hearing this.

Jon says the ladies need a two-piece top and either a skirt or pants and the gentlemen need a button-up shirt, tie, and slacks to get into the restaurant. They have two and a half hours to get dressed, as it were.

Craig's first observation is a very astute one - he doesn't think there's anyone in Santiago that's his size.

Paul: "Immediately, I am like, there's no way I can do this. This is never, ever gonna work."

Victoria: "None of the girls had anything! We were, under those robes, in our birthday suits! So we were freaking out."

But Jon has the players covered in the event that they don't have any underwear (does this mean they don't have any underwear AT ALL? I thought he left them with underwear when taking their clothes in the first place). He unveils a black brief for the guys, with a Mole thumbprint on the back, and a skimpy little top and bottom for the ladies to cover themselves.

Additionally, if a player doesn't make in to the restaurant, they don't get to eat that night.

Kristen: "We're all kinda looking around like, uh, are you serious?"

Craig: "When the girls come out in their Mole costumes, I thought they were doing a video for a rock band. This isn't fair, they're hot!"

Before the mission can even begin, Clay chooses not to participate. He says dignity and self-respect are way more important than money. Mark opts out immediately after Clay does.

Alex: "I was kind of questioning Mark. He immediately dropped his robe, so it was really interesting how Mark said he would do it in the beginning, but then he backed out."

Paul: "The mission hasn't even started yet, and already we're down $10,000."

Bobby: "The most embarrassing part of the mission was definitely me, Craig, and Nicole going through town in our underwear.

"So I'm like a lanky string bean walking around town. Then you have Craig hanging out, like floppin' around, and then there's Nicole, who's just like a super diva. Like, we just looked so awkward together."

Craig: "Bobby and I looked like a walking impersonation of the number 10."

Bobby asks someone for a shirt and tie in Spanish. A guy stands up and appears to begin to take his shirt off, but doesn't.

Bobby: "Everyone looked at you like you had five heads. There was no chance in hell they were gonna give you their clothes!

"So awkward!"

Bobby keeps trying, and keeps getting strange looks as his response in most instances. One woman tells Bobby he needs food.

Craig: "One of the first ladies we walked up to, she said to Bobby, 'You don't need clothes. You need food.'"

As you might expect, Victoria, Kristen, and Ali aren't having any trouble getting attention, but it's not really the sort of attention they need.

Victoria: "Kristen and I were wearing boots. I call 'em 'hooker boots.'"

Kristen: "We looked like Charlie's Angels."

They get wolf whistles as they walk down a sidewalk.

Ali: "We immediately got attention...from everybody. There was construction workers hollering, everyone was staring at us. There was just, honks, and just, shouts, and just, marriage proposals. What the heck am I doing?!"

There is a bus beside them on the sidewalk.

Kristen: "All of a sudden, we run into this bus full of Catholic schoolboys. And they are freaking out."

They definitely look happy. One is shown taking pictures. Ali tries to ask for clothes.

Kristen: "And then another busload of kids comes. Total chaos."

Victoria suggests the boys could give up some of their shirts, but Ali and Kristen seem to want more simply to get out of there, as they walk away.

Victoria: "There's nothing but dudes everywhere. And they literally followed us for two blocks. Fifty boys following us for two blocks. I'm sure those little boys will remember us for the rest of their life.(chuckles)"

One of the boys lets out a calm sigh of satisfaction.

Elsewhere, Alex is again putting his good Spanish skills to use. He and Paul have found a couple of cab drivers that they hope will be agreeable.

Paul: "I thought, it's gonna be impossible to get people to give us their clothes. But then I also knew that Alex speaks great Spanish. So we run into a few cab drivers, and he's just (gibberish). They willingly took the shirts right off of their backs and gave it to us. It surprised me, the generosity of the people of Chile. It was amazing that they were giving us this stuff."

Alex thanks the cabbies, and they are off once more.

Alex: "Getting those shirts on our bodies was a big uplifting moment. Paul and I smelled like some cab drivers right off the bat, I'll tell you that."

Nicole and the number 10 are still looking for ropa.

Bobby: "I just wanted to get one piece of clothing on as fast as I could."

They finally find a man who has a shirt he is willing to give them. It won't fit Craig, so Bobby throws it on. Nicole displays a little Spanish herself moments later.

Bobby: "Nicole shortly after that got a blouse."

Nicole: "We see a store. And the lady, she picked out the skirt and helped me match!"

Bobby: "And then, across the street, the one guy gave us his apron for Nicole, so Nicole was all set."

She kisses the man who gave her the apron.

Nicole: "I am over the moon that I am no longer naked. Naked is good in certain situations, but not in public on the streets of a foreign country!"

The group of three ladies still hasn't found anything for themselves.

Victoria: "I knew this would be a hard mission. Although it was a little more difficult than I anticipated."

Ali: "We just went up to random people on the streets, and they all kind of laughed at us."

Maybe they just didn't want to clothe these three ;\

Victoria encounters some people who speak English, and can finally ask for help without a language barrier.

Ali: "We got one sweater from a girl that spoke English. And then there was a point of like 45 minutes where we didn't find anything."

Ali tells Kristen she doesn't think this is possible. She says her feet are really hurting and she doesn't care about the mission.

Ali: "I, honestly, I wanted to quit."

She asks the other two if they're really committed to the mission and want to keep trying or if they would rather quit. They both want to keep trying.

Back with the two gentlemen, Alex and his language skills get Paul a tie and pants to complete his outfit. Paul then incredibly encounters a fellow New Yorker, in Chile, who is able to hook them up with a pair of pants for Alex.

Paul: "So at one point I just started screaming, does anybody speak English, and sure enough. He says, 'New York?' I said, 'New York!'

"Man, this is like, some divine intervention, this is, like, crazy, I said what are the chances of being in Chile and I meet a New Yorker and he's willing to go to this youth hostel and get us some pants?"

The other New Yorker tells Paul to do their home state proud.

Alex: "Went a little further down the street, saw a guy with a nice tie on."

The gentleman is willing to part with his tie. The two of them then find the restaurant and Jon sees them coming, from a perch on a balcony overlooking the street. They still have to pass the dress code, per the restaurant's maitre d'.

He allows them in. $10,000 is won, and Paul and Alex don't have to go hungry.

Kristen reaffirms to Ali that they're not going to give up. They only have 32 minutes left.

Victoria: "Ali, she wanted to give up. I told Kristen, I don't want to give up, she was like, me either. So that was a little questionable. I think that's her trying to sabotage.

"Americans! They literally gave us the shirts off their backs."

They find some American men, and through a little convincing, they're able to pry the shirts off their backs.

Kristen: "So we had three shirts now, and Victoria got a cardigan, then I got a sweater, so now the three of us had button-up shirts and sweaters."

All that remains now is pants or skirts.

Victoria: "I came to this woman on her smoke break, and telling her we need black pants. So she was like, I got three, I got three! And so, at that point, all our outfits were complete."

They're fully clothed and head to the restaurant. The maitre d' lets them in, adding another $15,000 to the pot.

Craig is still shirtless and pants-less. Bobby suggests they look for a laundromat, where people might have spare clothes handy.

They encounter some locals who take them to a theater company, complete with an extensive costume collection. Bobby gets pants, but nothing is big enough for Craig. The locals take them to other places, and complete Bobby's outfit with a tie and finally find a shirt large enough for Craig.

Bobby: "Craig spots a laundromat."

He stumbles in some pretty broken Spanish to ask if there's spare clothing inside. Then a breakthrough is made.

Craig: "I noticed Alex's name on an envelope sitting on the counter. I said, 'Are those our clothes? Can I have my clothes?' And those were our clothes."

Cleaned and pressed, these indeed are the players' original clothes, all ten players' outfits from that morning before going to the spa.

Bobby: "It was my idea in the beginning to look for the laundromat, because I thought they would have extra clothes just lying around for us to take. When I planted that seed in Craig's head, he saw the laundromat, and luckily, it was where our clothes had been cleaned and pressed. We had all the team's clothes, all the original suits and dresses and skirts that everyone had. It was one of the highest highs we've had, because people have thought that Craig and I have been so useless. So we're like thank God we're the heroes for once."

They reach the restaurant, with mere minutes to spare, and are of course let inside.

Craig: "Arriving at the restaurant fully clothed and carrying everybody's clothes, it was amazing, I felt like a hero."

The players at the table are thrilled to get their clothes back.

Victoria: "I was happy that Bobby brought my clothes back. I love Bobby, he's so adorable. He wants to contribute to the group, and so I think he finally felt, 'Okay, I've done something, I've contributed."

A little while later, Mark and Clay, clad in spa robes, come by, but they aren't allowed in.

DRESS CODE - +$40,000

TOTAL - $129,000

Jon reveals a hidden way that the players could have more easily succeeded in the mission. In the bottom left corner of the cards containing the address to the restaurant is what looks like a copyright, but it's actually the address to the dry cleaner's that Craig, Bobby, and Nicole stumbled upon.

The next night, at the execution dinner, the shit sorta hits the fan.

Jon congratulates the players for adding a lot of money to the pot in this round, and asks who the group thinks among them is really, truly committed to winning. The obvious answer is Mark, who has been taking insanely detailed notes in his journal. Craig points out that even right now he is taking notes. Mark tries to shrug this off, but says he's just hyper-competitive - play to win, or don't play.

Mark: "I'm here to do well for my family. That's why it seems like I'm obsessing over this journal."

He seems a little upset that Paul referred to his detail in note-taking as "obsessive," and Paul of course does not react well to this at all, further talking down to Mark. Paul thinks the others are demonstrating that they'd rather have friends than money, and he's glad of that. Mark says he'd rather be a decent person than have money, and Paul really acts offended by that.

Bobby says Paul should play the game more respectfully. Paul calls him a punk, which Craig reacts to facially, resulting in Paul calling him out. Craig just says Paul needs to be careful about the words he chooses to use. Paul reiterates that he's not here to be anybody's friend. Nicole tries to interject herself to the conversation and Paul talks all over her, saying she should be the last one with anything to say. She apologizes to the table, presumably for the death threat and being less than pleasant herself in round one. Paul wants her to apologize directly to him, and she says he's part of the table, but then in fact does directly apologize to him. At that point, he says he doesn't want her apology.

Nicole: "Paul tried to bait me...you gotta kill him with kindness. Can't kill him for real!"

Alex and Victoria seem to be enjoying the show, concealing grins behind wine glasses.

Jon asks if the players are surprised that the tone of the dinner has gone this way. Mark says it's unfortunately not surprising, and that it happens much too often.

Paul: "It's a lot of people directing some anger towards me. Basically, I decided to drive their anger a little bit more. I'm going to use any advantage I can to throw other people off their games. Knowing that a quiz was coming right after this dinner, I figured, you know, if I keep this up and fire them up, it could potentially ruin their quizzes."

The players meet Jon in Santiago's old central train station, designed by the same man who designed Paris' Eiffel Tower.

Jon mentions that there are no exemptions this round, and unveils a bribe. He offers $20,000 to the players if anyone will voluntarily leave the game. No one takes the offer, so he begins the execution.

After checking three names, with all of them getting green screens, he ups the ante to $30,000, and says that even players who now know that they're safe may take the money and run.

Ali stands and raises her hand. She's taking the money. She says she thinks she messed up on the quiz, and doesn't think she's safe. She misses her home and family, and thinks they'll be happy with this decision. She gets a send-off befitting of an execution. Alex says what she did was the smartest thing anyone's done in the game. Bobby says that he's here to play the game, and even if only he and one other person didn't yet know they were safe, he would never take the bribe.

Jon returns after seeing her off to the car, to continue the execution.

He's not kidding.

Click the pictures below. If a green screen appears, that player remains in the game. If a red screen appears, that player is the Mole's latest victim and must leave with Ali, who would have been safe if she had chosen to stay.
