Family: Charles’ parents and sister Honoria live in Boston. He had a younger brother, Timmy, who died in childhood.
Major Winchester joined the 4077th after Major Frank Burns was sent Stateside in the aftermath of Margaret Houlihan's marriage. He was assigned to the 4077th by his immediate superior in Tokyo, where Charles’ father had got him a cushy desk job, and for a long time Charles did everything he could to try and get himself reassigned to Tokyo. He comes from a very rich family in Boston, as he never tires of informing those whom he views as “lessers”. He applied this term especially to his bunkmates Hawkeye and BJ, as well as the majority of the enlisted men. A specialist in Thoracic Surgery, Charles believed he was a superior surgeon and superior human being to BJ and Hawkeye, but during his stay a series of events, including a near-death experience, caused Charles to value those around him more, although he rarely allowed this to show. By the time the end of the war was drawing near, Charles was prepared to sacrifice the chance of returning to his cushy post in Tokyo to save the reputation of Margaret Houlihan, showing the more honourable side of his personality.
