Once ingested, the magical properties of the mushrooms start to work. They tap into your subconscious and you start to dream about some pressing issue that has been affecting you, or your future. In the end, you start to dream of choking, or the lights going out as the ivy starts to hide you from sight, and eventually the swamp would consume you.

The Swamp
When you first enter the swamp, you start to inhale the mist. The swamp mist makes you sleepy and you start to look around for somewhere to rest. Once you reach Mushroom Island and start to make a mushroom omelette, you may find yourself getting thirsty and may drink the swamp water, which makes you feel sleepy quite quickly.
The mist also carries mushroom spores. Once inhaled, the spores can affect your vision and hearing, making you see and hear unusual things. You will attempt to trace the source and be led to Mushroom Island.
I can find no obvious reason for the swamp suddenly appearing, there is no stream or river nearby. The conditions also do not favour mist formation, so I can only conclude that the swamp is magical and is probably a strong source of magic for the surrounding area.
The actual swamp itself does not seem to be unusual, but it is not subject to the seasonal fluctuations in water levels, temperature, pH, nitrate, phosphate, and dissolved oxygen levels. This again, is highly likely to be stabilised by the magical properties of the swamp.

Mist formation is aided by water, but generally only under specific conditions (high air pressure and rapid ground cooling). For a mist to form, the air has to become saturated with sufficient moisture to cool or to be cooled to a temperature to achieve condensation. So the permanent mist is most likely generated by magic.
So the Magic Mushrooms and the Deadly Swamp work in tandem to lure their victims to an untimely demise, unless you are strong enough to heed the warnings. Or if you are lucky, a knowledgeable passer-by may stop to help out.
The mushrooms have some natural aids, but the main mode of work here is magic.
Further research could be carried on the swamp itself to determine its exact magical properties. [End]
