Patty Liu - Silent Reflections

Epilogue

It was raining. Actually it was downright pouring. One thing Virginia definitely did not like about New York was the dreadful weather. They had been back in Manhattan for almost a month now. She had just put Little Peter down for a nap. Wolf was nowhere to be found, probably in the kitchen somewhere. Finally a quiet moment, she could catch up on her studying. Tony was enjoying his visit. He spent most of his time reading up on inventions and such in the encyclopedias or any other books he could find. Virginia was bewildered by why he’d be reading about such things and when she approached her father with that question, his answer was that he had to prepare himself for the industrial revolution he was going to throw the Nine Kingdoms into.

“So you’re intending on returning to the kingdoms then,” Virginia said.

“Crazy, isn’t it? But yeah. I sort of miss it. Life isn’t what it seems back there and that’s what I like. It sort gives my life a purpose more. Don’t you think?”

Virginia smiled and gave her father a quick peck on the cheek. She turned to run up the steps to her room to get her books. She had just made it past the front door when a hard pounding came from it. She froze from the startle she got. Wolf popped into the entryway and raised an eyebrow.

“Was that you, Lamb chop?”

“No, someone’s at the door.”

Wolf frowned. Who in the world could be out in this storm? Someone pounded again. Harder and louder this time. Wolf narrowed his eyes and scratched at his forehead.

“Just open the door, Wolf. It’s pouring outside,” Virginia said. So Wolf turned the doorknob and swung it open.

In the doorway stood a teenage girl who was half drenched but was still managing to hold an umbrella upright. She had dark hair that was cropped short and it was spiked up with gel in odd areas. She wore a pair of old ripped jeans and a T-Shirt that said WHERE’S THE BEEF? The only thing keeping her warm was a huge oversized jacket that was slumped on her small shoulders. The girl had the most astonishing blue eyes but they were currently opened incredibly wide and her mouth was also gaping open as if in shock.

The strangest feeling ran over Virginia. She shuddered. The girl was so familiar to her. Wolf sniffed at the strange girl but the rain was interfering. He cocked his head to the side and gave the girl a charming smile.

“Can we help you?” Wolf asked.

The girl finally closed her mouth and grinned. She stepped into the entryway and shook her head, shaking rainwater all over the place.

“I sure as hell hope so!” She folded up her umbrella and set it down in by the door.

“Well, umm… it would help if we knew who you are.” Virginia finally found her voice.

The odd girl grinned again and a twinkle sparkled in her eyes. Her grin turned into a huge smile and she soon began to chuckle softly to herself and shaking her head slightly.

“You’re probably going to hate me for this,” she finally said. “But I’m Dani. I’ve come a long way to find you and I-we really need your help.” She paused again and began fidgeting. “I’ve come from the year 2020 and errrr… I’m your daughter!”
