"It's been hours, what could possibly be taking so long?" Kid asked nervously. The delivery of the baby was taking a long time. Although Teaspoon and Rachel had warned him that it would, he was still worried, and why shouldn't he be? That was his girl in there. Ike sat down beside him on the fence, where Rachel had told them to stay until she was finished. ~Don't worry. I'm sure everything will be fine. She's a strong one, she's come out a winner in worse situations than this before.~ he signed with a comforting smile. As if on cue, a painful, distressed cry pierced the silent night. Kid's eyes widened in fear. "I'm going in there,"Kid said. "Oh no you're not," Jimmy intercepted. "Rachel said to stay out here until everything was finished, and that's what we're gonna do, now cool it already." Kid was Jimmy's good friend, but he was starting to get on everyone's nerves. Ecspecially mine, he thought. Cody smiled humorusly. He'd never seen Kid this stressed out. Cody had tried to keep his mouth shut, but his mouth ran away with him, as it usually did. Without thinking, he blurted out: "C'mon Kid, relax. What's the worst that can happen? It's not like she's gonna die or anything." All of them looked at Cody. He wasn't helping the situation any. Jimmy and Buck glared at him. Noah looked surprised. Ike looked nervously at Kid. Watching, waiting for him to get up. "I'm going," Kid said with a worried tone in his voice. Buck blocked his passage. "Look Kid, I know that you're worried. We all are. But if you storm in there like there's no tommorow, you might disturb the delivery, and I know that you don't want to do that." Buck's voice was calm, but inside he too was worried. They all liked the mother-to-be, but she and Kid had a special bond, and Buck could understand why Kid was worried. These words convinced Kid to stay out of the way. The last thing that she needed was problems, she'd had enough already. Noah looked thoughtfully at his nervous friend. Noah haden't been at the station very long, but he had become close to all of them quickly. He had been with them long enough to know the others' personality quriks. Kid was calm, cool, collected, and usually the most logical of the group, and now he was falling to pieces. The thought amused him. Noah smiled. Just then Jimmy saw Noah's smile. "What are you smiling about ?" Jimmy asked him. "I was just thinking about how surprised I am to see Kid this uptight," Noah replied. "Yeah, it is kinda funny," Cody commented on the subject. ~You think that everything's fuuny, Cody?~ Ike signed with a smile. With that , the whole group burst out laughing.They were glad for a chance to relax. All exept for Kid. "Yeah guys, laugh it up! Just wait until it's you're girl in there, crying out in pain, and your stubborn friends won't let you go and comfort her, and........." This outburst only made the group laugh harder. Even Jimmy was hysterical with laughter. Kid then stopped in mid-sentence. He started to chuckle, then laugh along with the rest of the group, temporarily forgetting his worries. Ike was the first one to recover from the mass hysteria. The door opened, and Rachel and Teaspoon came out slowly. The other boys didn't notice. ~How is she?~ Ike signed. Teaspoon cleared his throat to get the rest of them to hush. All at once, the boys stopped laughing. Kid looked at the newly arrived pair with worry. "Kid, you can go on in. The rest of you wait here. After all, the mamma and her new baby need some rest, ya know," Teaspoon said A wide, relieved smile spread across Kid's face as he rushed in to where the baby and her mom were waiting. "How's she doing?" asked Buck. "Good,a little tired, but in good shape," replied Teaspoon. "She did a lot better than we thought she would," Rachel said proudly. " Guys! Come 'ere!" Kid shouted. They all rushed in to where Kid was sitting. "It's a girl," he said smiling when the group had assembled. ~She looks just like her dad.~ signed a smiling Ike. "She's beautiful." Kid replied with tears in his eyes. There in the corrner lay a sweating, panting Katy. She looked very happy and proud. She whinned to her guests as if to say, Isn't my daughter beautiful? Kid crept over to her and put her head in his lap, stroking her neck. "I'm so proud of you girl," he told her with tears in his eyes. ~Look, she's already trying to walk.~ Ike signed with a smirk as the small foal stood up akwardly with her legs shaking undreneath her. After a few tries, she finally got up and stayed up. She neighed proudly. "She's a bit full of herself, but she has a right to be," Cody said. "Like someone else that we all know, not to point fingers, but......." Noah said, pointing his finger at Cody. Jimmy and Buck did the same. Ike just smiled and rolled his eyes. "She's so tiny," Buck said. "Yeah, she's like Lou. Puny but Spry to quote Teaspoon," Jimmy said with a smile. When Teaspoon first saw Lou, he had called her puny. Then she showed him what she could do, that she was as good as any of them, then he corrected himself, saying puny, but spry. "She'll make a good express horse someday," Jimmy added.
"Guys, we can't keep calling her she. We need to give her a name," Noah suggested. ~I've got it!~ Ike signed eagerly. ~We'll name her Midnight Star, because she's black like Lou's horse Lightning, and she has a little white star on her forehead.~ Ike smiled proudly at his idea. "I like it," said Teaspoon. "I love it," said Kid. "I bet you can't wait to show her to Lou when she comes back from Blue Creek tommorow," Cody said. "All of you need to get in the bed. Teaspoon, you've got a job to do, even with the arrival of this little bundle of joy," Rachel said smiling at the baby before her. "Ike and Buck have to go into town tommorow, Cody, you have a run, Noah and Jimmy have to fix the hole in the roof, and Kid, you've been worrying all day, so all of you get into bed. Not to mention the new mamma, who's worked harder than all of you put together today, so off with you! Say goodnight," Rachel ordered, shooing the boys out of the barn. One by one, the boys went to say goodnight to Midnight and to give congratulations to Katy and Kid. ~Goodnight Katy.~ Ike signed, and gave Midnight a kiss on the forehead and a giant hug to Kid. ~Congratulations!~ Ike signed with a happy smile. "Thanks Ike," Kid said. "Kid, let's go." Teaspoon said. "Gimme a minute, will ya?" Kid pleaded. Teaspoon nodded, smiling, and he walked Rachel back to her house. Kid patted the new baby. "Lou's gonna love you little one, just like I do." he told Midnight. She gave a proud little whimper in reply. Kid chuckled. Then he gave Katy a giant hug and a kiss on her forehead.
"I love you Katy," Kid told her. Katy neighed in reply.... I love you too! The End
