Noah woke up. It was going to be a long day.

“Come on Noah we have to get going to Redwood.” Cody bugged.

“I know.” Noah said.

“Here boys I have something for you to take!” Rachel walked in.

Cody looked at the basket. “FOOD!”

“Hey save some for me too!” Noah looked at Cody.

“Thanks Rachel.” Cody said.

Kid walked in. “That smells good. Can I have some?”

“No! It’s all mine.” Cody shouted.

“Umm.” Noah said.

“Oh and some is for Noah too.” Cody frowned.

“I will make you some pancakes too Kid.” Rachel said.

“You’re the best Rachel!” Kid smiled.

Lou walked in. “Hey! I thought I was the best.”

“Umm.” Kid worried.

Teaspoon walked in. “Noah, Cody you guys should have left a long time ago. I need those supplies from the store in Redwood.”

“Let’s go.” Noah pulled Cody away. “You can take the food with you.”

“Bye Cody! Bye Noah.” Lou giggled.

They rode into Redwood. It was a pretty town. Lots of people lived there. Cody saw three army men on horses riding towards them.

“Look at that Noah.”

“I wonder what they are doing here?” Noah said.

“I can ask them!” Cody decided.

“No! Better leave them alone.” Noah thought they looked bad. “Let’s just go to the store like Teaspoon asked.

Cody didn’t listen. He rode up to the captain on a big brown horse.

“What is the army here for?” Cody asked.

“We are looking for a slave that ran away. We want her back.”

“Uh oh.” Cody said riding away.

“Hey Lou.” Jimmy called.

“Hi Jimmy. Where are you going?”

“Oh me and Kid are going shopping. He was saving his money to buy a surprise for someone.” Jimmy explained.

“Who could that be?” Lou asked.

“Do you want to come?” Jimmy said.

“No I better stay here.” Lou smiled. She wondered what Kid would buy for her.

“Okay maybe Buck will come with me.” Jimmy said.

Kid walked past Lou.

“Hi Kid have fun in Sweetwater.” Lou smiled at him.

Kid was surprised. “I thought you were mad at me?”

“I couldn’t stay mad at you. I was joking.” Lou said.

Jimmy and Kid rode off.

“You’re in a good mood.” Rachel said.

“I’m thinking about what Kid is going to buy for me.” Lou said.

“Uh oh.” Said Buck, standing by Rachel.

“They are looking for a slave?” Noah yelled. “That’s not good. They shouldn’t have slaves. It’s mean.”

“I agree.” Cody said. “But try to tell the army that.”

“We have to help her.” Noah decided.

“Yes. But it might be hard.” Cody said.

“Maybe we should stick to getting supplies. It’s not our business.” Cody didn’t think this was a very good idea.

“You get supplies.” Noah shouted. “I’m going to find this lady.”

“Okay.” Cody went to the store.

Noah asked the people in the town. No one wanted to help him. The army scared them.

“I can tell you were she is.” A little boy walked up to him.

“Thank you.” Noah said. Finally some help.

Cody got everything on Teaspoon’s list. He went outside and saw that the army was watching Noah and where Noah was going. They would be mad if Noah helped the girl. Cody had to stop them.

Cody rode up to the captain again. “Hey I heard the army needs a new scout.”

“Yes we do.” The man said.

“Come with me.” Cody said. “I’m a good scout let me show you.”

The men went with Cody.

“Here she is.” The boy said. She was hiding in the stable.

“Are you a slave too?” She asked Noah.

“No I am a Pony Express rider.” He answered.

“Wow that’s great.” She smiled. She was very pretty.

“I’m going to help you get away from the army.” Noah said.

“Okay I will follow you.” She smiled.

“What’s your name?” He asked.

“Alice.” She said.

“My name is Noah. Let’s hurry.” He said. “I hope I can find Cody.”

Cody led the army men out of town and rode back so fast they couldn’t catch up.

“There you are.” Noah said.

“Hurry the army is coming!” Cody shouted.

Cody, and Noah and Alice quickly rode away.

Jimmy and Kid came back from Sweetwater. Lou was waiting for them.

“So Kid, what did you buy?” Lou asked.

“Me?” Kid asked. “Oh nothing.” He lied.

Lou thought maybe he was waiting till they were alone.

Jimmy didn’t know not to tell. “What about that thing you bought in town?”

“Shush Jimmy.” Kid frowned.

“Thing?” Lou asked. So Kid did buy her a present, she thought. “Is it for me?” She decided to ask.

“Ummm yeah.” Kid knew he made a mistake.

He pulled out a wrapped box. Lou opened it quickly.

“Hey!” She was confused. “These are horse brushes. Are they for Lightning?”

“They are for Katy. She will love new brushes.” Kid grinned.

“I thought you said it was for me?” Lou asked.

“Well you can brush her if you want.” Kid tried to make her not mad.

Lou stormed off. She wasn’t very happy.

Noah, Cody, and Alice came riding back.

“Who is that girl behind Noah on his horse?” Buck said.

“I don’t know.” Teaspoon said.

Ike came out to watch them too.

“This is Alice.” Noah said to them. “She was a slave. I helped her get away from bad men.”

“Well now you are free.” Teaspoon smiled.

“Do you want to stay for dinner?” Rachel asked.

“What are you making?” Alice asked.

“Meatloaf!” Rachel said.

“That’s my very favorite food. I can stay for dinner.”

“That means less food for me?” Cody said.

“No I made you your own meatloaf Cody.”

“Yay.” Cody smiled. “My own meatloaf.”

“What about us?” Jimmy asked.

“You guys can share.” Rachel said.

Kid grumbled.

“I have to go do something before dinner.” Kid said.

“Yeah, with Katy.” Lou was still mad. Kid left.

“Can I talk to you Lou?” Rachel asked.

“Sure Rachel.” Lou said. “What do you want to talk about?”

“Well I know your upset that Kid didn’t buy something for you. He still likes you. Sometimes he has to do things for others too.”

“You’re right Rachel.” Said Lou. “I should say I’m sorry to him.”

Lou hurried off to the barn. When she got to the barn Kid was brushing. The horse he was brushing wasn’t Katy. He was brushing Lightning.

“I hope this makes things better.” Kid said.

“No I’m sorry. I was rude.” Lou explained.

“Lightning sure looks good.” Lou said. “Can I brush Katy next?”

“You sure can.” Kid smiled.
