Chapter 1:

A group of masked men armed with rifles and handguns made their way into the bank. “Everybody freeze!” Those two simple words threw everyone in the bank into a state of confusion, shock, and fear. A few people screamed but they were soon silenced by the sound of gunfire. One of the armed guards had been reaching for his gun but was shot quickly by one of the men. “Come on move! Move!” The armed men urged the bank clerks. One man who held a handgun looked at his watch and yelled, “Two minutes!” Suddenly a small flashing light caught his attention. Someone tripped the silent alarm. “Let’s go! Someone hit the si-“ he was cut off by the screeching of police sirens in the distance. “Damn” he muttered. The rest of the men finished collecting the money and started toward the door. The getaway car parked in front sped away and in the blink of an eye they were all gone.

In the car Juan Diaz was trying to catch his breath. One of the men turned to him, “Hey Diaz! When did you see the alarm?” “I caught it late. When I looked up from my watch it was already flashing.” He replied, still catching his breath. “Oh what I would give to shoot the bitch who tripped that alarm!” The man yelled. Inwardly Juan shuddered and thought of how he couldn’t have bared to see another person shot in cold blood. A voice shook him from his thoughts. “Well boys! It looks like we have about ten grand in our little hands!” A joyous holler rang around the car. Juan on the other hand was trying to calm his heart from the past events. The only thought ringing in his head was, ‘Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald what have you gotten yourself into? What would Mama, Theresa and Miguel think of you running around with a bunch of murderous thieves?’ Luis gave a sharp sigh, but quickly composed himself. He just smiled and pretended to be overjoyed with the sight of the stolen money. -------------------------

It had been four years since he left Harmony and almost two years since he started his undercover work for the New York Police Department. His job was to go undercover as a thief in order to become part of a notorious gang of robbers. Normally, they would’ve arrested these bastards but it leaked out that they might be part of a plan to kidnap a wealthy heir later in the year. Alone in his room Luis, undercover as Juan Diaz, was getting ready for bed. His thoughts were jumbled up in a cloudy haze of loneliness. He looked around his small, dingy apartment. To avoid being found out as a cop he only had a few things. He kept even fewer things from his past life as Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald. The things he did keep were hidden in an old cigar box in the back of his closet. Luis feeling especially lonely tonight made his way to his closet and pulled out the box. It was filled with a few things including a picture of his family and Sheridan.

He missed his family so much. When he left everything was finally coming together for them. Earlier in the year Luis had found out that Martin was really dead and not missing. Pilar was devastated of course but told Luis that at least she could find closure knowing that Martin was resting in peace with God. Theresa was just beginning her life with Ethan Bennett. Just the thought of Ethan as a Bennett and not a Crane made Luis smile. Who knew? Ivy of course but it was a shock to everyone. During the whole ordeal Luis had really gotten to know Ethan and didn’t mind that he and Theresa harbored feelings for each other. Miguel on the other hand was still with Charity.

Luis remembered how he used to tease his brother by asking when he would break up with Charity, Miguel would often get mad and say, ‘never’. Luis gave a thoughtful smile remembering their conversation. And Sheridan…. most of his thoughts were about her. He slowly put the picture back in the box and pulled out his wedding band. He sighed thinking of what might have been. After all it was only two months before he and Sheridan were to be wed that he disappeared.

After a few moments Luis replaced the ring back in the box and put the box away. He didn’t like thinking about how he let each of them done by leaving, but he had to. Luis remembered back to when he was first approached by Alistair Crane. He was surprised and scared at the same time. What Alistair said to him was simple: leave town, never comeback and no one will get hurt. Of course he refused but Alistair guaranteed that if he and Sheridan were to be married people would be hurt and consequences would be paid. Luis couldn’t bear to see anyone in his family hurt so he agreed to leave not wanting to take any chances. He left Harmony later that day and never looked back.

All of that seemed like ages ago to Luis. He sighed for what seemed like the millionth time that day. He often thought about Sheridan, how her life was, if she was happy, and so on. In the back of his mind he thought that there was still a chance for them to be together but in reality he knew better than to think of things that were impossible. A few months back he found out she had married a CEO by the name of John Bentley. The news came as a shock but didn’t really surprise him because he knew Sheridan would eventually move on. What did surprise him was that they had been married for more than three years! Luis was devastated and heartbroken; he and Sheridan had something special, yet she married some stranger only months after he left. His pain soon turned to anger and he wondered how she could easily forget about what they had. They were engaged for crying out loud! Luis however, managed to keep the whole thing in the back of his mind and thankful that he could bury himself in his undercover duties.

His thoughts soon shifted to the events that happened earlier that day. Although he had been part of the gang for almost a year it was the first time Luis was ever part of a major “hit”. It took Luis, or rather Juan, a long time to earn the entire gangs trust. Deck, the gang’s leader was surprisingly an easy believer. It was Deck who invited Luis to be a part of their gang. Since Deck was the leader everyone followed suit. But Luis had to be careful; despite Deck’s disarming personality he was a real monster at heart. Suddenly, a knock interrupted Luis’ thoughts.

Chapter 2:

Slowly Luis got up and answered the door. “Hey Diaz, the boss wants us to meet him at his office.” It was Lee, a new addition to the gang. He was just a kid really, in his early twenties a real adrenaline junkie and a major womanizer, or as he put it a “player”. In other words, a stuck up, fast-talking jerk. “Yeah, just give me a few minutes.” Luis replied. Soon Luis and Lee made their way to an unmarked building. When they arrived everyone was already there. There were only five of them in the whole gang: Deck, Lee, Joe, Moss and himself. There was also the “Head” or someone that even Deck worked under but Luis still didn’t know who he was. Joe and Moss were brothers. If there were ever two people who looked like “average crooks”, it was them, two unshaven, big toughs.

Just as Luis thought, they were getting their cut from the bank money, two grand each. “Here ya go boys.” Deck said handing them each two wads of hundreds. After everyone had their cash Deck said he had some other business he wanted to discuss. Just the tone of Deck’s voice made everyone know that whatever it was, it was big. “That’s it boys. We’re done with the small time. From this point on we’re no longer robbers, thieves or whatever you want to call it. We’re stepping into the big time.” Everyone was slightly confused with Deck’s little speech but no one said a word.

“Now I know that you all must think that I’ve gone crazy but I just spoke with the Head.” This certainly caught Luis’ attention. Although everyone only referred to whomever it was as the “Head” they only talked about him if it was about something important. “We got something major going down. This Sunday evening there’s a benefit at the Convention Center. Everyone who’s anyone is going to be there. Our job is to kidnap some dignitary and hold’em for ransom.” Deck said finishing. After a few while Joe spoke up first, “Ransom huh? How much are we talk’n about here?” “Somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 million dollars.” Deck answered calmly. There was a gasp from everyone in the room. Lee gave a low whistle and said, “Is anyone even worth that much money?”

“Yeah, who is it?” Luis asked curiously. “The Head didn’t say much, hell he didn’t even tell who we were kidnapping but I’ll be in contact with him Sunday morning. He said he’d tell me everything else then. He also gave strict orders. Only two of you will come with me when we kidnap the rich bastard. That’s gonna be Joe and Moss. Juan and Lee will stay here. After the kidnapping we’re coming straight here, this is going to be the center of operations folks.” Deck said waving his hand referring to the building. ---------------------------------

After giving a few more instructions they were free to go. While the rest of the gang went to spend their cut in bars Luis went straight to a pay phone. He quickly punched in a phone number and waited for someone to pick up. “Glenson here,” A voice said over the receiver. “This is Lopez, meet me at the Corner Street Diner in half an hour.” Luis said as he hung up. Half an hour later Luis pulled into the parking lot of an old diner. He looked over his shoulder and went inside. Sitting at a table in the corner was Chris Glenson head of the undercover investigation unit of the NYPD. When Luis joined the NYPD he decided to drop the Fitzgerald and stick to Lopez. He quickly sat down on the chair facing Glenson, who was enjoying a cup of coffee. “What’ve you got?” he asked. Luis quickly went over the details. When Luis was finished talking all Glenson could do was mutter under his breath.

“Damn, we never thought they were gonna move this quickly.” Luis could sense his frustration. Almost two years of undercover work led to this point. “Any leads on the Head?” Glenson asked. “Not yet, I mean the man’s a virtual ghost. No one’s ever seen him yet all of us work under him. Hell, he could even be a woman for all I know.” Luis answered. All Glenson could do was give a little chuckle. He looked over at Luis, even though he was his boss they were really good friends. However, even though they were friends Luis was still somewhat of a mystery to him. Most of the men in his department didn’t really want to go on long undercover duties because of their families. Luis was an exception; in fact Luis never talked about his family. He often wondered why but he respected Luis’ privacy. “So how are you holding up?” He asked. “I’m not gonna lie to you man. The heat is definitely going up, but you know, whatever happens I’ll be ready. Just count on me, okay?” Luis replied firmly.

“I know I can, but if things get to be-“ Luis cut him off, “Don’t worry about me, this is almost a done deal. Things won’t get out of control because I got things under control alright?” Glenson looked Luis straight in the eye. He knew a lot of men who had gone undercover for long periods of time and lost touch with their real lives because they get too wrapped up in their fabricated undercover personalities. “Yeah well, I should let you get some sleep. Contact me when this thing goes down, okay?” Glenson said as he put some money on the table and got up to leave. “Yeah, I will.” Luis said as he also got up. In the parking lot Glenson turned to him and said, “Be careful Luis, I know you don’t want to hear this but some things that happen can and will be out of your control. And nothing you can do will prepare you for what might when this thing goes down.” He looked at Luis one last time trying to make him understand and left.

Chapter 3:

The days leading up to Sunday were very tense and though it was on everyone’s mind no one talked about the kidnapping. When Sunday finally rolled around everyone was anxious. They all met at Deck’s place at 5:00 pm. Deck had been on the phone all morning with the Head making sure the plan was sure fire and foolproof. At seven, Deck summoned Joe and Moss and the three left. Deck hadn’t told them a word about who they were kidnapping or even how.

Luis and Lee were only given two things to do. They were supposed to prepare a room for their “guest”. The second instruction applied to all five men. Whenever they were in sight of the hostage they had to keep a ski mask on. This was to prevent the hostage from recognizing them. Luis knew that Lee and he would probably be partnered up when the two-guard shift was put into action. This was because Joe and Moss worked well together and therefore they would team up. Luis couldn’t complain, even though Lee was obnoxious Luis could order him around because he had been in the gang longer.

He turned to Lee and asked, “So what do you think of all of this?” “I don’t really give a damn. I mean what’s with all the rules anyway?” “Well rules are rules especially when they’re rules set by the Head.” Luis said knowingly. “Well whatever, screw the rules and the Head. It’s all bullshit anyway.” Lee muttered. “Why’d you get mixed up in all of this anyway?” Luis asked. “Are you kidding me? Imagine how much we get in our cut! Man, I’d probably be set for life!” Lee exclaimed.

Luis laughed at his comment and Lee just looked back at him. “So what do you think?” “What do I think? I think most of the that 20 mil is going to the Head and that we’d probably screwed in the end.” Luis said realistically. “What do you mean?” Lee asked confused. “Well 20 mil isn’t exactly chump change. I figure most, if not all that money, is going towards something more important than five thugs from a gang.” Lee was about to say something else when they heard a car door slam outside. Luis looked at Lee, “Looks like our guest just arrived.”

They opened the door and let them in. Joe and Moss carried in the hooded person who appeared to be drugged. They brought the person into the room with Deck, Lee and Luis following close behind. “So who did we kidnap? Who is he?” Lee asked. Deck walked up to the person and pulled off the hood. “Not a he, a she.” Luis had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from screaming. Lying on the bed was Sheridan Crane! He tried to keep quiet but instead he answered out, “Sheridan?” They all looked at him.

“You know her?” Deck questioned pointing to the unconscious woman. Luis looked back up at him, with a dazed look in his eyes, “No, no. I’ve only heard about her. She’s Sheridan Crane.” Luis replied. “So what’s the big deal?” Lee asked. “She belongs to one of the wealthiest families in America.” Luis answered quietly. “Yeah, well that’s why we kidnapped her.” Joe said. “What did you give her?” Luis asked walking closer to her. “Only a few sniffs of chloroform, she should be up in a few hours.” Moss replied.

Luis looked down at her for the first time in four years. She was still beautiful, even more so then he remembered. He wanted to reach out and touch her but he had to keep himself calm, knowing there were others in the room. Suddenly Deck’s voice shook him out of his trance. “First shift is on tonight, Juan and Lee that’s you.” As they all made their way out of the room Luis thought to himself, ‘this is going to be a long night.’

Chapter 4:

Sheridan woke up with a splitting headache. She groaned as she sat up. After her eyes adjusted to the light in the room, she looked around. She remembered going to the powder room to reapply her lipstick when someone came from behind her and put something over her mouth. The next thing she knew she woke up in the little room. ‘Where am I?’ She thought. -------------------

Outside Lee and Luis were watching some TV. “So did you hear?” Lee asked. “Hear what?” “That Julian Crane is the one coming up with the 20 mil?” “Since when did Julian care about his sister?” Luis said to himself. “What did you say?” “Nothing, how did you find out?” “It was in the news earlier.” “What about her husband?” “He’s off in Paris somewhere on business.” Luis was just about to ask another question when they heard a crashing noise coming from Sheridan’s room. They looked at each other and got up, putting their masks on as they made their way to the room.

Inside the room, Sheridan tried hopelessly to break the barred windows with a bar she managed to dislodge from her cot. She was about to try again, when she heard footsteps approaching her door. Quickly she hid behind the door and waited. Once she saw the masked man step into the room she swung at his head. A sickening “whack” sounded throughout the room as the bar connected with Lee’s head. Once the man hit the ground Sheridan bolted through the open door. She didn’t get far before she bumped into another masked man but before she fell the man caught her.

Luis looked down into Sheridan’s terrified eyes. Luis never thought Sheridan would ever look at him that way. He slowly guided her back into her room, where he saw Lee lying unconscious on the floor. Luis stifled a laugh; she was still tough. Once they were inside, he sat Sheridan down on the cot and walked over to Lee. “Who are you people and why did you kidnap me?” Sheridan demanded. “You’re in no position to talk in that way Miss Crane.” Luis replied back simply, disguising his voice.

Sheridan was silent for a moment, studying the man in front of her. “You did it for the money, didn’t you? Luis stopped tending to Lee and looked up at Sheridan, “of course.” Inside Luis cringed, he didn’t want to say it but he wanted to sound convincing. “Then I was right about you. You’re just a greedy, cold hearted monster!” Sheridan yelled.

Before Luis knew what she was doing, Sheridan reached for the bar on the floor and swung it at him. ‘Maybe I was too convincing.’ Luis thought as he ducked, missing a concussion by a few inches. Before Sheridan could get in another swing, he grabbed her arm, stopping her. Sheridan turned her cheek thinking he was going to hit her. When he didn’t, she looked up at him with a surprised look on her face.

“Be careful Miss Crane, the next time you try anything I just might do something I might regret. You are not going to be treated like a princess here, and compared to the others I’m rather reasonable. My suggestion is to do what we say and don’t cause any trouble.” He let Sheridan go and turned back to Lee who was groaning and trying to sit up. He helped him up and left the room. Sheridan never felt so alone in her life. She walked to the cot and lay down sobbing.

Chapter 5:

It had been 3 weeks since they kidnapped Sheridan and things had become routine for everyone – well as routine as something like a kidnapping could get. Everyone took their turns on the shifts in guarding Sheridan and Luis had managed to control himself whenever he was around her, although there were times when Luis just had to see her. More often then necessary Luis would find reasons to check up on her, by bringing her water or simply using the excuse to “check” on their victim.

Other times Luis would sneak into Sheridan’s room while she was sleeping. It was during these quiet moments, when Luis would just watch her sleep, that he ached for Sheridan the most. However, whenever he thought about telling Sheridan the truth, that it was him, before he lost all his self-control, he stopped himself. All he had to do was look around him, at their situation. He was undercover and she was married, it was as simple and complicated as that. It was all Luis had to think about to keep himself in check and that’s how Luis got through the days, dreaming for a life that wasn’t his and living with the reality that was.

----------------------------- Luis squinted as he glanced up at the bright and sunny sky. The weather did not match his dark mood and did nothing but aggravate him further. It wasn’t suppose to be so beautiful outside when everything in his life was so messed up Luis thought angrily. He didn’t get much sleep the night before, all his dreams were haunted by thoughts of Sheridan and the life they could have had. For the past few nights the dreams were becoming more vivid, more intense, more real. So much so, that Luis was having trouble concentrating. He sighed as he finally reached the dark and shadowed confines of the building. ‘Another day,’ he thought, ‘Another day having to face Sheridan without really facing her.’

It was quiet when Luis entered the floor Sheridan was being kept. He was expecting to see Lee watching some TV or eating but he was nowhere to be seen. ‘Where the hell is he?’ Luis thought to himself. He just shrugged and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water for Sheridan. With glass in hand he walked towards Sheridan’s room hearing muffled noises. Curious he quickened his pace and before opening the door, put his mask on. When he opened the door he wasn’t prepared for what he saw.

There on the cot was Lee on top of Sheridan. His shirt was off as well as his mask. He had forced Sheridan to lie down. Her wrists were tied and Lee held them above her head. It was obvious she had been struggling. Her face was flushed and tears had gathered in the corners of her eyes. Luis could tell she was trying to be strong, but the look on her face suggested otherwise. All of Luis’ thoughts were going a thousand miles. Both of them didn’t even notice him until he dropped the glass of water he was holding.

--------------------------- Sheridan didn’t see the door open. Inside her head she was praying. ‘How could this happen to me?’ She thought, desperately trying to stay strong. The man had come into her room a few minutes earlier. She thought he was just going to check up on her. Instead, he took off his mask, gave her a nasty grin and started towards her. She screamed but he just hit her. She tried stopping him; but what could she do? She just closed her tear filled eyes and hoped for a savior – a miracle.

Just then a crashing noise caught her attention. At the door was another one of the kidnapper’s. ‘He must have been bringing me some water.’ Sheridan thought her eyes surveying the broken glass and water on the floor. Suddenly she realized she didn’t know what the man would do. ‘Oh God, what if he just walks away or he….’ She stopped and shuddered, ‘no!’ She looked up at the man, her eyes pleading to him. ‘Help me!’ She begged silently.

-------------------------- Once Luis looked into Sheridan’s eyes he lost it. He flew at Lee, pulled him off of Sheridan and punched him. The blood was rushing to Luis’ head and his adrenaline was pumping, he couldn’t even think straight. He grabbed Lee, punched him before picking him up, and threw him across the small room. Lee landed on the floor with a ‘thud’, his body sliding before coming to a stop against the wall in the corner of the room. Luis’ chest was heaving. He walked towards Lee and picked him up again. He dragged him through the open door. Once they were in the hallway he slammed the door shut and threw Lee against the wall. Luis ripped off his mask and yelled at Lee,

“What the hell were you doing in there?” “You know damn well what I was doing! Why the hell do you care about what happens her anyways? Goddammit, what the hell did you do that for?” Lee questioned, anger and embarrassment tainting his voice. “Why did I do that? I was saving your ass!” Luis said, covering up his true intentions. “What are you talking about man?” Lee said rubbing his jaw. “Did you even think? You might have just screwed the whole operation!” Luis replied still trying to fight the emotions building inside of him

“What?” Lee asked. “Where’s your mask Lee? You know the black thing that’s suppose to be on your face every time you see the hostage?” Luis paused for effect. “You just broke one of the Head’s orders. You know if Deck found out about this he would be mad as hell.” While Luis was saying this the color in Lee’s face was draining. Luis just smirked, “Have you ever seen Deck mad? I mean really mad? Cause I have, and it’s not a pretty sight.” Luis said taunting him.

Lee got the picture. “You…you aren’t gonna tell him are you? Cause – I – well, I mean, I didn’t do anything to her.” Lee said quickly his words tripping over each other as he spoke. Luis almost laughed aloud because now it was Lee’s eyes pleading with him. “Look, I won’t say anything alright? The whole thing didn’t happen.” Luis answered back calmly. A wave of relief washed over Lee, “Hey, you’re alright man.”

“Yeah, just don’t touch her again alright? Oh and you might want to get yourself washed up.” Luis said pointing to Lee’s scratched up arm and busted lip. After Lee left, Luis took a deep breath, put his mask back on and prepared to enter the room.

Chapter 6:

Inside the room Sheridan lay paralyzed with fear. She was going over the events in her head and she was shocked by how it had turned out. She didn’t know what to expect when she saw the other man, but she was surprised that he pulled that creep off her. Slowly she sat up, trying to catch her breath. Suddenly the door opened and the same man that pulled the other guy off of her entered.

He was carrying another glass of water and a dustpan. With steady strides, he walked towards her, untying her hands before handing her the glass. With uncertainty Sheridan took the glass of water with shaking hands. Once she had the cup the man turned and began to clean up the broken glass. As Sheridan began to drink the water she studied the man crouched before her. He seemed exactly like all the others, but then again he wasn’t. ‘Why did this man save me?’ Sheridan questioned, grateful for his act of kindness but confused at the same time.

Even though Luis had his back facing her, he could feel her eyes studying him. Just the idea that Sheridan was looking at him made his temperature rise. He quickly finished cleaning up and left the room to throw away the broken shards of glass. When he entered the room again he found Sheridan staring at him intently. He walked in and picked up Lee’s mask and shirt. He saw Sheridan’s empty cup and in a gruff voice asked her,

“Are you done with that?” Sheridan looked down at the empty cup and answered, “Yeah.” As she handed him the cup she looked into his eyes. ‘Why do I feel like I’ve met him before?’ Sheridan wondered to herself. Before she could figure out why, he broke the gaze they were holding and turned around. Mentally, Luis was beating himself up for being captivated by her eyes. Luis had his back turned when he heard Sheridan’s voice. “Thank you.” She said softly.

Luis was so surprised that he turned around. “What?” He asked. Her voice faltered and she shifted her gaze to her hands, “I-I just wanted to say thank you for what you did. You didn’t have to stop him but you did, so thank you.” She said as she lifted her eyes to meet his. “Oh. Well you’re welcome.” Was all Luis could say as he stared dumbfounded into her eyes.

For a while he just stood there not sure what to do. He was torn, as much as he wanted to help Sheridan he just couldn’t compromise the mission. His heart was pounding so much he wondered if Sheridan could hear it beat inside his chest. His heart was telling him to kiss her while his head was screaming to get away before he did something stupid. ‘Like telling her the truth?’ Luis wondered.

While he was standing there Sheridan was also contemplating on what to do, and she had to think fast. What if she could convince the man to let her go? He had already saved her once; he must not be all that bad. Sheridan knew it was her only chance and that she had to take it. Finally, Luis was able to get his feet to move again and he cursed them for following his head instead of his heart. He had already turned to leave when he heard her voice again.

“Please,” she begged him, “let me go.” “I can’t do that.” Luis said looking down, unable to meet her eyes. “Please, I’ll pay twice what they’re paying you.” She pleaded, her voice cracking from emotion. Luis couldn’t stand to hear Sheridan in so much pain, but he couldn’t do anything. “Look, just do what we say and we’ll let you go.” Luis said trying to make her understand although he knew she wouldn’t. With that Luis headed for the door. His hand was already on the doorknob when he heard her voice from behind him.

“Wait, please I am begging you. I have a family.” Luis had his eyes clenched shut. ‘You always promised to keep her safe and shield her from any pain. Yet you’re the one doing this to her.’ He thought. He opened his eyes and saw his knuckles had turned white from clutching the doorknob so hard. Slowly he turned around. When Sheridan saw this she continued, “Please, just let me go. I promise I won’t tell the police anything. Please, I have a daughter!”

Luis felt a sudden wave of nausea flow through him, ‘did Sheridan just say she had a daughter?!’ All of Luis’ remaining hopes of starting a life Sheridan were crushed. Luis was devastated, it felt like someone put a bomb in his heart and the timer just finished its countdown to zero. He turned around abruptly and opened the door.

“I’ve already told you I can’t do anything. Just do what we say and soon you’ll be safe and sound with your family.” His last statement was dripping with sarcasm. Before Sheridan could react he was gone. ‘Why did he turn so cold all of a sudden?’ she thought.

In the hallway Luis was leaning against the closed door. His mind was spinning; he still couldn’t believe that Sheridan had a daughter! All of a sudden, the walls in the hallway seemed to close in on him and Luis had to take a deep breath to try to calm himself down. He needed to get his mind clear; he needed to get out of here. He walked dazedly into the main room and headed toward the door. Lee yelled after him, “Hey! Where you goin?!” “Out.” Was all Luis said before shutting the door.

Chapter 7:

Luis was walking around Central Park deep in thought when his cell phone rang. He didn’t bother to answer it and let it ring, hoping the person would just hang up. When it didn’t stop ringing Luis sighed, he was tired, just tired. Tired of his undercover duties, tired of his where his life had ended up, but mostly he was tired because he felt so alone. He answered the phone wearily, “Hello?” “It’s Glenson, where are you?” The voice said on the line. “In Central Park.” Luis answered.

“All right, meet me at the 6th avenue entrance in twenty minutes.” Glenson replied before hanging up. Luis ended the call and wondered why Glenson wanted to meet with him in the middle of the day. Twenty minutes later Glenson arrived to see Luis, looking quite dejected, sitting down on one of the benches. Slowly he made his way toward him and sat down. “What’s wrong with you? You look like someone just killed your cat.” Glenson asked.

Luis looked at him and replied, “I don’t have a cat.” Glenson smiled, he was worried about Luis but after hearing him make a joke, he relaxed a little. “Seriously, what’s wrong?” Glenson asked again. Luis waved it off, “nothing, just a bad day that’s all.” He hoped Glenson would buy the excuse and let it pass. Glenson nodded, “Well I have info that might make you feel better.” “What’ve you got?” Luis asked intrigued.

“We got something on the head.” Glenson replied. “Okay you got my attention, go on.” Luis replied, sitting up a little straighter. “Well you know Sheridan’s husband is supposed to be in Paris right?” Glenson asked. Luis nodded, “Yeah, so?” “So, he’s been spotted right here in New York. Intel from Paris said he took a plane here.” Glenson replied matter-of-factly.

“Why would Bentley come here now, when he didn’t come when Sheridan was first kidnapped?” Luis asked, confused. “Exactly. I was suspicious too. So that’s why I got Clarke to tail him for a couple of days. But it was tough, especially since he was traveling with an alias and false identification.” Glenson said. “Why would Bentley do that?” Luis asked again even more confused. “Wait there’s more. Last night we caught up with Bentley and he was meeting someone. And surprise, surprise, we found him meeting with none other than Mark Deckard.” Glenson replied.

“Wait a minute, Deck? Why would he….” Luis paused then continued, “Deck was supposed to be meeting with the Head yesterday night!” “Bingo! It looks like we found the Head.” Glenson finished triumphantly. Luis meanwhile, was having a hard time processing the facts in his mind. “Why would he kidnap his own wife?!” Luis asked incredulously. “I don’t know, but since we finally tagged the bastard we have to close this thing up fast. When is Julian supposed to show up with the money?” Glenson asked.

“Tuesday.” Luis replied running a hand through his hair, his mind still not believing what he had just heard. “That leaves us three days to work out a plan.” Glenson said thoughtfully. Luis looked down at his watch, “Hey, I better get going. I’ll meet up with you and the rest of the crew tomorrow to start makin plans okay?” Glenson nodded, “I’ll see you tomorrow then.” ----------------------

When Luis arrived back at the warehouse, he was surprised to find everyone there. Lee approached him, “where the hell have you been?” When Luis didn’t answer Lee continued, “The Head is here.” Luis turned to him surprised, “What?!” “You heard me, he is inside Deck’s office right now.” Lee replied. “Who is he?” Luis asked already knowing the answer. “Bentley. John Bentley. I mean can you believe it? He got his own wife kidnapped! What some people do for love, huh?” Lee said sarcastically.

Suddenly the door to Deck’s office opened. Deck and a well-dressed man around Luis’ age stepped out of the office. “Ah, Juan I’m glad your finally here. I’d like you to meet John Bentley.” Deck said introducing the two. Despite Deck’s introduction, Luis stood rooted in place. It would be a cold day in hell before he would be the first to approach the bastard Luis thought to himself. Finally, Bentley cleared his throat and stepped forward to shake his hand. Luis looked at his outstretched hand and made sure to shake it very firmly. It took everything in him but Luis managed to keep himself from killing the man right at that moment.

“Nice to meet you Juan.” Bentley said his voice slick and businessman like. Luis didn’t reply, instead he gave a curt nod. With the formalities over, Bentley turned back towards the rest of the men in the room. “Now, where is my lovely wife? I’d like to pay her a visit.” Bentley said his voice mocking. While all the men laughed, all Luis could do was clench his teeth and grip the gun in his jacket even harder.

All the men made their way to Sheridan’s room where they found her asleep. Inside, Bentley motioned them to stay back and then he slowly walked towards her and then kneeled by her bedside. He gently stroked her hair and quietly murmured in her ear urging her to wake-up. Slowly Sheridan’s eyes fluttered open. As Luis watched from a far, he heard Sheridan’s gasp of surprise as she recognized her husband. “John!” She cried out as she threw her arms around him.

After a while she pulled out of his hug and held his face in her hands, “Wha – what are you doing here? They didn’t do anything to you, did they?” She asked her voice filled with concern. Luis felt his own jealousy rise, ‘Why did she care so much for this jerk?’ He thought. Bentley meanwhile removed Sheridan’s hands from his face, “Ah no, actually I’m their special guest.”

He answered while giving a little chuckle. It was only then that Sheridan noticed the group of men at the doorway of the room. A look of confusion crossed her face, “I don’t understand…” She replied, her gaze shifting from her husband to the men. Bentley laughed again and stood up bringing Sheridan to her feet as well. “No, I don’t think you do.” He said before continuing, “You see, I know these men.” He said motioning to them. Sheridan’s face turned pale as she realized what was going on, she shook her head, “No!” She whispered.

“Yes. You see my dear, these men work for me.” Bentley replied his voice meaning to hurt her in every way. The tears that had been forming in her eyes began to fall, “No,” she repeated again. Bentley simply laughed, “What’s the matter Sheridan? You don’t believe me? Why don’t you ask one of them?” He said as he laughed mockingly.

Sheridan stood there crying, “How could you do this to me? You’re supposed to be my husband! I-I thought you loved me!” She said her voice cracking from emotion. Bentley just laughed bitterly and faced her, “Oh Sheridan. No one could ever love you, just your money.” He laughed again. At that point, Luis didn’t care what would happen to him, he wasn’t about to let this guy humiliate and hurt Sheridan like that; he took his gun out of its holster and was prepared to shoot Bentley with it.

The only thing that stopped him was the change in Sheridan’s composure. When Bentley said this all the sadness in Sheridan’s eyes melted away into anger. With the strength she had left, she slapped Bentley square on the cheek. Bentley staggered back a few steps, surprised. When he regained his composure, he held his hand to his cheek. “Why you little bitch!” he muttered. He took two steps toward her and slapped her hard. Sheridan fell to the ground clutching her cheek, her silent tears falling on to the floor.

Choosing to make a further spectacle of Sheridan, Bentley added, “She chooses not to believe what she knows is true.” He gave her a disgusted look before storming out. As the rest of the gang started to leave, Luis got one last look at Sheridan’s crumpled body sobbing on the floor. It was then that he vowed to free Sheridan, even if it meant giving up his life to do so.

Chapter 8:

It had been two days since Luis had last seen Sheridan. Between formulating a plan with Glenson, and meeting with the gang to discuss the final stages of Sheridan’s kidnapping, he had been busy. In the intense two days of discussion Luis found out that Bentley was only planning to keep Sheridan alive long enough to reassure Julian she was safe. Later on that evening Bentley planned to move Sheridan nearer to the drop off point. Luis figured this was the best time to get Sheridan out of there so he and Glenson planned to put an end to the whole thing that evening.

Luis was in his apartment getting ready to finally rescue Sheridan from her hell. He finished dressing, grabbing his cell phone, keys and gun when someone knocked on his door unexpectedly. Luis stopped in mid motion and stared at the door, wondering who the hell it was. He had been on edge ever since Bentley turned out to be the head so he didn’t welcome any sudden disturbances. He opened the door annoyed, only to find Bentley standing on the other side. “Mr. Bentley.” Luis managed to say without choking on his words, both from disgust from referring to him as ‘Mr.’ and from surprise. “Juan.”

Bentley replied calmly, “May I come in?” He asked. All of Luis’ senses were sharpened, something wasn’t right and although he sensed this, his exterior didn’t show it. “Of course,” Luis said as he moved away from the doorway to let Bentley in, “but aren’t we suppose to be meeting with Deck and the others at the building?” He asked. Bentley strolled in, his hands in his pockets, as he made himself comfortable by sitting down on the sofa, “Yes we are, but I wanted to come talk to you first.” Luis raised a brow, “Oh? What about?” He asked, hating the way that Bentley walked into his apartment as if he owned it. He closed the door cautiously.

“You don’t like me very much do you Juan?” Bentley asked thoroughly surprising Luis by his question. When Luis didn’t answer Bentley continued, “Oh come on Juan, you don’t have to lie. I mean your silence does more than answer the question.” He said leaning forward, his voice prodding. Luis turned to look him in the eye, ‘no sense in lying’ he thought. “No, your right I don’t like you very much.” He said his voice strong and even. Bentley laughed, shaking a finger at him, “An honest man, I like that. Not much of those around these days.” He said. Luis looked at him skeptically, “Yeah, right.”

After a moment of silence Luis continued, “I don’t want to come off as rude, ” although he meant to, “but what’s this all about?” By now Bentley had stood up from the couch and wondered over to his desk, he ran a hand over the worn woodwork, and looked at Luis across the room. “Nice desk,” He said as he moved his gaze from Luis to survey the rest of the room, “I also liked what you’ve done to the place.” He finished, seemingly ignoring Luis’ question. “I’ll give you the number of my decorator.”

Luis snapped back as he fought to control both his patience and temper. Bentley gave a low chuckle, his gaze returning to the desk, his fingertips still grazing the desktop, “The wood for this desk is really of good quality. Despite its sheen, it allows its character and past to show through the grain.” He paused to look up at Luis, “It’s kind of like you in that way.” He concluded. Luis was put on the defensive, “what’s that suppose to mean?” He asked although he was dreading to find out the answer.

“Oh I think you know exactly what I mean. You know, when I first met you I thought you looked familiar, I shrugged it off, but something just kept nagging at me.” Bentley said as he took out his gun from his coat and pointed it at Luis. Luis’ first reaction was to reach for his own gun but Bentley stopped him, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” He said chastising Luis as he waved the gun in his face. “Give me your gun.” Bentley said, his tone making the statement sound like a demand rather than a request. Luis reluctantly handed over his gun, cursing himself for allowing Bentley to put him in this position.

After getting Luis’ gun Bentley continued, “I never visited Harmony that much, small towns just don’t do it for me you know? But whenever I did, someone would always be talking about Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald. It was like some revered, godforsaken name! I mean whether it was the chief of police, or that lady from the café, even the Cranes! God, I was thinking ‘who the hell is this guy’?! Then I saw your picture hidden in Sheridan’s things and I found out, you were her fiancé! But by then I didn’t care, you were gone or dead or something, and I married her. So that brings me to my question,” Bentley said as he stopped to aim the gun right at Luis’ head, “Just what the hell are you doing here Luis?” Bentley asked.

Luis looked down the barrel of the gun and decided to play the only hand he had, “I’m just doing a job,” He said as his eyes shifted from the gun to Bentley himself, “You were right when you said Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald was gone. He is dead. I’m Juan Diaz now; I left Luis and everything about him years ago. I’m a different person.” He said convincingly. Bentley cocked his head to the side, the gun never leaving Luis, “Really? Somehow, I’m not so sure. I doubt someone can change their character, the way they are, so easily. I mean going from such an upstanding guy to a low level crook? I just don’t buy it.” Bentley replied.

“Some roads aren’t meant to be traveled twice,” Luis insisted, “After spending your life meeting other peoples demands only to find it’s not enough? Following every rule, doing everything right in order to be something, only to find out that there will always be people to step on you? I may have not been able to control why I left Harmony, but it was a blessing. Coming to New York and finding Deck and the rest of the gang was the best for me. As for Sheridan, I didn’t even know that it was her we were kidnapping! Whatever feelings I had died a long time ago, the only thing I care about now is the cut of the ransom I’m suppose to be getting.” Luis said emphatically.

“Is that so?” Bentley asked sounding convinced. Luis nodded. “Well then, we should get going. We have to meet up with the rest of the gang.” Bentley said although his gun was still pointed at Luis. “I took a cab, so you’ll have to drive. Where are your keys?” He asked. “In my pocket.” Luis said his hands in the air. “Get them.” Bentley said using the gun to point. Slowly Luis put his hand in his pocket to grab the keys, as he did so, he felt for his cell phone and pressed 2 send, to dial Glenson’s number.

Aterwards he held his hands up to show Bentley the keys. “Okay, now lead me to your car. No funny business or I’ll shoot you on the spot.” Bentley warned. Luis nodded and headed down to his car with Bentley following closely behind. As he neared the driver’s side, he felt the butt of the gun hit him and then everything went black. ----------------------

As Luis woke up, he groaned. He forced his eyes open, trying to be as alert as possible despite the throbbing pain he still felt in the back of his head. He found himself face down on the cement floor. As he sat up, he gingerly touched the back of his head with his fingertips and winced. “Still hurts does it?” Luis turned to the direction of the voice and squinted through the dim light, it was Deck. Luis stood up somewhat unsteadily to face Deck, Bentley and all the others only to find himself surrounded. ‘This is not good’ Luis thought to himself.

“What’s going on?” Luis asked, looking at the men around him. As he did so, he also took the time to survey his surroundings. He noted that he was in some sort of rundown warehouse, still full of old machinery. Deck answered, “Mr. Bentley here told us everything about you Juan, or should I say Luis?” Luis fought to stay calm as he responded, “Then Mr. Bentley should have told you all that it’s all in the past. It has no consequence to what’s happening now.” Luis said his voice unwavering. “Luis, Luis” Deck said disappointedly at him, “you of all people should know every action has a consequence. Especially something like being engaged to the hostage!” Deck yelled out. “I already told Bentley my loyalties lie with you, and the gang. I don’t care what happens to her.” Luis said firmly.

“I want to believe you, I really do. But you know me, I only believe what I see.” Deck said forebodingly. Luis stayed silent waiting for Deck to make the next move. “We’re going to see exactly where your loyalties, as you say, lie. Mr. Bentley, if you please?” Deck said motioning to a certain piece of machinery. Luis watched in horror as Bentley moved to the machine and from behind it grabbed Sheridan who was blindfolded and gagged with her hands and feet bound. Bentley half carried and dragged Sheridan a few yards in front of Luis. Luis followed them with his eyes while also realizing that Joe and Moss now flanked him on his right while Deck and Lee were on his left.

Now it was Bentley’s turn to talk again and Luis could tell he was enjoying making him suffer. “This is where it gets interesting. You say you don’t care about her, so prove it.” Bentley said mocking him. Luis felt someone nudge him and found Lee at his side, a gun in his hand. He handed Luis the gun and moved off to the side again. “It’s your choice Luis, shoot Sheridan and prove your loyalty or don’t and be killed yourself.” Bentley said making it all sound so easy. Luis looked down at the gun as if it was a foreign object; it felt like a hundred pound weight in his hands, Luis knew he couldn’t shoot Sheridan!

“Oh, c’mon Luis! It shouldn’t be this hard, you said it yourself, you don’t care about her! Look, I’ll even make it easier for you.” Bentley said as if he was doing Luis a favor. As he held Sheridan with one arm, he used the other to pull down her blindfold. As Sheridan squinted against the shadows, her eyes met Luis’. Luis watched painfully as her eyes widened in recognition and disbelief. Bentley also watched Sheridan’s reaction and scornfully held her closer to him, he bent down so his mouth was level with her ear,

“You recognize him don’t you Sheridan? Of course you do. You thought he was dead but guess what? He’s been living in New York all this time. Now he has a choice to make, you heard me earlier, his life or yours. Which one do you think he’s going to pick?” Bentley said menacingly. As Bentley said this Luis’ eyes never left Sheridan’s and he saw her eyes pleading with him. Luis tore his eyes away from Sheridan’s simply because he could not look at her in so much agony. ‘What am I going to do?” Luis questioned himself.

Luis looked back up to meet the gazes of both Sheridan and Bentley. It was then, as Luis stood there staring, with both his and Sheridan’s life in his hands, that he realized what he had to do. Luis broke the gaze he was holding and looked back down to the gun in his hand. Everything seemed to be magnified a hundred times as he took the safety off the gun. Every click and noise Luis made as he handled the gun echoed in his mind. When he looked back up, his face no longer showed the torn uncertainty he felt just moments before.

Instead, it was replaced with an unemotional look of finality. As he looked on, he raised his arm holding the gun with a steady hand. His gaze shifted from Bentley to Sheridan, his eyes meeting hers, with a terrifyingly calm voice he apologized to her, “I’m sorry.” Her eyes grew wide with fear as she realized what he meant. She shook her head, unable to understand Luis’ actions, and struggled uselessly against Bentley. Her muffled scream was the only thing Luis heard as he squeezed the trigger.

Chapter 9A:

Sheridan looked on terrified. Her mind was in chaos and found it hard to believe what her eyes were seeing. What was Luis doing here – alive?! She looked on helplessly as Luis stood in front of her with the gun in his hand. She had heard what Bentley was proposing and she knew her life was in Luis’ hands. But no matter how scared she was, she trusted Luis and knew he would find a way to save them both.

She watched as Luis’ gaze shifted from the gun to Bentley and then to her. She noticed the change in him and watched as he raised the gun toward her and Bentley. His eyes finally settled on her, “I’m sorry” she heard him say as he began to squeeze the trigger. Sheridan lost the last of her composure, ‘what was Luis doing?!’ she wondered frantically to herself. Sheridan heard the loud gunshot from the gun and clenched her eyes shut waiting for the impact of the bullet. However it never came, instead she heard Bentley groan and loosen the hold he had on her.

As everyone stood around confused Bentley fell back clutching a wound on his side. From the corner of her eye Sheridan saw Luis rushing toward her and before she knew what was happening she was being carried over his shoulder. By now all hell had broken loose as both sides were trading gunshots. As Luis ran for cover Sheridan closed her eyes again, praying that neither she nor Luis would be hit.

They were about to take refuge from a piece of machinery when Luis felt a bullet hit him in the back. He winced in pain as he stumbled briefly before running the rest of the way. He collapsed behind the machine bringing Sheridan down with him. Luis heard Sheridan mumble through the gag anxiously, immediately trying to get by his side. Luis held a hand up to stop her, “I’m fine, I’m fine. I have a bullet proof vest on,” he said breathlessly. “It still just hurts hell though.”

He said just as another bullet ricocheted off the machine, causing them both to duck their heads. In response, Luis carefully peered around the machine and fired back. “Where the hell is Glenson? He should have traced the phone call already!” Luis muttered angrily. As he was saying so, the sound of police sirens could be heard coming towards them. He breathed a sigh of relief and turned to Sheridan “It’s going to be ok.” He said as he heard Deck and the others yelling amongst themselves before making a hasty exit.

After making sure they were safe, Luis crawled to Sheridan and untied her hands. As he untied her feet, Sheridan took off the gag in her mouth and then immediately wrapped her arms around him. She breathed in deeply and buried her head into the crook of his neck. Luis was surprised by her actions but slowly circled his arms around her. He savored the feeling of her in his arms and closed his eyes, “it’s ok Sheridan.” He whispered soothingly, “It’s done. No one is going to hurt you.”

As they sat there holding each other Luis heard footsteps approaching them. He let Sheridan go and whirled around with the gun in his hand, just as Glenson stepped around the corner. Glenson immediately threw his hands in the air in front of him, “Whoa! It’s me, it’s me!” He said frantically. Luis let out the breath he was holding and lowered the gun. “God Glenson! You scared the hell outta me!” Luis said.

Glenson shrugged his shoulders apologetically, “Sorry man, just don’t get trigger happy on me!” He replied as he looked around Luis to see Sheridan, still sitting on the ground looking up at them. He adjusted the tone of his voice, “Mrs. Crane.” He acknowledged nodding at her, “I’m Detective Glenson. Are you all right?” He said introducing himself as Luis helped her up. Sheridan nodded her head weakly, “I – I’m fine. I’m just glad it’s over.” She said as she glanced toward Luis.

As Sheridan and Glenson were talking, Luis looked around and noticed quite a number of police officers now milling around the crime scene. He glanced to where Bentley lay, just in time to see him be tended to by paramedics before being carted off to the hospital. “He’s going to live.” Glenson said behind him. Luis turned around to face Glenson. “I know. When I shot him I made sure he would live so we could find out why he would do this.”

Luis said his voice void of any emotion. Another police officer had joined them and was ineffectively trying to persuade Sheridan to get checked out in the hospital. Luis shook his head, after all this she was just as stubborn as ever. Luis broke into their conversation, “He’s right Sheridan, you should go to the hospital.” He said sensibly. “I told you I’m fine. I don’t need to go to the hospital I just need some rest that’s all.” Sheridan said staring at him stubbornly. “Sheridan don’t be–“ He began before he was cutoff, “don’t be what?” Sheridan replied back.

“All right that’s enough!” Glenson interceded before the two could argue more. “Mrs. Crane I’m sorry if you don’t want to, but you will go to the hospital to be checked out. That’s the end of discussion.” Glenson huffed looking at Sheridan and then Luis. “When did you start acting like a child?” He asked disbelievingly. Luis rubbed the back of his neck wearily, “Sorry.” He mumbled.

As Sheridan was being lead to another waiting ambulance, she stopped and looked expectantly at Luis, “Are you coming with me Luis?” She asked softly. Luis looked back to Glenson “Do you need me here?” He asked. Glenson shook his head before adding, “You go on ahead, and I’ll stop by the hospital after everything here is under control.” Luis gave him a grateful smile, “thanks.” He replied as he rushed to be by Sheridan’s side.

Chapter 9B:

At the hospital, Luis had changed into some clean clothes and sat uncomfortably in the waiting room. Glenson walked in, causing Luis to look up. “Hey! How’s our hero doing?” Glenson said as he grinned at Luis. Luis just chuckled and replied, “If that’s what heroes have to do everyday then count me out. Other than that I’m doing fine.” He said. Glenson laughed in response as he sat in a chair facing Luis.

“Well you did a good job buddy. John Bentley and the rest of his gang should be in jail for a looong time thanks to you.” Glenson replied. “You were able to catch Deck and the others?” Luis asked. Glenson nodded, “They tried to escape but we got to them before they even made it past the block.” “And Bentley, what did he say in his statement? Did he say why he did this?” Luis asked anxiously. Glenson leaned back in the chair, “Actually he did. We managed to convince him that he shouldn’t even bother to lie because between Sheridan’s testimony and your report he was going to be indicted.

With all the evidence against him, he had no choice but to confess to everything. It’s a pretty screwed up tale to say the least.” Glenson said. Luis’ eyebrows shot up, “that good huh?” Glenson shook his head in astonishment, “Oh yeah. You up for a little story?” he asked. Luis nodded and leaned forward, allowing Bentley to continue. “Well, it turns out the whole thing started a few years back, when Alistair Crane had just returned to Harmony. What he didn’t know was that the FBI followed him there as well.

Apparently, Alistair had a lot of shady business deals in his resume. Well anyway, Alistair wanted to marry his daughter, Sheridan, off to his protégé, John Bentley. In hindsight we know that they got married but, what should have been a match made in corporate heaven had a few problems.” Glenson paused allowing Luis to cut in, “Sheridan didn’t want to marry Bentley.”

He said. But to Luis’ astonishment Glenson shook his head, “No, the problem was her brother, Julian Crane. He didn’t like the close relationship Alistair had with Bentley.” Glenson shrugged, “maybe he was even jealous. Anyhow, he didn’t trust Bentley and didn’t want him anywhere near the Crane fortune or his sister. So, he didn’t approve of the marriage. Well, around this time Alistair found out the FBI was closing in on him. Alistair thought Julian defying him about the marriage was the ultimate betrayal so when the FBI came knocking, Alistair let Julian take the fall.

Fast forward a few years to when Julian is released from prison, thanks to the Crane lawyers of course. He comes out a new man and washes his hands of anything that could send him back to jail. When Alistair died –“ Luis couldn’t help but interrupt Glenson, “Wait a minute Alistair Crane is dead?!” He asked disbelievingly.

Glenson looked up at him questioningly, “Yeah, almost a year now. Anyway, when Alistair died all the Crane fortune went to Julian. Bentley is left out in the cold and in debt from all the bad business deals he got himself into. He asks Julian for help but of course, Julian refuses. Bentley knew that Julian had a very close and protective relationship with Sheridan ever since the disappearance of her first fiancé so Bentley decides to hit him were it hurts – his sister. Knowing this, he comes up with a demented plan to kidnap his own wife, and everything else is history.” Glenson said finishing.

All Luis could do was sit with his mouth open. A lot had definitely changed from the time he left Harmony. As he sat there, thinking of everything that he just found out, Glenson was observing him with a careful eye. After a few moments Glenson broke the silence, “So were is Mrs. Crane anyway?” He asked glancing around. Luis came out of his trance, “Oh, uh, after her checkup Mason was going to get her statement and make sure all the police end of things are taken care of.” He replied. Glenson nodded, “Good, good.”

After another brief moment of silence Glenson looked at Luis, “So are you going to tell me what’s going on with the two of you or what?” He asked with a raised brow. Luis shifted uneasily in his seat, “Going on with who? What are you talking about?” Luis asked pretending not to know what Glenson was alluding to. However Glenson didn’t back down, “With you and Sheridan Crane. And don’t tell me nothing because I know its something. You two know each other huh?” Glenson said. Luis eyed the ground and nodded before looking up, “yeah, how’d you know?” Luis asked.

Glenson answered, “The fact that she knew your name and that she insisted you come with her to the hospital were just a few clues.” Glenson said with a wry smile. “And I’ve also seen the way the two of you look at each other. You don’t look at a stranger in that way.” Glenson added. Luis ran a hand through his hair and sighed, “I was her fiancé.” He said quietly.

Glenson sat dumbfounded, “Her fiancé?” He asked shocked. “Yeah, I was.” Luis said guiltily, “I’m sorry I never said anything before. I know I should’ve. I should’ve told you everything from the moment we knew the hostage was Sheridan. It’s just -” Luis paused, finding it hard to find the right words, “There’s a lot of things in my past, unresolved issues, that have a hard time opening up about.” Luis said looking down at his hands.

Glenson looked at Luis and remembered the times Luis seemed so miserable during the case. He often wondered why but now he knew. It was because he was witnessing someone he once loved, or still loved, go through some unimaginable things. He nodded understandingly, “You did what you felt was right, I can’t fault you on that.” He said. Luis looked up at him appreciatively, “thanks, for understanding.”

Luis watched as Glenson’s eyes shifted from his to something behind him. Glenson cleared his throat and stood up, “Mrs. Crane,” He said acknowledging Sheridan, “I’m glad to see that you’re alright.” He said. “Thank you Detective.” Sheridan replied greeting him warmly. Slowly Luis stood to face her, an awkward silence filling the air as they faced each other. Glenson eyed them both and sensed that the two had a lot to talk about. He broke the silence, “Well since your done here Mrs. Crane, I thought that Luis could escort you to the hotel you’ll be staying at until your brother picks you up tomorrow.” Glenson said. He looked at Luis, “You’ll do that, won’t you Luis?” He asked. Luis finally broke the gaze he was holding with Sheridan, “Yeah, sure.” Luis answered.

Silence engulfed the car. Both of them were unsure of what to do or say. Sheridan was looking at Luis studying him. He looked as handsome as she remembered, maybe even more so. “I can’t believe you alive! Everyone thought you were dead!” Sheridan said disbelievingly. Luis quickly glanced at her, “Well I’m not, you can see that.” Luis said quietly. “I know it’s just so hard to believe! I’m afraid that if I close my eyes you might disappear again.” She paused her eyes now focused on her hands in her lap, “why did you leave?

What would make you leave your family, your home,” she looked up at him, “me?” She asked the hurt obvious in her voice. Luis tightened his grip on the steering wheel, his eyes focused on the road ahead of him. “Your Father.” He said simply and coldly. After that, the rest of the ride was filled with silence once again.

Chapter 10:

Sheridan looked around the surprisingly luxurious hotel room. After spending weeks trapped in a small room with only the essentials, all the lavish accessories seemed so trivial. She was lost in her own thoughts when Luis’ voice suddenly brought her out of her daze. “If you need anything just call for room service. Don’t worry about anything it’s all covered for.” He said as he shifted uncomfortably in his spot.

As he said this, Sheridan processed the night’s events in her head; here standing in front of her was the man of her dreams, literally. The man she had been dreaming about for the past four years and here they were acting like total strangers! It was driving her crazy! Luis seemed so distant that she wondered if he still felt the same way about her. She broke the tense silence, “Luis I ju-“ Her voice faltered when his eyes locked onto hers. “I just want to thank you for saving me, again.” She said gratefully. “You already thanked me Sheridan.” Luis said looking deeply into her eyes. It took all of his strength and will power but he managed to keep himself from reaching out and holding her. ‘If things weren’t so complicated’ Luis thought to himself, but they were.

“You’re probably exhausted, so I should give you a chance to rest.” Luis said breaking their gaze. When Sheridan didn’t respond, Luis nodded and made a move to leave. “Luis, wait!” Sheridan said as she reached out to grab a hold of his arm. As she did so, her foot caught a fold in the rug, causing her to fall forward.

Before she could fall, Luis caught her. For a breathless moment they stared into each other’s eyes. Luis felt Sheridan tremble in his arms as he held her and he wondered if she could feel the pace of his heart quicken. Blushing, Sheridan looked down to his chest before looking deeply into Luis’ eyes once again. Luis was entranced and he felt powerless as he leaned closer. When Sheridan saw this, her eyes fluttered shut as Luis’ lips captured her own.

Feeling the firm pressure of Luis’ lips on hers made Sheridan forget about everything around her. Her hands slid up to hold his face as she savored the feel of him. His lips parted hers and her tummy tightened as his tongue tangled with hers. Wanting her closer, Luis drew her up into his arms and leaned her back on the wall. Soon her lips were not enough and he began kissing her neck. As he arrived at her shoulders, his hands worked their way under her shirt caressing her back and stomach.

For Sheridan the feel of Luis’ hands on her bare skin was almost too much and she moaned in pleasure. As his hands continued their exploration of her body, Sheridan dealt with his coat, making easy work of it as she threw it on the floor. She then began her work on his shirt. Kissing his lips, his face, his neck, she tugged at it, desperate to get it off him. After some work she finally succeeded and Luis’ shirt joined his jacket on the floor.

However, as fast and intense as everything was going it was the feel of Sheridan's lips on his chest that startled Luis back to his senses. What was he doing!? He was out of control! Feeling Luis pull away from her, Sheridan kept pressing forward, kissing his chest and neck. Gently grasping her arms, Luis pushed her back from him. “We can’t do this.” He said breathlessly.

Sheridan stared back at Luis, a confused _expression painting her features. Her breathing was as labored as his, her lips were swollen, and her shirt was tangled and creased creating a seducing view of her cleavage. Luis glanced down and had to force his eyes to look back at her face. "Sheridan," he began. Closing his eyes, he took a few deep breaths to calm himself down. Literally shaking from all the emotions he was feeling he looked at the woman standing before him and whispered again, "We can’t do this.”

Sheridan shook her head, “Why not Luis? We both want to and it just feels right, doesn’t it?!” Sheridan asked frustrated. Luis stepped back, putting some distance between them. “Just because it feels right it doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.” He replied with his gaze focused on the ground. “What’s that suppose to mean?” Sheridan asked discouraged. “It’s complicated.” Luis said turning away from Sheridan. As she watched him turn away from her, Sheridan hugged herself, trying to ward away the sudden feeling of uncertainty washing over her. “When was it ever easy?” She replied.

Luis took a deep breath as he rubbed his temples, he didn’t want to have this talk with Sheridan. How could he ever explain that too much had happened and too much had changed for them to just pick up where they had left off? How could he tell her how much she hurt him when she got married, how at times he loved her so much that he hated himself for it? He couldn’t, and yet he wished he could.

Fighting hard to keep his emotions and feelings in check he turned around to face her again, “ What happened to us Sheridan?!” He said to her, “I told you that I’d always be there for you, that I’d always come for you. I thought we had a connection and that you’d know I wasn’t dead. You’d know and you’d wait for me.” He said looking at her. “I did.” Sheridan said softly as she took a step closer to him. Luis watched with cool eyes, “For what? The three months you weren’t married?” He said, his voice filled with sarcasm. Sheridan looked back helplessly, “That isn’t fair Luis.” She said trying to make him understand.

“Don’t you see? We’re in different places now. You started a life that I know nothing about and that I’m not apart of!” He said emphatically, but Sheridan didn’t back down, “so have you.” She said reminding him. “Well, I didn’t have a choice!” Luis said scornfully. Now it was Sheridan’s turn to try to keep her temper in check. “And you think I did?!” Sheridan said disbelievingly. “Oh, so you were forced to marry Bentley.” Luis said mockingly. Frustrated, Sheridan sighed before answering, “No, I wasn’t.” She winced inwardly knowing how it sounded and how Luis was going to take it the wrong way, “-but I didn’t have a choice.” She added again.

Luis scoffed, “Now what’s that suppose to mean Sheridan? Not only did marry someone else, but Bentley?! You have to help me out here because I’m having a hard time figuring out-“ “Because I knew my Father wouldn’t have let me keep our baby!” Sheridan yelled out interrupting Luis’ rant. Luis stopped in mid sentence and Sheridan’s words hung in the silence. Luis felt rooted to his spot as he stared gaping at Sheridan. “Our baby?” Luis said half to himself and half to Sheridan. Sheridan glanced hesitantly in Luis’ direction but didn’t answer. Instead, she gave a shaky sigh and sat down on the couch, leaning forward with her head in her hands.

Chapter 11:

“Sheridan?” Luis said aloud, hoping that hearing her name would prompt her to say something more. The rush of the emotion filled argument between Sheridan and he just moments before had been stopped dead in it tracks by the words “our baby”. Luis stood in the middle of the room fighting the urge to grab something to support himself, his feelings of disbelief and unbelievable happiness threatening to overwhelm him. Slowly he took a deep breath in an effort to center himself as made his way toward Sheridan.

Kneeling on the ground in front of Sheridan instead of sitting down beside her, he softly called out her name again, “Sheridan.” After a few more moments of silence, Sheridan’s tear streaked face looked up to meet Luis’ gaze. They stared at each other for a moment almost as if both were afraid of what would happen next. Then hesitantly Sheridan lifted her hand to gently cup Luis’ face. The simple yet intimate gesture of Sheridan’s soft caress made Luis involuntarily close his eyes and savour her touch.

Luis opened his eyes only to find Sheridan studying him closely. With her hand still gently cupping his face, she shifted closer to the edge of the sofa. Breathing in before she finally spoke, her voice full of sincerity, she said softly, “Don’t think I didn’t go through any pain Luis. God, I thought I died the day they told me you disappeared.” Another tear fell from her eyes as she broke the gaze they were holding. Luis’ heart broke upon hearing those words come out of her mouth. He wiped the tear from her cheek and gently took her hands into his. Sheridan looked up and was surprised to see the love that shone in his eyes. He opened his mouth to say something in return but Sheridan quickly covered his lips with a finger. Luis looked at her confused but Sheridan answered his questioned gaze by saying, “You need to know what happened while you were gone and why I did what I did.” Luis nodded silently knowing that Sheridan needed to get out what she had been holding in for so long.

“When Father told me you were dead I didn’t believe him. I mean, I just couldn’t believe in my heart that you were gone. It just –“ Sheridan paused to look Luis in the eye. “It just didn’t feel right. But as the days and weeks went by and the police turned up nothing all I had left was my hope and faith that you’d come back. My Father introduced me to John about a month and half after you ‘disappeared’. I was really distraught and I couldn’t have cared less but as hard it is to believe, he was there for me and he comforted me.” Sheridan paused again before continuing in a cynical voice, “Thinking back on it now, he was probably just thinking about my bank account. Any way a while later, I got sick and I had to go to the hospital. While I was there I found out I was pregnant. I panicked, I knew right away it was yours but I knew my Father would have been furious and would have ordered me to get rid of our baby. I knew it was wrong but the only way I could think of saving our baby was to start up the relationship with John that my Father wanted.”

Sheridan finished, her explanation of what had happened the past four years suddenly sounding so thin and flimsy to her own ears. Abruptly she stood up and walked to the window. As she glanced outside looking into the darkness, she hugged herself. She felt Luis’ touch on her shoulder but did not turn around. “What’s wrong?” Luis said not making any effort to hide the concern that tainted his voice. “It just sounds so trivial now.” Sheridan said, her voice sounding hollow in her own ears. “I could have – I should have done something more. I should have just told my Father the truth. I should have stood up to him.” Sheridan turned around to face Luis, “if I did, we wouldn’t have to deal with this.” She said as she motioned to the two of them.

Perhaps feeling the weight of her whole ordeal for the first time Sheridan brought a hand up to her temple, “If I had just –“ but before she could go on further Luis put both his hands on her arms. “Sheridan look at me.” When she didn’t meet his gaze he told her again, “Look at me.” When she did, Luis brought a hand to hold her face, “Don’t blame yourself for what happened in the past. You did what you thought was the best, for you and for our baby. Don’t think that your decision caused us to end up like this. I don’t blame you for anything, all right? I’m the one who walked away first remember? If anything I’m the one who should have stood up to him.” Luis said regretfully looking at her. Sheridan answered by replying “You did what you thought was best.” Luis gave her a sad smile and reached down to take both her hands in his, “I guess we both did things thinking what was best for others.” Sheridan nodded before briefly breaking their gaze to look down at their pair of interlocking hands. “Her name is Natalie,” She said looking back at him, “Our baby. You have a daughter Luis.”

Luis breathed in deeply, letting the depth of Sheridan’s words settle within him. He was a father! A smile broke out on his face and perhaps for the first time since he left home – since he left Sheridan, it was genuine and he felt alive again. “I’m a dad,” Luis said disbelievingly before adding, “we’re parents!” He threw his hands around her and engulfed her in a hug. Sheridan laughed as she returned his hug and held him tight. “Yes, we are.” She said, unable to keep the smile off her face as well as unsuccessfully trying to hold back the fresh tears that formed in her eyes – although this time they were tears of joy.

Still within their embrace Luis looked at Sheridan excitedly and said, “tell me about her.” Sheridan laughed at his eagerness, causing Luis’ smile to widen even more, god how he loved to hear her laugh. “Well, she’s three years old and she has your eyes.” Sheridan paused, a wistful look overcoming her face, “You know, at the times when I thought I just couldn’t bear to go on without you, I would just look into her eyes and it just comforted me. It was like, even though she hadn’t met you, a part of you lived inside of her and it made things alright.”

Luis heart swelled as his throat constricted with all the emotions that flowed through him, his voice was barely a whisper when he spoke, “I can’t wait to meet her.” Sheridan smiled warmly before a sudden flash of remembrance crossed her face. “Your family knows that Natalie is yours. Pilar, Theresa, and Miguel, they’re the only one’s who know. I felt they were the only people I could trust with the news.” Sheridan’s eyes lit up brightly as she continued explaining, “You should see them with her Luis! They’re so wonderful! Pilar is an amazing grandmother and Miguel, he’s so careful and sweet with her! And Theresa makes these adorable outfits for her to wear! They’re spoiling her but she loves it and she loves all of them.”

Luis listened as Sheridan spoke, he felt so proud that his family was there to support Sheridan when he wasn’t but Luis realized how much he already missed by being away all these years. A look of sadness clouded his eyes, which caused Sheridan to stop, “what’s wrong Luis?” she asked softly. Luis shook his head to clear the thoughts from his mind, he looked at Sheridan and upon seeing the concerned look on her face smiled, “nothing,” he said reassuring her. “It’s just that it seems that I’ve already missed so much.” He couldn’t hide the disappointment in his voice.

Taking a step closer to him Sheridan placed herself in his arms. “You said it yourself, you can’t help what happened in the past. But I know your going to make a great dad Luis and Natalie is going to love very much.” Sheridan lifted her head off his chest to look him, a crooked smile playing on his lips, “You know all that?” He asked softly, sounding impressed. Sheridan smiled and replied, “mmhmm.” Luis laughed deeply, holding her tightly again.

He pulled away, brushing a stray bang off her face as he looked at her closely, “I love you.” He said simply. Sheridan closed her eyes and sighed deeply, “I remember the times I’d dream and wish for a chance to hear you say that to me again.” She said tenderly. She brought a hand up to his face and she let her fingertips trace an imaginary path across his brow, down his cheek to his lips. “I love you too,” She whispered her lips inches away from Luis.

Their lips met in a kiss that made Sheridan feel an intense sense of longing and passion. Holding Luis even closer, she felt a heat and a need rise within her so intense, that she trembled with it. Luis slowly slid his hands through her hair before surrounding her in the warm, strong circle of his arms again. Sheridan felt the heavy beat of his heart and the urgent evidence of his need pressed against her. Her own need surged inside her, filling her up with dizzying emotions. She held him closer and reveled in the feeling of them kissing and touching each other. As Luis’ tongue tangled with hers something inside her broke free and she arched against him.

Luis felt the sharp and potent jolt of desire flow through him as Sheridan arched against him, and he sucked in a disbelieving breath. This was how he remembered Sheridan — so instantaneously responsive to everything he did to her. He breathed in her scent deeply and moved his lips to the hollow of her neck. Sheridan couldn’t stop the moan that escaped her lips as Luis’ lips continued their havoc on her neck and shoulders.

Heat roared through her. She loved the taste of him, and how he touched her knowing exactly what would take her breath away and make her heart pound. She let herself get lost in the feeling of the moment, of what it was like to be in love again.

The motions they went through as they undressed each other were wild yet somehow orchestrated, the need that both of them felt just leading them together. Sheridan felt herself being lifted up into his arms and became vaguely aware that they had somehow made it into the bedroom of the suite.

They fumbled in the darkness of the room, which was only illuminated with a soft glow from the lights outside and the open doorway. Luis lay her down gently on the bed not breaking the kiss they had been sharing. Luis’ lips finally left hers only to trail their way down her body. Sheridan’s heavy and unsteady breaths only encouraging him more but before he could continue further Sheridan reached desperately for him.

Luis reached her lips again this time letting his arm brace less of his body weight, causing him to lie fully upon Sheridan. An involuntary gasp escaped her lips as she felt his whole body upon her and she arched against him.

When Luis entered her, Sheridan was unprepared for the sensation of completeness, of this being and feeling so right. She felt his pace quicken and his gasps more uneven and as her thoughts went out of control so did her body, because the fiercest, most intense orgasm had her shaking in his arms just before she heard his own soft, disbelieving sigh.

Sheridan held on to Luis and he kissed her lovingly on the forehead. A part of her still felt like it wasn’t possible that Luis was really here with her, but he was and Sheridan loved how he made her feel, both in her body and in her heart. Perhaps that’s what she missed about him the most, he made her feel special and truly loved. That was actually nothing new, but now after all they had been through it was so much more powerful.

"I can’t move," Luis said quietly, some minutes later, a soft smile plastering his handsome face. Sheridan giggled softly and tightened her arms around his back. "Then don’t." She said as she snuggled closer to him. Luis shifted to his side, rolled her onto hers and drew her against him, fitting himself against the curve of her back, his arm around her waist. Then he wrapped them both in a cocoon of the blanket. Sheridan sighed happily; ‘it was always this good with this man’ she thought to herself. She lifted her lips to his ear. "I love you," she whispered softly. Luis responded by kissing her sweetly on the cheek before whispering. “I love you too.” Sheridan sighed again and fell asleep in his arms.
