CHAPTER 21: JOHNNY'S DILEMMA
Clark stepped outside of the house. There was Mxyzptlk. The imp saw Clark glaring at him and heading straight toward him.
"Don't blame me," he said. "You're the one who screwed up in there."
"What are you talking about? You told me Johnny would pick me! And instead he picked Little Jo!"
"You couldn't keep your mouth shut, could you? You had to say something before Johnny could answer the question. So you blew it."
"What? All I said was, 'Just say what comes first to your mind, Johnny,' and the next thing I knew, he picked Little Jo!"
"You're an idiot, you know that?"
"And you're not making any sense!"
"Do I have to spell it out for you?"
|
"What are you talking about? Spell out what for me?"
"It's not WHAT you said in there. It's the way you said it."
Clark stared at the imp blankly.
"I give up," said Mxyzptlk. "You're hopeless. I'm out of here."
"Wait!"
But Mxyzptlk vanished.
Damn, thought Clark. What did Mxyzptlk mean by that? What was wrong with the way I said what I said to Johnny?
Meanwhile inside the house Johnny slowly finished eating his breakfast as Little Jo happily contemplated all the kissing, hugging and buggering he wanted to do with the red-haired pretty boy gunslinger.

Johnny felt very confused. He was going to say, "Sorry, fellas, but I pick Clark." But when Johnny heard Clark say, "Just say what comes first to your mind, Johnny," in that very nonchalant manner, it instantly reminded him of that very same nonchalant manner Clark had used when he told Johnny that the night they shared didn't mean anything. Johnny had felt a rush of emotional pain and humiliation.
But it was only a dream, thought Johnny. Or was it? It seemed so real. So crystal clear. It felt like I'd really been there in the future and stayed with Clark in his apartment.
I'm an idiot, thought Johnny. It was only a stupid dream. How can I tell Little Jo I made a mistake? He looks so happy. I don't want to hurt him. He'll be crushed. But I can't live a lie! I want Clark! What have I done?
