CHAPTER 2: THE BREAKUP
"Thanks, Superman," said Lois. "I'll type this story and turn it in
to Perry. Maybe tonight over dinner we can figure out what caused
that kryptonite to change from green to pink and what effect, if any,
it has on you."
"Oh, right. About dinner," said Superman. He looked
uncomfortable. "Uh, Lois, there's no easy way to say this, so I'll
just be blunt. I think we should see other people, so I'm canceling
our plans for dinner tonight."
Lois was stunned. Her mouth fell open and she stared at him.
"Excuse me? Did I hear you correctly? You're breaking up with me?"
"Yes, Lois. I don't think it would be fair to lead you on when I know
in my heart that this would not be heading toward what I think you
want our relationship to be."
Lois glared at him. "Fine! Well, don't expect me to cry any tears
over you! Now if you'll excuse me, I have a story to write!"
She turned and walked away from him as she did her best not to cry.
She walked at a normal pace and resisted the urge to break into a run
toward the women's restroom.

Superman felt like a heel. He looked around the room and spotted
Jimmy Olsen leaving Perry White's office. Jimmy smiled and waved at
Superman.
"Jimmy, do you have plans for dinner tonight? There's something I'd
like to discuss with you."
"Sure, Superman. I'll meet you here at five o'clock when I get off
work."
"Great. See you then."
