1988: Spaulding Enterprises 100th Anniversary One day I’ll write the entirety of the takeover night, Spaulding Enterprises’ 100th Anniversary party, in one big script. Here’s one section with Alex and Phillip…. Alexandra is currently involved with H.B. Lewis. Part of the deal to overthrow Alan from the company was, supposedly, to merge Spaulding Enterprises with Lewis Oil. However, Phillip, once he succeeded in being elected Spaulding president, had no intention of merging the two companies. After his egotistical “state of the company” speech (in which no merger was mentioned), Alex and H.B. were peeved. H.B. wasn’t convinced that Alex was not involved, and the two of them were leaving the party to talk when a tipsy Phillip stops them… H.B. Alex, let’s get out of here. Alex Yes, I want to go home. Phillip Where are you all going? H.B. Home. We have things to discuss. Phillip Well, you don’t have to go home right now. H.B. Yes, we do. Phillip H.B., the party’s just starting. I’m going to go get you a drink. Alex (peeved) We don’t want a drink, Phillip. Phillip Why not? This is a celebration. I don’t….what’s, what’s going on here? We won! We won. Dad is on the skids. Alex I won’t drink to that. Phillip Well, I can’t think of any reason why not. It’s the best news I’ve heard in a long time. Alex Alan’s my brother. I love him very much. I agree he should have been removed from office, but I don’t get any personal pleasure from seeing him suffer. H.B. I am going to wait for you in the car. Good night, Phillip. Phillip Good night, H.B. (H. B. leaves. To Alex.) I don’t understand why everybody looks so glum. Aunt Alex, we DID it. Alex We? Phillip Yes, we. What did you think? I did this all by myself? Alex That’s how it sounded…when you made your speech. You never once used the word “we.” It was “I” this, “me” that. Phillip Well, I was very excited. I didn’t think that…uh… Alex Yes, obviously not. Phillip (sheepish pause) I’m sorry. Alex Answer me one question. Did you ever really intend for the merger with Lewis Oil to go through? Phillip Absolutely, I do. Absolutely I intend to see it through. Alex When? Phillip As soon as all this has died down. Alex Oh, well isn’t that convenient. For you. Phillip What do I have to do to convince you? Alex I’ll let you know. Phillip All right. Let’s forget about that. (Proud of himself). Was I brilliant tonight or what? Alex I’ll let you know about THAT too. (She walks away. Phillip shakes his head once and sarcastically says…) Phillip Well! BREAK (A grinning Phillip and an equally amused Ross sit down at a table while the waiters are cleaning up after the big party.) Phillip Did I stick it to him or what? (Both laugh). Ross Yes, I consider Alan to be properly stuck. Phillip Do you realize, as we sit here, that this is the first times in our lives that he is out of the picture for good? Ross Well, I don’t think he’s out of the picture for good, Phillip. He’s bounced back from worse than this, you know. Phillip Oh no, he hasn’t. Ross Oh, come on. In San Rios he came back from the grave. Phillip Ross, in San Rios, he had his money. (Grins) He doesn’t have any money anymore. Remember those emerald mines I told you I was going to sell him? Ross Yes. Phillip I sold them to him. He sunk every dime he had in them, and they’re worthless. Ross (shocked) It can’t be. Are you sure? Phillip Yeah. I never could have pulled this off if it weren’t true. You know what this means? This means he’s never going to be in the black again in his life. Ross (no longer finding Alan being stuck funny) That makes you happy? Phillip Oh Ross, I can’t tell you how happy that makes me. It makes me very, very happy. (A concerned Ross eyes his nephew and takes a drink). It’s going to be good for the company too. I tell you, I didn’t just do this for myself. He WAS slipping. Ross Well, you were there greasing the old slides, I suppose. Phillip (laughs) I’d have done anything I had to do. (Noticing Ross’ smile has faded). What’s the matter with you? This doesn’t make you happy? Ross I just don’t know enough about it to be happy, so I’m ambivalent. Phillip You’re the one who gave me the idea. Ross I did? Phillip You don’t remember in the Blue Orchid when you said to me if I wanted to get Alan I was going to have to do it from the inside? Ross (uncomfortable) Oh yes, I did, didn’t I? Phillip You said, and I quote, “If you want to change something within an organization, you have to get inside the organization.” And you were right. I got inside, and I stuck it to him good. (They both chuckle). From now on, Spaulding’s going to be run the way it should be run. Ross Well, good luck. You have a lot of work cleaning up after Alan. (And he takes another drink). BREAK (Later, all the guests have left the Country Club. A drunk, and very alone, Phillip “celebrates” his “victory” over his father. Clasping a bottle of champagne, he ascends to the podium and begins to repeat a drunken version of his speech from earlier that evening.) Phillip (Takes the speech out of his pocket) You want to hear it again. (Very drunkenly) A new century. A new (slurs in the microphone) regime. Spaulding is on the verge…Excuse me. Spaulding is destined for great things. And with your support, (more loudly) and with your support, I will meet that destiny head on. (He imagines a crowd of people applauding him). Phillip Spaulding will be a leader. (Yelling) Spaulding will be a winner! (Whispers) I will be a winner. Thank you. (He looks off to the spot where he and Alan had conversed earlier, and starts speaking as if to his father.) Phillip Did you hear that Dad? I won. (Pointing) I beat you! Me! Phillip, your son, BEAT YOU! How does that feel? (He grabs his champagne bottle and points again at nothing). I beat you good. {Phillip starts to leave the podium and drunkenly falls down the steps. He sits up and continues the monologue from the Country Club floor.} Phillip Chelsea thinks (pause) that I did this because I hate you. Ha! Shows you how much she knows. (Loudly) THE ONLY THING THAT I EVER WANTED FROM YOU WAS YOUR LOVE! And you knew it. I didn't care about this. (Starting to cry) Dad, I just wanted you to love me. Why wouldn't you love me? I'm your son. Dad, you’re supposed to love your son. (Shrugs) Doesn't matter. Because guess what, Pop? Now I got everything from you that you ever gave a damn about. I took the only things from you that you were ever capable of loving. How does that feel? How does that feel to be all alone, Dad? Do you like that feeling? (Pause and sighs. Looks down) I lost my name. I lost the only women that I ever loved. But now I got something back. You try and disown me now Dad. {Phillip doesn't realize that Harley has seen the whole thing. She leaves before he sees her.} Phillip (cheeks stained with tears) My friends? (He raises the champagne bottle). I would like to propose a toast to happiness. (Putting the bottle down). All the happiness… (The camera pulls away, while flapper music plays. He again imagines people clapping).
