Brad- March 3

Brad Sherwood- Sunday, March 3, 2002- Irvine Improv

We arrived at this show a good deal later than the one before, and were hoping to still get good seats. As we searched for a table close to the stage, I spotted Michelle and Laura. We sat and talked with them before the show started. This time, Jeff wasn’t the M.C., so I didn’t get picked on. The guy’s name was Matt (don’t remember the last name). Matt introduced the second stand up act (the same one from Thursday), but couldn’t remember his name. He had to look at the writing on his hand to get his name right. After the warm up acts were finished and they introduced Brad, he pretended not to remember Matt’s name. As he left the stage, Brad said, “Thank you, (looks at arm) Matt!” I could tell immediately that the audience would be better for this show. Dave still had to wear a Britney Spears type of headset microphone, but Brad got one that clipped onto his shirt.
Again, they started off with the Fill In The Blank game. To warm up the crowd, he said, “Look, on the ground, it’s a ____.” Someone in the audience yelled out “bird.” Brad thought that was pretty funny. He started making fun of her, pretending to see snails in the sky. The scene was that Brad was Cracker Man and Dave was Spandex Boy, and they had to save the world. It was a very funny game. By the end, they found themselves in a bat mobile that was powered by condoms and cheese wiz.
They played the game with the day in the life of a married couple where they honked the horns and rang the bell. The scene was very similar to Thursday’s.
For the Hearing Impaired game, they found a man who was a traffic accident reconstructer. Again, a wonderful game. The guy said that he worked at home, so Brad started miming just sitting around at home, watching TV, eating Chips, and reconstructing traffic accidents. At one point, Dave asked a question and the man answered, “I do.” So Brad started pretending he was conducting a wedding ceremony. So quick, so clever. Love that game.
Next, they set up microphones and went into the audience. They picked a woman sitting at the table next to me and brought her on stage and placed her behind one of the microphones. Brad said, “Ok, now we’re going to play a game...” and the woman interjected, “Oh no, not Sound Effects!” Brad grabbed the microphone, tipped it back, and announced in a game show host type of voice, “Yes! You are correct! It’s time for....SOUND EFFECTS!!!” This Sound Effects game was much better than Thursday’s. For one thing, the people actually made sounds, which is extremely helpful. I’m drawing a blank on the scene...Michelle...Laura...help!
Next they played Quick Change: Same format as Thursday’s in that they handed horns to the audience. The audience wasn’t as good with honking the horns as they were on Thursday. They didn’t seem to know the right moments, and they didn’t do it very often. This time, the fictional store was a fork store. I’ve seen this game played much better.
Next they played Moving People. Brad picked a woman a few tables down from me, then he looked at my table. We couldn’t quite tell where he was looking, but Laura (the Queen of America) ended up on stage for this one (we found out later that he was actually looking at my mother, but Laura jumped in and saved her, for which she is eternally grateful). The scene took place in some fictional place for which they couldn’t quite master the accent. They started joking that they were secretly from Jamaica since that’s what the accent resembled. Throughout the entire scene, a tiger was chasing Brad. An extremely slow tiger. Slower than you can imagine since Brad didn’t really move anywhere. Laura was moving Dave (a much easier task, I learned, than moving Brad!), and he kept on trying to hide behind a bush, which sounded pretty funny with his accent. It was a wonderful game. Excellent job, Laura!
Next they played the Interrogation game. This time, they didn’t use any audience participation, except to get the suggestions of the crime, location, and object. The crime was that he had attached a fourth leg to a three legged dog. The location was Buckingham Palace (fabulous suggestion of Michelle and Laura), and the object used was a hairdryer. Brad had a really hard time guessing this one. He got that he had attached a dog’s leg, but that he hadn’t attached it to anything, and he expected a more specific location than Buckingham Palace. It was a “vague crime with a vague location” as he put it. He got hairdryer much more quickly.
Again, they closed with the rap song, this time to a man named Harry. Brad never fails to amaze me with that one.
And thus ends a fantastic show. More proof that there is, in fact, a 100% correlation between the audience and the show.
