The next morning Helen woke up in Rudy’s office. Her back hurt from sleeping on the couch. She stood and gave Todd his bottle then headed for the phone to call Steve. When she received no answer she raced down to Oscar’s office to see if he might be there.

“Helen.” Oscar exclaimed. “What’s the matter?”

“Oscar, Steve doesn’t answer his phone. I was hoping he was here.” Helen panted.

“I’ll run over to the house and check it out.” Oscar assured. “He’s sort of involved with a case right now.”

“I hope it’s not too dangerous.” Helen squirmed.

“No Helen. Don’t worry.” Oscar tried to sound reassuring but he knew Helen wasn’t buying it. “If it would make you feel any better I’ll go to the house and see what’s going on.” Oscar offered.

“I’d appreciate that Oscar.”

“I’ll be back within the hour.” After picking up Rudy, Oscar l headed over to Steve’s. When he arrived he knocked several times. When he received no response he let he and Rudy in.

“Nothing out of the ordinary” Rudy observed.

They continued to search the house till they found Steve’s note. “Well that explains it.” Oscar stated. They both read the note.

Oscar

Dolenz picked me up. I’ll try to contact you as soon as possible

Steve

“So what are you going to do?” Rudy wondered

“I guess wait till Steve contacts us.” Oscar sighed.

“What do you think Dolenz wants?” Rudy pressed.

“You haven’t heard? Dolenz has some buyers interested in Steve. I’m sure that’s what this is all about.” Oscar explained.

“Who did Dolenz have in mind?” Rudy questioned.

“That’s what Steve’s mission was.” Oscar informed.

“I see” Rudy related.

“Well let’s get back to the office and see what happens.” Oscar suggested.

“What are you going to tell Helen?” Rudy asked once they were in the car.”

“I’ve already told her he’s on a case. I think I’ll just leave it at that.” Oscar sighed.

“That’s probably for the best.” Rudy agreed.

They pulled into the OSI parking lot. Helen was standing with Todd on the curb. “Did you find Steve?” She asked.

“Like I told you Helen” Oscar led her into the building and up to his office. “He’s on a case. It’s very top secret so I can’t discuss it, even with you.”

Helen frowned. “Well if that’s the way it has to be…”

“I’m afraid it is. You need to stay here though. I promised Steve we would keep an extra watch on you and Todd. You’ll be safer here with us. If you want or need anything, just tell us and we’ll get it for you.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. I suppose I better make out a list of things the baby needs. I brought some of our clothes, but Todd is going to need some baby things.”

“That’s fine. You get your list, and I’ll see Todd gets the very best.” Oscar assured.

Helen took Todd and headed for the room Rudy had prepared for her, it had everything. Helen stated her list.

“You’re worried about Steve aren’t you?” Rudy asked once she was gone.

Oscar nodded. “I just wish he would contact us.” Oscar sighed as he stared at his phone waiting for it to ring.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

In a small aircraft high above the Atlantic Ocean a sleepy Steve began to come around from the drug Dolenz had given him several hours before.

“Where am I?” He asked the man sitting next to him.

“Just take it easy Col. Austin.” The man with the thick Russian accent cautioned as he trained he rifle on Steve. “We paid your friend Dolenz a great deal of money for you. Once we are in Moscow we will find out exactly how your bionics work, then we will build our own bionic man and then dispose of you…”

“Let’s get this straight right now. Dolenz is no friend of mine.” Steve shouted. He was ready to kick this guy in the behind then take over the controls of the plane till he saw he had more one guard and they were all armed.

“As I said col. Austin, just sit back and enjoy the flight. Could I offer you a drink?”

“No thanks, I already took one unwanted nap today. I really don’t wish to take another.”

“You don’t trust us.” The man seemed hurt.

“Not on your life!” Steve spat. He laid back grateful that his mother and Todd were safe at the OSI and Oscar would keep it that way. At least Dolenz couldn’t get to them.

“You must learn to trust us.” The man exclaimed. “I would like to keep this on a friendly basis.”

“There’s nothing friendly about you or any of this!” Steve continued to yell.

“Well try to relax anyway Col. Austin. We will be in Moscow in a few hours.” The man assured.

“That amazes me.” Steve sighed. “You know me, but I don’t know you.”

“Let’s keep it that way.” The man turned away from him.

“Yea, well what ever you say.” Steve sighed.

Steve felt helpless he could do nothing more that sit back and enjoy the trip as the man had told him.

Steve sat for a few more minutes, “By the way” he glanced at his watch. “What time are we to land in Moscow?”

“In a couple of hours” the man told him. “Now no more questions.”

Steve continued to look at his watch. It was about 2:30 in the afternoon but it was later than that where he was. ‘That’s right.’ Steve thought. ‘I’m going East I’m sure Oscar knows by now that I’m ‘missing’ and has surly seen the note.

‘Just keep my mother and son safe.’ Steve thought to himself.

The man with the gun wouldn’t move or change positions. ‘Must be an expert marks man.’ Steve continued to think.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Back in DC Helen gave her list to Oscar. “I’ll see that you get these things right away.” He assured. He gave the list to Russ and told him to get the very best.

“I will Oscar.” Russ headed out to the drug store a couple of blocks away. He had picked out diapers, formula and everything else Helen had put on the list. He was standing in line waiting to pay when Dolenz stepped up to him.

“Am I to assume these items are for my nephew?”

Russ didn’t respond. He merely moved up in the line.

“I’m sure that it is. Here allow me.” Dolenz pulled out his wallet and flashed he wad of money.

“Where did you get that kind of money Dolenz?” Russ wondered.

“I made a business transaction today.” Dolenz laughed he put his wallet away and disappeared into the crowd before Russ could say or do anything.

Russ quickly purchased the items he had picked up and headed back to the OSI to inform Oscar of his findings.

“Run that one by me again!” Oscar demanded.

“You heard me Oscar. Dolenz flashed around a wad of bills then said he had made a “Business deal” I’m sure it has something to do with Steve.”

“I’m sure it does to.” Oscar stared at the phone willing it to ring. “Now I wish Steve would call and confirm that he’s ok.”

“Want me to do some poking around?” Russ asked.

“I’d appreciate that Russ get back to me the minute you find out anything. See if you can find Dolenz again. If you do, bring him in. Oh by the way, keep it under your hat. I don’t want Helen to find out about this I don’t want to cause her any undo worry.”

“You got it Oscar mums the word.” Russ set out to see if he could at least find Dolenz.

In the mean time Oscar called Rudy down to his office to give him the latest on what was going on.

“Wonder what his “business deal” was all about?”

“Our information says he had buyers interested in Steve.” Oscar sighed. “Who do you suppose…The Russians?” Rudy figured.

“That’s what I’m assuming.” Oscar sighed. “And if Dolenz doesn’t have him…”

“They do!” Rudy blurted.

“I’m afraid so.” Oscar muttered. “My only question is where, where do they have him?”

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

The plane touched down in Moscow and Steve was forced off the plane. “I wouldn’t try anything Col. Austin.” They warned. “We have ways of getting to you son. Ways you can’t even imagine. I don’t think you would want that, would you?”

Steve shook his head. “You leave my family out of this.” He seethed.

“Now, now let’s not get hostile about the situation.”

“I won’t become hostile if you won’t!” Steve assured.

“Just get moving” The man gave Steve a shove.

They led Steve down the steps of the plane and into a waiting car. “Now remember.” The man sneered. “One false move and your friends and family in the states will suffer. We have people watching them.”

‘I don’t know if I believe that or not.’ Steve thought, ‘but I don’t want to take any chances. He was going to do what they told him to do.

The man opened the trunk of the car. “We just don’t want you to see where we are going.” He spoke.

“So you expect me to ride in the trunk?” Steve questioned.

“Exactly” again the man motioned for Steve to get into the trunk.

Steve complied only because they had told him his family could suffer if he didn’t cooperate.

They drove around for what seemed to Steve like hours. But it also felt like they hadn’t traveled far. Steve had kept track of what direction the car had turned, and so on. It felt like they had driven around mostly in circles. ‘I have to try and get word to Oscar.’ Steve thought as the car came to a stop. He heard several voices including the man who had been with him on the plane.

“Where is our friend Karolek?” Another man spoke. “He’s in the trunk Zhenechka. Here are the keys you let him out. But be careful.” Karolek cautioned.

“I will.” Zhenechka assured. He walked around to the back of the car and opened the trunk. “Remember Austin. Your family will…”

“Don’t remind me.” Steve grumbled.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“…Thanks Russ.” Oscar placed the receiver back down on the hook and turned to Rudy. “That was Russ he’s closing in on Dolenz. I’m telling you Rudy, as soon as I get my hands on him…”

“I feel the same way.” Rudy muttered. “He better tell us where Steve is…”

“What about Steve?” Helen stood in the doorway.

“We just can’t seem to find him right now.” Rudy admitted. “We think a man named Dolenz might know where Steve is.”

“Dolenz, Dolenz? Helen questioned. “I’ve heard that name before.”

“He’s the man who came to the house claiming Todd was his nephew.” Oscar explained.

“Why would he want to hurt Steve?” Helen sat and prepared for a long answer.

“A couple of years ago Dolenz created….” Oscar went on to explain their run ins with Dolenz.”

“I see.” Was all Helen could get out.” Well I better go see to Todd.”

“Helen.” Oscar stopped her. “That’s why it is imperative that you stay here with Todd.” Oscar warned.

“I will Oscar.” She assured. “I’m going to get back to him. Let me know the minute you find out anything about Steve.’

“You’ll be the first.” Oscar promised.

Helen left Oscar to his work and headed down the hall to take care of her grandson.

“Do you think you should have told her so much?” Rudy asked once she disappeared.

“She has to know the truth Rudy, especially, if we want to keep her and Todd safe.”

Rudy nodded his agreement.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Steve was led into a building on the outskirts of Moscow. “Now all you have to do Col. Austin is just relax and enjoy the hospitality.” Zhenechka smiled.

“You threaten my family and friends and then tell me to relax?” Steve became sarcastic.

“If you cooperate no one gets hurt.” Karolek reminded.

“Where have I heard that before?” Steve muttered as they forced him into the house.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“I’m going to ask you nicely one more time Dolenz.” Oscar was becoming impatient. “Where is Col. Austin?”

“I can honestly say I don’t know Oscar.” Dolenz sneered.

“I know you had your people pick him up!” Oscar screamed “Now you tell me where he is!!”

Dolenz hung his head in shame. “I sold him to a group from Russia.” He admitted.

“And where is he now?” Oscar raged

Dolenz’ shame was short lived. He smiled up at Oscar. “I’m sure he’s in Russia by now.”

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Steve looked around the tiny room. It had only one chair and a table. “This is temporary.” Karolek beamed. “We will transport you to the hospital tomorrow.”

“Hospital? Why?” Steve wanted to know.

“I told you.” Karolek laughed. “We must find out how your bionics work in order to build our own bionic man. And if you’re very good, we just might let you live…”

Oscar gave Dolenz a hard look. “If anything happens to him Dolenz, it will be on your head.”

“Frankly Mr. Goldman, I really don’t care.” Dolenz smiled. “You see, I’ve gotten what I wanted out of the deal. You can throw me to the wolves if you want. The monies I received in the transaction are in a Swiss bank account for my sister when she gets out of prison.”

Oscar shook his head and turned to the security team in his office. “Get him out of here.” He ordered.

The security team escorted Dolenz out of Oscar’s office.

“We have to find him Russ. I’m putting you in charge.” Oscar turned to him

I’ll be on the next flight out.” Russ left Oscar’s office and headed for the airport.

“What do you think his chances are?” Rudy asked.

“Slim and none” Oscar sighed, “but I have to try something.”

Rudy nodded and headed back down to his own office.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Steve had sat in the little room for hours when Karolek, Zhenechka and another man walked in. “Col. Austin.” Karolek began. “May I introduce Dr. Olezka Zivon; he will be performing the surgery…”

“I see.” Steve muttered. He and taken just about all he was going to from these people. He knew that Todd and his mother had to still be safe at the OSI. With him missing, and the note he had left for Oscar, he knew Oscar wouldn’t allow them to leave the building.

“Did you hear me?” Karolek snapped.

“Steve nodded. “I heard you. He rose from the chair and grabbed Karolek and Zhenechka and banged their heads together knocking them unconscious “Do you want to be next?” He turned toward the Dr.

Zivon shook his head. “No I don’t think so.” He stammered.

“Good, then you won’t mind if I leave.” Before leaving he tied the three men up and locked them in three separate closets.

Out on the street he found a pay phone, he quickly dialed the operator and got a call going to the US.

Oscar was shocked when his private line rang. He quickly grabbed it “Steve? Is that you?”

“This is the operator.” The voice stated. “Will you pay for a call from Col….”

“Yes I will!” Oscar shouted “Steve are you all right?”

“Yea Oscar I’m fine. I’m in Russia. How do I get out of here?”

“Go to the American Embassy. I’ll get word to them and tell them you’re on your way. They should have the paper work ready by the time you get there. Are you in Moscow? Oscar wanted to know.” He frantically waved at Rudy who had just come back in.

“No, but I’m not too far. You give them a call. Tell them I’ll be there in about five minutes.”

“We’ll do Steve. Call us when you get there.”

Before I let you go. Mom and Todd are they ok?”

“Yes they’re fine.” Oscar assured.

“Good. The people I’m with told me they could get at them.”

“Don’t worry about that Steve. We’ll keep them safe. Just get to the Embassy.

“I’ll do that.” Steve hung up the phone and headed into Moscow where he would find the American Embassy.

“Was that Steve?” Rudy questioned.

“Yea he must have gotten away…”

“You know Hanson is going to have a field day with this one.” Rudy pointed out.

“I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it Rudy.” Oscar sighed. The two sat back and waited in anticipation for Steve’s call that would say he was safe at the American Embassy.

After what seemed like hours Oscar’s private line rang again. Oscar grabbed it “Steve?”

“Yea Oscar I’m at the Embassy. I’ll be on the next flight out. I should be to Dulles by 1:00 your time.”

“We’ll be waiting.” Oscar hung up. “I better call Russ, see if I can catch him before he leaves.”

“Why didn’t you contact him as soon as Steve called the first time?” Rudy wondered.

“I thought Steve might still need his help.”

“I understand.” Rudy glanced at his watch “When did Steve say he would be here.”

“Not till about one in the morning. I plan on being at the airport to get him.” Oscar picked up the phone and caught Russ just as he was getting ready to board the plane to Moscow.

“Do you still want me to go and make sure?” Russ wanted to know.

“I don’t think that will be necessary, but standby just in case. He’s safe at the Embassy right now.”

“I’ll just wait right here..” Russ hung up the phone and went into the lounge to wait.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

As Steve was getting ready to leave the Embassy two guards approached him “We checked out the house you told us, we have Karolek, Zhenechka and Dr. Olezka Zivon in custody. They will be on the same flight as you. We will escort them personally.”

“I appreciate that.” Steve said. They headed for the airport. The Ambassador rode with Steve while the guards, Karolek, Zhenechka and Dr. Olezka Zivon rode in the other.

“Don’t worry Col. Austin.” The Ambassador assured. “Some one will meet those three at Dulles. I’ll inform Mr. Goldman.”

“Thanks again.” Steve got out of the airport and they all headed inside.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Oscar and Rudy had sat most of the night drinking coffee so they would be awake when Steve’s plane landed.

“I suppose we better get going.” Oscar assumed when he glanced at his watch it was 12:30

“Do we have someone in place to greet our guests?” Rudy asked before they left the office.

“Russ is already there, he knows. I sent two others to join him, that way there will be an escort for each one.”

“That’s good. I just hope they don’t cause trouble. I won’t rest till they are all on the ground at Dulles, and Karolek, Zhenechka and Dr. Olezka Zivon are on there way to jail.”

“I agree with that one.” Oscar shut the door behind them and they headed for the airport. Steve’s plane was on time. Oscar and Rudy were waiting just inside the terminal when Steve stepped inside.

“Glad to have you back.” Oscar greeted. Then he saw Karolek, Zhenechka and Dr. Zivon, “They the ones?”

Steve nodded. “I’ll admit. I was a little nervous with them on the plane with me.”

“Sorry about that. But we had to get them back to the states too.” Oscar apologized.

“I guess you’re right.” Steve sighed. “I just don’t want them around me. I want to go see my son.”

“He and your mother are safe at the OSI.” Oscar informed.

“Well that’s good. I just want to go reacquaint myself with Todd, then I’ll help you on this case.”

“Sounds like a winner to me.” Oscar exclaimed as they passed through the doors of the OSI. Oscar headed for his office while Steve searched out his son.

Helen jumped to her feet at the sight of her son. “Oh Steve! I’m glad to see you.” She cried. “Are you alright?”

“Yea, I’ll be even better once I see Todd.” Steve looked around the room.

“He’s been sleeping for quite some time.” She looked at the clock it was 2:30 .“He’s right in here.” Helen opened the door to a small room Oscar had fixed up for the baby. “If I were you I’d save my hello’s for later.” Helen smiled.

Steve walked over to the crib and smiled down at his son. “You know mom, I don’t know what I’d do if anything happened to this little guy.”

“I feel the same way. But he’s fine right now. I’ll wait for later to gather up his things then we can take him home later this morning.”

“I have a couple of things to clear up with Oscar. I’ll be back in the mean time why don’t you get some sleep then we will all go home.” Steve smiled.

“Good. We’ll be ready.” Helen laid down as was asleep before Steve got out the door. He headed down to Oscar’s office.

“So Oscar do we have everyone?” Was Steve’s first question he still remembered the warning they had given him about involving his family.

“Yea we’re still trying to track down the Swiss bank account the money went into. Hopefully we can put a hold on it so Laura can’t have access to it.”

“That would be a good idea. I hate to think of the legal trouble she could give me…”

“You don’t need to worry, her parental rights were terminated remember?”

“Oh yea I still want you to find the money.”

“We will we’re close. I also want to know if there is still someone here who can get at my family.”

“We’re working on it.” Oscar stated. “I don’t think there is anything to worry about. I have a feeling they were just bluffing.

“I hope so. I’m going to wait a little longer then take my family home.” Steve stood to leave just as he got to the door the phone rang. Oscar picked it up.

Steve stood for a moment it the doorway “What is it Oscar?”

“I don’t know how to say this.” Oscar replaced the phone. “Hanson wants to see both of us. NOW! As he put it…”

“Hanson? What does he want?” Steve wondered as he glanced at his watch. “It’s four in the morning.”

“I don’t know. Let’s get over to the NSB and find out. Besides you know Hanson. He never sleeps.” Oscar and Steve headed out of Oscar’s office and out to the car.

“I still don’t understand what Hanson could want.” Steve sighed as he slumped down in the front seat of Oscar’s car. “I just want to get Todd home.”

“It won’t take long Steve. I’m sure Hanson just wonders about your little trip to Russia…”

“That wasn’t my fault.” Steve defended.

“I know that Steve. But you know how Hanson can be.”

“But Oscar nothing happened…” Steve protested.

“I’m sure once you tell Hanson that we’ll be on our way.” Oscar assured.

“I hope you’re right.” Steve muttered.

They rode the rest of the way to the NSB wrapped in their own thoughts. When they arrived the gate guard waved them on through.

“I don’t know if that’s a good sign, or a bad sign.” Steve noted.

“Just hang in there pal.” Oscar pulled into the parking lot. “I’m sure we can clear this all up in a matter of a few moments.”

“I don’t know Oscar you know Hanson.” Steve sighed.

“All too well I’m afraid” Oscar muttered as he and Steve got out of the car.

Hanson was waiting at the entrance when they stepped in. “Sorry to call you out so early in the morning like this…”

“Hanson. I want you to know that I was an unwilling participant in my journey to Moscow.” Steve barked before Hanson could finish his sentence.

“I just need to ask you a few questions.” Hanson looked from Steve to Oscar and then back to Steve. “I’m sorry for any trouble this may be causing you. I’m aware you want to get back to your son.”

“You got that right.” Steve snorted. “Now what’s this all about Hanson?”

“I promise Col Austin it will only take a moment. Let’s go up to my office, we’ll be more comfortable there.”

Oscar and Steve followed him up to his office. “I just want you to tell me in your own words what happened.” Hanson sat with a note pad ready to write down everything Steve told him.

“Well it all started…” Steve related the entire story to Hanson who jotted down as much as he could.

“My biggest concern” Steve finished. “Is that Dolenz and the Soviets will escape from prison or that what they told me…about having someone on the inside to harm my family will come to pass.”

Hanson turned to Oscar “How is that investigation coming?”

“I have Russ looking into it. He is checking the backgrounds of all OSI employees with security clearances below a five.”

“That sounds like a good place to start.” Hanson agreed. “What about the money Dolenz says was deposited into the Swiss account?”

“We have agents looking for it as we speak.” Oscar informed him.

“Well then looks like you’re covering all basses. Let us know if you need any help. And as far as Dolenz or the others escaping…I don’t see that happening. They are in a very secure prison.”

“Thanks for you support.” Oscar shook hands with Hanson then he and Steve turned to leave.

Hanson watched as the two walked out the door then picked up the phone. “Send Briscoe in” he ordered.

Agent Don Briscoe appeared in front of Hanson’s desk in a matter of moments. “Yes Boss.”

“You heard all of that I assume?” Hanson asked.

“Of course you still want me to follow Austin?”

Hanson nodded

“Sounds like you still don’t trust him.” Briscoe smirked. “It’s not Austin I don’t trust. I don’t trust the Soviets. Who knows what they did to him without his knowledge.”

“You’re talking about brainwashing or something?” Briscoe asked.

“Exactly, don’t let him out of your sight. If anyone out of the ordinary pays Austin a visit…or you suspect something just isn’t right. You contact me right away.”

“I will. I have Austin’s address I’ll get right over to his house.” Briscoe left and headed for Steve’s.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Steve pulled into the driveway. ‘Someone must have moved in across the street.’ Steve noted the car in the driveway but said nothing to anyone else.

“Well Mom we’re back. I still don’t know that someone isn’t out there ready to harm you and Todd so you need to be careful. I don’t want you going out alone with him. Oscar said he would assign someone to run you on errands and escort you on your walks with Todd.”

“Is that really necessary?” Helen sounded bewildered.

“Until I know you and Todd are safe…everything is necessary.” Steve observed.

“When will he get here? I like to take Todd out at least twice a day. First we run errands then we spend time in the park.”

“I’m glad you like to have him out in the fresh air, but until…”

His words were cut off by the phone ringing. Steve picked up the receiver. “Hello.”

“Steve? it’s Oscar. Your worries are over. I have someone here who will watch over your mother and Todd when you can’t his name is Mark Press. He’ll be right over.”

“Thanks Oscar. We’ll be waiting for him.” Steve set the receiver down. “Oscar is sending someone right over.” He exclaimed.

“Well that’s good, because it’s time for our outing.” Helen started getting Todd ready and by the time she finished Agent Press was standing on the front porch.

Steve opened the door. “Press?” he asked.

“At your service Col. Austin” Press acknowledged.

“May I introduce my Mother, Helen and my son Todd?” Steve pointed out “Mr. Goldman said I was to watch over the two of them.” Press stated

“Yes. Just keep them in your sight at all times.” Steve ordered. “My mother wants to take Todd for an outing right now.”

“As you say, Mrs. Elgin shall we?”

Steve stopped him for a moment. “How did you know her name was Elgin, and not Austin like me?”

“Mr. Goldman told me sir. He explained that although you name was Austin your mother’s name was Elgin and I should address her as such.”

Steve thought for a moment. “I’ll call to confirm that.”

“As you wish maybe you would be more comfortable if you called him right now, before I leave the house with your mother and son.”

“I think I’ll do that.” Steve picked up the phone. “Yes Oscar did you tell Press my mother’s name was Elgin?”

“As a matter of fact yes I hope I wasn’t out of line on that one Steve.” Oscar replied.

“No, not at all he just called her Mrs. Elgin, I wondered how he knew.”

“I thought it would be more respectful if he called her that instead of Helen. I figured if she waned him to call her Helen she could authorize that herself.”

“Ok well thanks.” Steve hung up. “Looks like you in Press. You understand why I don’t trust anyone.”

“I wouldn’t either if it were my mother and son.” Press held the door while Helen struggled out with the stroller.

“Have a nice time you two.” Steve called.

“We will I have some things to pick up. I thought first we’d go to the park then the store.”

“Sounds good I’ll see you when you get back.” Steve stepped back into the house and closed the door. “At least I don’t have to worry now.” He sighed.

From the house across the street Agent Briscoe watched as Helen headed down the sidewalk with Todd and Press. He took out his binoculars and looked at Press one more time close up. Then he dialed Hanson. “Sir you’re not going to believe it.”

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Oscar was just getting ready to step out of his office and get some lunch when Russ came running up to him. “We’ve got it Oscar.” He called.

“Got what?” Oscar had just opened the door to Rudy’s office. Rudy stood at he desk perplexed as to the way Oscar was entering his office.

Russ caught up to him. “We know who the ‘man on the inside’ is.

“Who?” by now the two had stepped into Rudy’s office.

“It’s Press…Mark Press.” Russ panted….

“You’re not serious” Oscar cried.

“I’m afraid I’m very serious Oscar.” Russ had caught his breath by now. “Press isn’t his name either. It’s Jurg, Jurg Zivon.”

Oscar glanced at Russ. “You don’t mean?”

“That’s right he’s Dr. Olezka Zivon’s brother.” Russ indicated.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“What is it Briscoe?” Hanson asked. He was surprised that Briscoe had called so early

“Does the name Jurg Zivon mean anything to you?” Briscoe asked.

Zivon? I thought his name was Olezka.” Hanson sounded perplexed.

“Olezka is Zivon’s brother.” Briscoe informed.

“What about him?” Hanson demanded.

“He just left Austin’s house with Austin’s mother and baby.”

“Thanks for the information.” Hanson gave a vindictive smile. “I think we’ve got him.”

As soon as Briscoe hung up, Hanson called Oscar who was still in the middle of his conversation with Russ.

“How did he slip by us?” Oscar wanted to know.

“He had all the bases covered. When we fingerprinted him he must have substituted Press’ prints with his own. We just lifted new ones off of a file he was carrying right before he left….”

“Left? Russ we have to get to Steve’s and fast. He’s the agent I sent to look out for Helen and Todd!”

Oscar had just stood and was ready to leave when his private line rang. Thinking it was Steve he picked it up. “Steve we’re on…”

“This is Hanson, Oscar.” Hanson’s words were filled with sarcasm

“What is it Hanson. I was just on my way to…”

“Austin’s house” Hanson finished.

“As a matter of fact yes” Oscar sat on the edge of his desk.

“It appears that Austin may be in with the Soviets after all.” Hanson smirked.

“Why do you say that?” Oscar demanded.

“I have a man watching his house. He just saw a Soviet operative by the name of…”

“I know who you’re talking about!” Oscar shouted. “He’s been working for me. He’s the plant! Meet me at Steve’s in five minutes. He’s already got Helen and Todd!”

“I’ll be right there! Oscar I’m sorry.”

“Actually it may work to our benefit!” Oscar noted. “:Just be there!”

At the same time Oscar was leaving his office Hanson at the NSB had called for his car.

Steve busied himself around the house. His mother insisted on doing the laundry and housework, but Steve didn’t think it would hurt to gather up the laundry while he listened to the ball game on TV.

‘This is nice ‘ he thought to himself as he sat watching the game. Mom and Todd are safe, Todd is out getting fresh air, and Oscar says there is nothing for right now.” He sat back on the couch and closed his eyes.

“What all do you need at the store Mrs. Elgin?” Press/Zivon smiled.

“Just a few things for the baby” Helen replied. “He’s out of just about everything.”

“Very well” Zivon held the door for her while she pushed Todd’s stroller inside. ‘I can’t wait to get you to the park.’ Zivon thought. ‘There I will carry out my plan, there are too many people here.’ “If you want to push the baby, I’ll grab the cart.” Zivon continued to work on earning Helen’s trust.

“Thank you. That’s very kind of you.” Helen made her way through pushing Todd’s stroller while Zivon followed behind with the cart.

“Think nothing of it.” he watched as Helen began loading items into the cart.

“I think I will wait on getting anything that might spoil before we get home.” Helen stated

“Very wise choice” ‘It could get very spoiled indeed.’ Zivon thought.

Steve was startled when he hard tires screeching outside. He leaped up from the couch where he had been dozing and ran for the door.

“What is it?” He asked when he saw Oscar and Hanson racing up the sidewalk.

“It’s Press Steve. He’s the one. Russ just checked his background….how long have they been gone?

“Almost an hour now” Steve frantically looked at his watch.

“Where were they going?” Hanson asked.

“To the store and the park” Steve ran down the stairs and jumped into Oscar’s car. “It’s the park on ninth, mom likes that one best…”

“Why?” Oscar asked.

“No people around.” Steve cried.

The three of them got into Oscar’s car and sped for the park.

Helen, Todd and Zivon finished the shopping. “Now shall we go to the park?” Helen asked Todd.

‘I thought we’d never get to it.’ Zivon thought.

“The park isn’t to far away. I like the one on ninth. It’s so peaceful.” Helen called as Zivon struggled with the grocery bags.

“It’s only about a block from the store and two blocks from Steve’s.”

“You say it’s peaceful?” Zivon was hoping she meant no one would be around.

“There is hardly anyone there.” Helen innocently told him.”

‘Very good’ Zivon thought ‘very good indeed. They continued walking toward the park.

“I usually sit on a bench and read. There is a library just across the street so I can return and take books while I’m out. I’m in the middle of a great novel now.” Helen parked the stroller next to her and pulled a book out of a small bag. “You can just set those down if you want.” Helen suggested.

“Thank you.” Zivon set the bags down then walked around as if he were watching over Helen and Todd.

Helen sat for several minutes ‘rocking’ the stroller till Todd was lulled to sleep then she picked up her book and began to read.

Zivon was watching to see if anyone was watching. Then he slowly pulled a gun from under his coat

“Can’t we go any faster?” Oscar barked from the backseat.

“We’re going as fast as we can.” Russ called out as he steered the car through traffic.

“I just hope we’re not to late.” Steve sighed from the back. “If he hurts them so help me…”

“He won’t Steve. We’ll get there on time.” Oscar assured.

“I just hope he didn’t take them someplace else.” Steve sighed.

Russ brought the car to a screeching halt at the curb next to the Park Steve leaped out and ran for the area he knew his mother frequented. Oscar and Russ were right behind him.

“Drop it Zivon!” Russ called pulling out his own gun. “Just put it down slow. We have the park surrounded.” He bluffed.

Zivon put his gun to Helen’s head then slowly let it fall to the ground. He sprinted off as fast as he could.

“I’ll get him.” Steve called out. “You stay with mom and the baby.”

“Oscar and Russ stayed behind and tried to explain everything to the bewildered Helen standing in front of them.”

Steve caught up to Zivon and knocked him to the ground. He picked him up and held him by the shirt collar. “I ought to kill you right now!” he seethed, but I’ll let the law take care of you.”

Zivon shook with fear. “Don’t kill me Austin, please don’t kill me” he pleaded.

Steve held him tight as they made their way back to where Oscar stood with Helen, Russ and Todd.

“Here, I’ll take him Steve.” Russ offered. “I’ve already called for a back up unit. You go with your family.”

Steve helped his mother off the park bench. “I think it’s finally over.” He smiled. “Let’s go home shall we?”

Three days later Oscar stood in Oscar’s office. “I have great news. First we tracked down the Swiss Bank account. The money has been frozen as it was obtained illegally, and Dolenz is going to prison for a long time…”

“If he stays” Steve sighed.

“He will.” Oscar assured.

“What about the Soviets.” Steve wondered.

“They are all in prison too. As soon as they are done serving their time, They are on their way back to Moscow.”

“I hope they don’t cause anymore trouble.” Steve muttered. “He turned and headed for the door.

“Where are you headed?” Oscar wondered

“I’m going home to my son.” Steve told him.

Oscar looked from Steve to the file on his desk then back to Steve. “Ok pal I’ll see you sometime tomorrow.”

“Yea Oscar tomorrow, not to early though my son and I want to sleep in.”

“What ever you say Steve. By the way, did your mother decide to stay here in DC?”

Steve nodded. “Yes we’re both relieved about that one.” Again he turned for the door.

Oscar watched as he walked out the door. He again looked down at the file containing Steve’s next assignment. “Aw what the…” He picked up the phone and dialed another agent to handle the job.
