Far From Home Part 11

"Can I take your order?" Joey asked Cordelia, who was hiding behind a menu. She got no response. "Hello?"

"Go away."

"Look, are you going to buy something, or--"

"No, I said go away!" Cordelia put down the menu and looked at Joey with a tear stained face.

"I'm-- I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was you," Joey apologized. "Can I do anything?"

"Just go away," Cordelia said. "This is all Buffy's fault," she said as Joey started to walk away. Joey rolled her eyes and took a seat. "You'll curse the day she came into your life. I do. Since then it's been violence this, Angel that. Everyday you wake up not knowing if you're going to live to see the next day. But you'll experience that soon enough with Jen."

"What?"

"Oops..."

"So Jen hasn't caused enough trouble? She's a Slayer, too?" Joey growled.

"I'm afraid so."

"And that's why there were vampires here in the first place?"

"Probably."

Joey shook her head. "Like my life didn't suck enough before. All I have is Dawson and my sister and Bodie and my nephew. Now I have to be constantly worrying that they could die or turn into vampires?"

"At least Capeside isn't on a Hellmouth!" Cordelia replied. "At least you don't live on the gates of hell!"

"Sometimes I wonder..."

Buffy slept uneasily in the Icehouse that night. She told Bessie that she would be going home in a week to give her some notice and Bessie insisted that she keep her room until she left.

"How could you do this to me? Now you're giving up on me?"

"Angel, yes. And it would be easier if you just left me alone," Buffy cried.

"First you kill me, then you desert me."

"Angel, I can't bring you back. I tried. I can't."

"You did not try. You just wore that stupid ring I have you and hoped that everything would get better. I would have tried for you. I loved you." Angel held up the ring and enclosed it in his fist. He squeezed it until his palm bled. Then his chest started to bleed as well. "This is what I think of your love."

"Fine, fine!" But as Buffy watched the red drip to the floor, her composure started to waver. "No, Angel, I--" And then Angel morphed into Xander.

"Move on, Buffy, you have to move on," he said tenderly.

"It's so hard..."

Buffy shot up in her bed. "What was that? I don't think it was vivid enough to be a prophesy. Guilt, probably, for giving up..." Buffy laid down to go back to sleep when she heard a tapping at her window. She got up cautiously, grabbing a stake that she had left on her table. She opened the window slightly and almost fainted dead away at what she saw.

"Invite me in," Angel whispered, "I have something you dropped."

Jen was on her way back to the Icehouse. She figured she should go apologize to Buffy. After all, she didn't know what was going on and Jen didn't want to get on the other Slayer's bad side. Too late for that, she thought. Maybe I should have left earlier. It's getting dark. Jen walked on, unaware that she was being followed. She stopped. "What if Joey's there?" she mumbled to herself.

"Then maybe she'll give you a hardy welcome home," a male stranger behind her suggested. Jen gasped and turned around.

"Hello, dearie," a strangely pale looking woman said. "So nice to finally meet you."

"Who are you?" Jen slowly backed away.

"Ah, ah. Play first, questions later," the man said as his face changed into a vampires. Jen felt around for her stake.

"Oh crap," she said, realizing that she had left it in her kitchen. "Wait, what's that behind you?"

"What?" the two vampires asked, turning around. That gave Jen enough time to get a head start to the Icehouse.

"I can't believe we fell for that!"

Jen ran as fast as she could possibly go. Good thing I'm wearing sneakers, she thought. She was starting to get tired and out of breath. They're gaining on me, Jen thought, terrified of what they might do if they caught her. Faster. She fought the increasingly unbearable pain she was getting in her stomach and was relieved to see Giles and Oz standing under the lights to the Icehouse. "Get in quick!" she said breathlessly. "And don't invite the vampires in!" Giles and Oz followed her in and baracaded the door.

"Okay, Slayer, you've won this round!" the male vampire yelled. "Spike and Drusilla won't be so easy to beat next time!"

"Next time?" Jen panted meekly. "Oh crap."

"Slayer," Joey threw her hands up in the air. "Great, you were right Cordy. Now everyday can be like this."

"Spike and Drusilla?" Oz asked. "We're in big trouble."

"Who are Spike and Drusilla?" Jen asked, walking around to get rid of the cramps in her legs.

"Dru killed Kendra," Giles said.

"The Slayer I replaced?"

"Yes. Never look her in the eye," Giles warned, remembering how he was tricked and delusioned into believing that she was Jenny Calender.

"And Spike is just bad news," Oz said, breaking off a table leg and splintering it into four pieces. "Arm yourselves," he said, giving a stake to Giles, Cordelia, and Jen.

"Hey, you're going to have to pay for that!" Joey objected.

"I'll bring you money tomorrow," Giles said impatiently. "We have to find Buffy."

"Now?" Jen huffed.

"No, it's too dangerous. We'll go back to the hotel and drop Jen off on the way. Buffy has to come back here tonight, she'll be safe. We'll tell her tomorrow. Joey, don't let Bessie or Bodie invite them in. Go straight home when you're ready to leave.

"But I have school tomorrow," Jen said. "What will you do?"

"Oh for goodness-- I'll get Willow to take care of that. A snake infestation should fix that problem."

"Snakes? In Capeside?" Joey asked.

"Yes, snakes in bloody Capeside!" Giles yelled. He looked at the confused faces and apologized for yelling. "It's been a really long day," he shrugged.
