George Nordgren

George tends to be a very shy and withdrawn character. George barely spoke and shied away from others from at least the first grade. He had few, if any, friends until he began speaking through Wally, a wooden giraffe marionette that he built with his father. He was forward and social through Wally, and enjoyed a brief spurt of intense popularity at this time. When Wally eventually broke, Arthur convinced him to speak for himself. He was still shy, but began learning to be more social. He joined the poetry club and read a poem in front of everyone without any help from Wally. He even spends time with Arthur's gang. He is facinated by flight and enjoys building things.

After Mr. Ratburn talks to him about his troubles with classwork, George learns that he is dyslexic, a trait he shares with Mr. Haney. George is, unfortunately, a target for bullies, often being chased by the Tough Customers, and knocked over by Binky. He is especially concerned over being bullied on account of his newly discovered dyslexia problem. To prevent this, he decides to become tough, and goes to Binky of all people for help. Binky nicknames him "Hammer" and tries to teach him to be tough. George is, however, so terrible at it that Binky gives up.

George as "Hammer." "Hammer" winks in a fantasy sequence.

George writes an essay that begins as follows, corrected for spelling:

"The Dummy in the Closet"
