One More Snarf and Still More Fun
Now armed with an interplanetary vehicle, the Thundercats start branching out and splitting up more and more, giving their enemies more and more opportunities.

Feliner Part 1

The Thundercats have decided to build an interplanetary vehicle.  There’s just one catch.  They don’t have a megacondensor, so their vehicle won’t work.  But they’re going to build the Feliner anyway.  Sigh.  Meanwhile, Vultureman has convinced Rataro, the mutant warlord, to assist in the destruction of the Thundercats.  Showing rare creativity for a mutant, Rataro takes the Rat Star to the Planet of Snarfs (yes, there’s a whole planet of them) and kidnaps Snarfer.  He brings Snarfer back to Third Earth, gets the mutants to agree that he is in command, and then, much to their surprise, releases Snarfer.  Snarfer makes a mad dash for Cat’s Lair and the mutants let him go.  Oh, and Snarfer is wearing metal cuffs on his wrists and on his tail.  It’s important for a later plot development.  Anyway, Slithe is puzzled by Snarfer’s release and demands to know what’s going on.  Rataro explains that he can bring Snarfer back to Castle Plun-Darr anytime he wants to.  Meanwhile, Snarfer finds Snarf outside the Lair and there is a joyous reunion, though Snarf forbids Snarfer from calling him Uncle Osbert.  The other Thundercats are glad to hear that many snarfs survived Thundera’s destruction and they’re all sitting around talking to Snarfer when his metal cuffs start glowing.  Why was he still wearing them? Why didn’t the Thundercats release him?  We may never know the answer and to be honest, there are too many headaches involved in trying to figure it out.  The long and short of it is, Snarfer ended up back at Castle Plun-Darr and the Thundercats minus the Thunderkittens loaded in the Thundertank and took off after him.  Unfortunately, the Rat Star proves to be more than a match for the Thundertank and after a battle filled with all kinds of really odd guns and weapons, the Thundertank is powerless and the Rat Star is moving in for the kill.  Here is where this episode, which up until this point hasn’t been too bad despite the addition of a second snarf, really takes a turn for the worst.  Lion-O jumps out of the Tank and tries to get the Rat Star’s attention.  Hopefully, this will buy Panthro and Tygra more time so they can fix the Thundertank.  The plan works, but Lion-O is left all alone as he leads the Rat Star away from the other Thundercats.  Snarf and Cheetara happily watch the clouds of battle while Tygra and Panthro work furiously to get the Tank back online.  And Lion-O is up against a ship that has crippled Panthro’s favorite toy.  So what happens?  What always happens?  The Sword of Omens manages to take down the Rat Star, it crashes, and the Thundercats free Snarfer.  But now they’re left with the problem of getting Snarfer home.  Surprisingly enough, it’s Snarf who comes up with the solution.  Going against everything the Code of Thunder stands for, Snarf suggests they steal the Rat Star’s megacondensor.  And Panthro and Lion-O pronounce him a genius.  End part 1.

Feliner Part 2

This part is actually not bad with a few exceptions.  We begin by watching Rataro and company pile out of the wrecked Rat Star.  Slithe, Monkian, and Jackalman are feeling more than a little rebellious and decide that Rataro is no longer the leader.  Rataro has a few things to say about this and after some discipline with the Rat’s Eyes/Rat Sais, the other mutants are quickly back in line.  Rataro produces the Mu-Tank and they haul the wrecked Rat Star back to Castle Plun-Darr.  Meanwhile, the Thundertanks all pile into the Thundertank (with Kit and Kat this time) and head for the wreckage of the Rat Star.  But when they get there, it’s mysteriously vanished.  Weird.  With Sight Beyond Sight, Lion-O spots the mutants pulling it up to the moat by Castle Plun-Darr.  Off to the mutant castle.  Unfortunately, they’re met halfway by the Mu-Tank and a fairly good fight scene starts.  Sometime during the scuffle, Lion-O and the snarfs are thrown from the Thundertank and rather than rushing back into the fight, Lion-O makes a surprisingly smart decision and goes after the megacondensor.  He and the snarfs race for the wreckage of the Rat Star, but they find the megacondensor gone.  And guess who has it: Mumm-Ra.  Deciding to make a substantive appearance in this two-parter, Mumm-Ra takes off with the condensor and Lion-O gets his clawline to hook into Mumm-Ra’s robe.  Hand thing, that Claw Shield.  Anyway, Lion-O goes dangling behind Mumm-Ra as the mummy flies toward the Black Pyramid and somehow, Lion-O gets Mumm-Ra to drop the condensor and the two fall out of the sky.  This is where it gets strange.  Mumm-Ra looks around, spots Lion-O, and gives up.  Bye, Mumm-Ra.  Lion-O starts looking for the fallen condensor and Rataro appears.  He was thrown out of his tank during the fight, too.  He and Lion-O start fighting, Lion-O calls the other Thundercats, and they suddenly defeat the Mu-Tank in one big push and race to the rescue.  Long and short of it: the Thundercats get their megacondensor.  And they send Snarfer home.  Thank Jaga.

The Secret of the Ice King

Sword in the Hole

The Wolfrat

Overall, this is a really good episode.  My favorite part about it: the Sword plays no big role.  Yea!  We begin with Mumm-Ra and Vultureman.  Strange team?  Yup.  But that’s where we start.  Vultureman shows off his attack robot, the Wolfrat.  Mumm-Ra shows off something called miniaturization gas.  It makes people little, as Vultureman quickly discovers.  So the Wolfrat is sent to Cat’s Lair with the gas.  Meanwhile, Cheetara’s sixth sense is starting to act up.  She tells the other Thundercats, but they can find nothing wrong.  As the Wolfrat works his way into the Lair, they keep looking.  But the robot is sneaky and has all kinds of neat little tricks.  He can change form, and the Thundercats never see him.  Eventually, the Wolfrat finds a ventilation shaft and shoots the gas in.  All the Thundercats are gathered together and find it rather odd when they start to shrink.  Tygra figures out what’s going on, but wonders if they’re big enough to create an antidote.  They decide to try and get to the lab when…the Wolfrat bursts in!  Big fight scene with Lion-O and Tygra teaming up to do most of the fighting.  Great stuff, there.  Anyway, they finally get away from the robot and we switch to Snarf.  Snarf is coming back from the Berbil village and wonders where everyone is.  When he finds the Wolfrat, he really wonders where everyone is, because the Wolfrat starts to kick his trash.  Thundercat miniatures to the rescue!  Snarf is understandably surprised, but they manage to get away from the Wolfrat again and get back to Tygra’s lab.  Meanwhile, the mutants are on the attack and have reached Cat’s Lair.  The Sword from its chamber starts growling, so Lion-O decides to try and get to it.  After some adventures in the ventilation shafts (where it looks like Snarf has neglected his cleaning duties), Lion-O makes it and then calls on Sight Beyond Sight.  The Sword has not been miniaturized (though everyone else’s weapons have been) and it’s great to watch tiny Lion-O looking through the Sword.  Anyway, he figures out the mutants are attacking and gets back to the others.  Panthro, during this time, has been highly productive and constructed a snarf suit for Snarf.  It can withstand the laser blasts from the Wolfrat.  And it’s a good thing, too, because the Wolfrat decides to make an appearance.  With more great teamwork, they defeat the robot and prepare for the mutants.  Well, except for Tygra, anyway.  He stays behind to finish the antidote.  The mutants make a grand entrance and start looking for the Thundercats.  They find them, but things aren’t as easy as they’d hoped.  The Thundercats still put up a great fight and lead the mutants on a merry chase through the Lair.  But the chase can’t last forever.  So as luck would have it, Tygra finds the antidote and gets himself back up to normal size.  He sees Lion-O riding Snarf down the hall and gets them into the lab where they’re returned to normal size.  Almost.  Snarf is supersized.  And Snarf proceeds to take care of the mutants.  Someone mentions that Snarf will return to normal size in a couple hours, too, so we are relieved that we won’t have a giant fuzz ball wandering around for the rest of the series.

Good and Ugly

Divide and Conquer

Micrits

This is a strange episode.  It’s really not that good, but there are some redeeming qualities scattered throughout that make it hilarious.  It’s hard to rank, so we’ll call it average.  We begin with Panthro returning with Thundrillium in the Thundertank.  Snarf wonders where Lion-O is and Panthro reveals that he’s out searching for more Thundrillium.  When we see Lion-O, he doesn’t look like he’s searching for Thundrillium, but whatever.  Lion-O decides it’s a great evening and lies down to rest. And falls asleep.  While asleep, these little yellow threads laced with Thundranium start tying down our favorite leader.  Pretty soon, Lion-O wakes up and discovers he can’t move. Then a bunch of tiny people show up. (Why do I feel like I’m watching Gulliver’s Travels?)  They call themselves the Micrits, they live around Cat’s Lair, and every time the Thundertank barrels through, they have to rebuild. So they’ve decided to put the Thundercats out of commission.  Meanwhile, Snarf has gotten worried and has gone out alone to look for Lion-O.  Isn’t this just asking for trouble?  Anyway, the Micrits are making good on their word.  They quickly steal all the weapons in Cat’s Lair, sabotage the Thundertank, and steal part of the Thundrillium reactor.  Cat’s Lair becomes virtually powerless.  They have a small reserve of backup power, but it won’t last. About this time, Vultureman checks up on the felines with the scanners at Castle Plun-Darr and finds the Lair powerless.  Slithe decides this is worth investigating, though Vultureman believes it to be just a power glitch.  So the mutants creep in and when the Lair still shows no activity, they attack.  Inside the Lair, the Thundercats are trying to figure out what’s going on, they’re wondering where Snarf and Lion-O are, and they mutants attack.  Problems.  The Thundercats try to fight back, but the Lair just doesn’t have anymore power and they have no weapons.  Meanwhile, Lion-O is trying to convince the Micrits to let  him go when Snarf shows up.  Snarf manages to free the Sword of Omens and Lion-O calls the other Thundercats, but they’re fighting the mutants.  They can’t help.  Oh, and Snarf kind of remembers that he saw the Nosediver fly by earlier.  I’m really pitying the Thundercats at this point.  Anyway, Lion-O convinces the Micrit leader to let him go as long as he leaves a hostage in his place: Snarf.  This is where things get funny.  So Lion-O takes off and leaves Snarf as a prisoner! It’s great!  Oh, and Lion-O grabs all the stolen gear, too.  Anyway, the mutants are chasing the Thundercats through the Lair and trying to kill them.  Actually, no.  They’re not.  They’re chasing Tygra and Cheetara through the Lair.  Panthro is taking it easy in the Sword Chamber and wondering where all the action is, and Kit and Kat are hiding from Slithe in the Control Room.  Tygra and Cheetara are trying to outwit Vultureman and Jackalman. Lion-O to the rescue.  He gets everyone their weapons (not that Panthro or the kittens needed them) and they drive the mutants out.  Thundercats win again!  Oh, and he also retrieves Snarf.  I was kind of hoping he’d forget about him, but no.  And then they put up signs to show where the Micrits live.  And all our heroes, both big and little, are happy.

The Mountain

This one definitely ranks in there as one of my all-time favorite episodes.  Great characterization, VERY good use of facial expressions, believable plot, nice voice acting, and Tygra has a fairly good part.  Slithe, Monkian, and Jackalman plan an attack on Lion-O who is mountain climbing to kill time.  The lion gets to the top of a cliff, looks back, and all of a sudden, the mutants pop out of a cave behind him and proceed to fire Thundranium at him.  Lion-O tries to call the other Thundercats, realizes he’s being pummeled with Thundranium, and in a feat of strength, manages to get the last of the Thundercat call out.  Very good voice acting for that part, by the way.  Panthro and Tygra are out in the Tank and come to the rescue. But before they can get there, the mutants shoot down the Thundercat signal.  Oops.  Panthro and Tygra decide to really hustle, but will they get there in time?  The mutants think not and demand that Lion-O hand over the Sword.  They’ve got him cornered on a cliff, they’re closing in, he’s weak from Thundranium, and then Panthro and Tygra jump in behind.  They distract Slithe and Monkian, but Jackalman proceeds to attack Lion-O until the lion is practically falling off the cliff.  Tygra and Panthro try to get to him, but the jackal is effectively holding him hostage.  Tygra and Panthro back up, the mutants advance, and then Lion-O shows he still has some fight left when Jackalman lunges and the lion battles back.  Tygra and Panthro start to fight, Jackalman and Lion-O almost tumble off the cliff, Tygra tries to save them but Slithe fires so many Thundranium shots that both Tygra and Panthro are forced to take cover in the cave.  Unfortunately, all the shots also cause an avalanche.  Slithe and Monkian are forced into the cave with the other two Thundercats and Lion-O and Jackalman tumble off the cliff.  Good falling scene, Lion-O and Jackalman hit the water, Lion-O forces Jackalman away, and the mutant is swept away toward a waterfall.  He yells for help, Lion-O hesitates, and then decides to save the idiot.  But when he tries to save the jackal, once again the mutant tries to steal the Sword.  So they both go off the waterfall.  Jackalman makes it intact, but Lion-O is knocked cold.  The mutant steals the Sword and starts back to his comrades.  And what of his comrades?  Well, they’re still stuck in the cave.  Tygra realizes there’s no air supply and manages to get everyone to agree to a truce.  Panthro and Tygra try digging out of the cave while the mutants take a “breather” that stretches into most of the episode.  Meanwhile, Lion-O wakes up, realizes the Sword is gone, sees Jackalman high above him on the cliff, and starts climbing after him.  Back to the cave.  The air supply is running out and the two workers are tiring.  Slithe and Monkian couldn’t help if they wanted to because there’s so little air.  Back outside to Jackalman who finds the clogged cave and hollers for Slithe and Monkian.  No response because by this time, everyone in the cave is unconscious.  Jackalman tries to use the Sword to get them out, but no go.  And at this point, Lion-O climbs over the cliff and confronts Jackalman.  Again.  Jackalman tries to kill Lion-O with the Sword, the Sword goes crazy, and eventually, Lion-O gets it back.  Yea!  He blasts through the cave and finds everybody who then wake up.  Yea.  Time to go home.  Or is it?  Nope, the mutants have another card up their proverbial sleeve.  They turn the Thundranium guns on and…looks like they’re out of ammo.  Tygra and Panthro have stolen the cartridges for the guns.  Enough for one day, the mutants high tail it for home.  Chalk up another victory for the Thundercats.

Eye of the Beholder

The Mumm-Ra Berbil

Mumm-Ra has this great new idea to trap the Thundercats.  It’s a little odd, but then most of Mumm-Ra’s schemes are.  Mumm-Ra is going to impersonate a Berbil.  Yes, this is problematic already, but no one said being evil was easy.  Mumm-Ra becomes a Berbil, finds a convenient tree in which to wait, and then falls out on top of Snarf.  He pretends he’s hurt and a rather indignant Snarf takes him back to Cat’s Lair for treatment.  The Thundercats fix him up and let him stay in the Lair for the night.  Once they all leave, Mumm-Ra gives an evil laugh and sets to work.  He now transforms into this big orange thing called an energy bat.  I don’t quite see the bat resemblance but whatever.  Anyway, he gets into the control room where Panthro is on watch (and falling asleep, I might add).  Panthro is rather startled to see this big orange ball of static electricity, but he tries to fight it.  Unfortunately for the Thundercats, Panthro loses and he gets this neat little bracelet on his wrist that puts him under Mumm-Ra’s spell.  So now Panthro is Mumm-Ra’s slave.  Next we go to the kittens’ room.  They’ve created a tent on one of the beds and are playing jacks because Lion-O is also sleeping outdoors and they figure they should be able to camp, too.  Why is Lion-O sleeping outdoors?  Who can say.  I certainly can’t.  Anyway, Panthro comes in and tips the bed over.  The kittens are surprised and then Mumm-Ra makes an appearance.  Panthro throws the neat little bracelets and Kit and Kat become slaves, too.  Meanwhile, all the racket has awakened Cheetara who decides to investigate.  She walks in on Panthro and the kids who pretend everything is normal until Mumm-Ra appears again.  About then, Cheetara can see for herself that all is not normal, but it’s too late.  Four down, three to go.  During all this time, Snarf is wandering around being suspicious.  He bumps into Tygra who seems to be equally suspicious but doesn’t want to admit it yet.  The two separate and Snarf checks up on the Berbil.  Surprise!  The Berbil isn’t there and Snarf hears Mumm-Ra laughter.  The frightened snarf bolts out of the room, down some stairs, and crashes into Tygra.  Tygra reveals that everyone seems to be missing and Snarf fills him in on the Berbil. Our crafty tiger realizes the Berbil was probably Mumm-Ra and the two start searching the Lair, not really knowing what else to do.  And guess who they find!  Mumm-Ra! Tygra tells Snarf to beat it while he holds the mummy off, so Snarf runs, gets past the other Thundercats, and starts looking for Lion-O.  In the meantime, Mumm-Ra and the other Thundercats have overpowered Tygra and he becomes a slave, too.  Bad deal.  Anyway, Snarf finds Lion-O and briefs the lion on the situation.  Lion-O decides to head back to the Lair where he and Snarf split up to search for everyone.  Bad idea.  Snarf is captured and everyone advances on poor Lion-O.  The lion runs for it, but Mumm-Ra follows.  Finally, in an act of desperation, Lion-O uses the Sword of Omens and calls the other Thundercats.  They manage to break free of Mumm-Ra’s spell and rush to the rescue.  Yea.  The day is saved.  Mumm-Ra is vanquished.  Did I say “yea” already?  Yea.

Trouble With Thunderkittens

Mumm-Rana

Trapped

This is a pretty good episode, but it’s disjointed enough that it probably should have been made into two episodes, instead.  For that, it’s only average.  We start off with a nasty storm and Cheetara and Tygra in the Feliner.  The Feliner’s been damaged in the storm and they’re concerned that they won’t be able to land.  Panthro decides he’s going to try and talk them in.  In the meantime, Snarf is concerned about the Thunderkittens who are also out in the storm somewhere.  They haven’t checked in.  Lion-O tries Sight Beyond Sight, but the storm is putting out so much energy that the Sword is blocked.  We now switch over to the Thunderkittens as they try and seek refuge.  They find an old suspension capsule and climb in.  Wiley Kit decides they should call Cat’s Lair and tell them what’s happened.  Kat is reluctant, but gives in.  Unfortunately, the suspension capsule blocks their communicators and when they try to get out, they find themselves trapped inside.  Kit boosts the powers on her communicator and manages to get through to Lion-O in the Lair, but her signal quickly fades out.  All Lion-O can gather is that they’re trapped in a suspension capsule but he doesn’t know where.  Oh, and Lion-O wasn’t the only one listening to Kit.  Vultureman picked up the signal and managed to get Wiley Kit’s position.  Slithe is sent to capture the Thunderkittens.  Meanwhile at the Lair, Snarf and Lion-O have decided to take the Thundertank to the old crash site and look for capsules.  But there’s a problem.  When they open the paw and start to drive the Lair out, falling rocks from the storm slam the paw down and the Thundertank becomes stuck.  No go.  And some rocks also destroy the drawbridge.  Without the Tank, the Cats can’t get across.  Back to Cheetara and Tygra.  They’re still having major problems and keep getting blown off course.  Panthro tells them to go to full burn in an attempt to stabilize the Feliner, but their engines blow out.  Over to Kit and Kat.  They keep hoping someone will come to their rescue, but when a face appears in their capsule window, they are anything but relieved.  Slithe has arrived.  He tows the capsule back to Castle Plun-Darr where he and the mutants try to break it open.  So now we jump back to the Lair where Lion-O goes to tell Panthro what’s happened with the Tank but soon discovers bigger problems.  Without maneuvering thrusters, the Feliner is completely out of control and when lightning hits the Feliner completely takes out communications.  Tygra and Cheetara are as good as gone.  So Snarf muses something about the Sword of Omens and Lion-O decides to give it a try.  He sends up the Cat Signal and it guides the Feliner to a safe landing.  Happy reunions abound until someone remembers the kittens are still in danger.  Examining the trapped Tank, Tygra decides to rig an explosive system that will blow the paw door.  They give it a try and it works.  So everyone piles into the freed Tank, they jump the moat, and they’re off.  The storm conveniently clears up and Lion-O can see that Kit and Kat are at Castle Plun-Darr.  What he doesn’t see, though, is what happens next.  Mumm-Ra shows up and steals the kittens, who are still inside the capsule.  But fortunately for our heroes, they see Mumm-Ra flying away from Plun-Darr.  Lion-O sends up a rope from his Claw Shield, latches onto Mumm-Ra, and flies to the Black Pyramid with the Tank not far behind.  When Mumm-Ra lands, there’s a pretty good battle.  It looks like the mummy might actually win until the Thunderkittens decided to step in.  They’re still in the capsule, but they’re not defenseless.  They chew some shiny bubble gum, call Mumm-Ra over, and the mummy sees his reflection.  The Thundercats win.  Or have they?  They get the capsule back to the Lair, but they still can’t get it open.  They’re going through all kinds of possible solutions until Snarf steps up and gives the capsule a good kick.  It pops open, much to everyone’s relief, and Snarf is proclaimed a hero.  Sigh.  So much for an ending.
