The head of the family begins the
ceremony by sanctifying the holiday with
a benediction (Kiddish) over a cup of
wine.

The master of the seder
presents celery, dipped in vinegar or
salt to all, then a shank bone (symbolic
of the Paschal lamb) and a hard boiled
egg (symbolic of God's loving kindness).
After, they recite a prayer, the
youngest asks four questions.

1. Why does this night differ from all
others? Why on this night do we eat
only unleavened bread?
A. To remind us of when our anscestors
did not have time to let their bread
rise, it was baked in the sun.

2. Why on all other nights do we use
all kinds of herbs and tonight only
bitter herbs?
A. To remind us of the bitter cruel way
our anscestors were treated.

3. On all other nights, we need not dip
our herbs, why this night must we dip
them?
A. We dip our food into a vinegar
mixture to remind us of how hard our
ancestors worked while building Pharoh's
buildings. We dip our greens into salt
water to remind us of their tears.

4. On all other nights, we eat either
sitting up or reclining; on this night,
why do we all recline?
A. To be comfortable and to remind us
once we were slaves, now we are free.
