If Jamie is my 7th grade personality, then Ziyal is my current personality. She has her own style and is a bit of a loner, but most definitely a rebellious young adult. Like her father, she has a great respect for order, but tends to get tired of people (especially her mother) telling her what she can and cannot do. Because of this, she sometimes comes across as moody, but is actually as fun-loving as the rest of the group.
After the Dominion War, the Federation was still leary of the Founders. So, when Ziyal was born (or rather discovered as I originally envisioned that Nerys never knew she was pregnant), she wasn't completely accepted by her peers. As a result, she became determined to prove herself and joined Starfleet shortly after hearing that a seven-year-old Klingon had joined two years previously. Through her academy years, she rarely heard of the other three, never coming into contact with them, and spent most of her time mascarading as a Bajoran woman in her early twenties as to not draw attention to herself.
Ziyal's mother has been the main authority in her life and has laid down two main rules for her: no shapeshifting on the prominade and no visiting the Gama Quadrant. This is mainly because Nerys has a fear of Ziyal wanting to go to the Founder's homeworld as Odo had.
