Temperatures well below zero with some good sized wind chills attached to them have people complaining about heating costs, cars that won’t start, and how their fingers just don’t seem to want to move. In fact, it seems the warmer temperatures didn’t come until after the snow.
Sledders and snowboarders have been a rarity, though a couple days of freezing rain have produced some unwilling ice-skaters and also a few bumps and bruises. A few snow forts have been constructed, and a snowman or two has made an appearance, but with the even warmer temperatures we’ve been having, including the 45 degree day we had at the beginning of this month, have left the forts in disrepair and the snowmen looking slightly worn out.
It would seem our odd little winter is coming to an end. A few more freezing days have been promised by the weather stations, but the truth is, it’s mostly over. With less than two months left of winter, many people are anticipating the slush and mud which has already begun to appear. Others are still wondering just how much more snow and ice we’ll be getting.
All in all, this hasn’t been too bad of a winter. Many households never even got their snowblowers out, and some haven’t shoveled their sidewalks. The recent snowfall has a few complaining about the cold and ice, but this is typical Iowa winter weather so most of us are used to it.
Currently, one of the main points of focus is the weather, but no matter what our complaints or wishes are at the moment, fairly soon we’ll be thinking of spring and summer activities. Even a month ago, the spring play, Music Trip to New York City, and Prom seemed so far away, but now it doesn’t seem like there’s much time left. As always, the weather will change along with what we’re doing.
