New Year's Parties

As the darkness rolls in, so do the guests. The food tables become littered with errant napkins and spilled food, and before you know it, the music is blaring, and people are laughing and playing games. This is the standard beginning for many parties, but at this time of year, the parties have a few little added extras.

New Year's parties are notorious for dancing, drinking, and watching the ball fall from Time Square in New York City, whether in person or by way of television. Some couples even share a New Year? kiss while others, possibly because of the influence of alcohol, will settle for the nearest moving object. Over the years, all of this has become tradition, and each year there is someone who tries to outdo the previous year.

In Humboldt, it would be a rarity to have a party as big or elaborate as some that may be going on in other areas such as Los Angeles or New York City. We don't have people crowding out onto Main Street for midnight festivities or many indoor areas which could hold a large amount of people. There are some moderate sized parties, but nothing overly huge.

Most parties in this area are small ones for just friends and family, though some businesses may also have parties for their employees. Generally just a small group of friends with gather in one of their houses to play games, eat, and watch movies or the special New Year's commentary from New York or Paris or Sydney. Though it becomes the new year at midnight, the parties usually last much longer.

The next morning after all the guests have left, the host of the party is often left with a clutter of dishes, leftover food, and, in general, a mess. A few different surprises may cause them to groan and question the sanity of their friends, but by the next year, they're usually once again planning a get-together of some sort to celebrate in whatever way they can. It may be a disaster area afterwards, but the party is worth it.
