Just as with everything else, the music department has gone through a few changes for the new school year. Instead of two choral classes at the high school, there are now three: Men? Chorus, Women? Chorus, and Concert Chorale, all directed by Mr. Mike Blair. New requirements for Concert Chorale have also been implemented, and students are required to take at least one year of Men's or Women's Chorus or be a Junior or Senior to be in Concert Chorale. Also available are the All-State and Jazz Choirs and the fall musical.
On Saturday, October 26, Mr. Blair took a few students to the Storm Lake high school to audition for the All-State Choir. In the group were Phyllis Albertz, Dan Blair, Laura Blair, Cassie McCullough, Andy Erickson, Brian Gorman, Marielle Hendren, Brian Johnson, Andy Owen, Amanda Runia, and Rachel Wiener. Dan Blair, Laura Blair, and Brian Johnson made it into All-State Choir. Nick Adams, Ben Baldus, Sarah Baldus, Dan Dvorak, Chris Fink, Sarah Freund, Wes Kocher, Andrew Patz, Ricky Phillips, Anne Stockdale, and Sarah Wickett auditioned for the All-State Band, with Ben Baldus, Sarah Baldus, and Sarah Wickett accepted. On November 22 and 23, these six students will be going to Ames to practice for the All-State Festival including the All-State Choir, Band, and Orchestra. They will rehearse both days, and the final concert will be on the 23rd.
This year, music students at Humboldt High School will be going on the music trip, which is planned every three years. The destination this year is New York City, and a variety of activities have been planned for the attending students. Those who are going will be leaving after school on Wednesday April 2 and will return sometime on Sunday April 6. While in New York, students have the chance to view popular tourist attractions and even watch a Broadway musical. The three musicals offered to students are Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Stomp.
Music students are enthused about another year of performing. Many of them have added their talents to the fall musical, currently in the final stages of production. Others are already practicing for music festivals and other performances in the future such as the Solo and Small Ensemble Contest, Soundsations, and Pre-Prom Entertainment.
