Dark Forrest
The Gingerbread House
by Mandy
He thought he heard a whisper.
Under the cover of darkness he creeps, he's curious to know if she foundthe present that he left her.
It woke him from his nightmare.
Stealthy, ever so stealthy, he follows the trail to the clearing, smilingin anticipation of her fury during the next phone call.
Something was wrong in the night.
Pretty ribbons with careful bows, it sat untouched. He wonders at this, the trail of breadcrumbs he left should have been a blatant invitation..
He listened hard, he thought he heard…
He moves on, looking for clues. He doesn't like what he finds. Blood.Broken branches. Her ring.
"I love you."
He feels sick as he follows the trail of blood, someone has draggedthemselves in the direction of the road. Still he refuses to admit to himselfwhat happened.
Another part of his dreams?
He's always dreamed of her saying those words.
The trail ends, he finds her. Broken and bloody, tears still fresh onher cheeks, her body still warm.
Again he hears a whisper, it puts fear in his heart.
His scream of anguish echoes through the forrest, he doesn't noticeas he falls to his knees.
He's sure it's her who whispers…
Too many tricks, no time to apologise, this trap for her was designedby him, the executioner a coincidence. He holds her lifeless body untilshe is cold, knowing he has lost his soul with her.
"Goodbye."
