I sighed as I looked around. This place was sucking already. Everytime I tried to talk to somebody they just gave me a dirty look or blew me off. I guess that I'll just have to be a loner. As I was thinking a teenage girl who was African American and dark braided hair walked over to me. "Hi, I'm Kat." She introduced herself. "I'm Laney, it's nice to meet you." "So you're the new girl in the cliff hangers, right?" "Yeah, are you in the cliff hangers too?" "Yes, I am." "Good, you're the only person who doesn't think that I have an infectious disease so far. I mean first I met Shelby, then I tried talking to this blonde haired guy and he totally blew me off." She laughed at my comment about the infectious disease. "Well, actually, Shelby is always a stuck up little....ah... brat should I say? And that guy was Scott, he's pretty cool but he's dealing with a lot right now. It's time for lunch we better get over there." "All right." I replied as we walked over to the cafeteria area. I sat with Kat at the table and we became quick friends. "So, if you don't mind me asking, what did you get sent here for?" Kat questioned.I shrugged my shoulders. "You know some time you are going to have to talk." I just shrugged again. "Maybe in time, but I don't even know why I'm at this freak place." "This is a good school." "Yeah, real good. I can't have a drink or a smoke at all." "You don't need it, you know." "Whatever... look I'm going back to the dorm." "No, you have to help with clean up." I stood up and walked over to Peter, he assigned me to pots and pans with a Latino looking guy. I tossed my auburn hair up into a sloppy pony tail. I began to clean hoping to get to my room as soon as possible. But my eyes kept wandering to the guy standing next to me. "Hi, I'm Auggie." He introduced. "Welcome to the cliff hangers." "I'm Laney." I replied as I began to scrub a pot. "This place sucks pretty bad, huh?" "When you first get here it seems like that. But it's better than where most of us are from." I nodded. "That's understandable, but I'd rather be on the streets." I sighed continuing to clean pots. "Have you ever been on the streets because if you were you wouldn't joke about that." "I lived on the streets for half of my life." I said but cut myself off before I could say more. I stayed silent for the rest of clean up and knew that I had to be careful or else I might open up to one of theses freaks here, and that was the last thing that I wanted.
