The Duel Gundam was the base design used by the Earth Forces. It is one of the original five created at Heliopolis. Used as a model for the Buster, Blitz, and Strike; the Duel's original design was fairly basic. It resembles the lone Gundam from the original MSG series more than any of the other ones here at first. It specialized in close range combat, but having two beam sabers isn't exactly something too shocking usually. It also carries the traditional vulcan guns, though I hardly ever see them being used. It has a shield for added defense, and a beam rifle for long range combat. In addition, there is a small scope on the rifle. This design, like the other Gundams in this series, uses Phase Shift armor. The Gundam goes from a gray color to the standard look, and gains quite a bit more power. Beam weapons can't used while the phase shift armor is disengaged, and conventional ballistic weapons can't do any immediate harm to the suit. They'll eventually take their toll and drain the Gundam of it's phase shift energy, but it won't take any collateral damage until that point. Beam weaponary still works just fine against the suits in phase shift armor though. Thats a bonus for the shield, which is very convenient to defend against those pesty beams. Shortly into the series, before the war moves to the Earth front for the main cast, the Duel is upgraded to with Shroud Armor, developed by ZAFT. This added extra armored plating to the suit, improving it's defense. At the same time, an extra cannon was mounted on the right shoulder, while a missile pod launcher than could shoot off five at a time was placed on the left. These additions make the Duel seem more like a heavy fire support model instead.
