Jason & Sam #3  September 20 - December 14, 2004 - 8 hr original edit

Sonny demands that Jason get her to sign the papers, but a later visit from Sam only makes the situation worse. She yells at Sonny for his controlling ways, and tells him that he cannot buy her child away from her. Sonny tries to explain that he simply wants a legal right to the baby, but Sam won't let him steamroll over her. Jason interrupts the two in the middle of their fight, and both turn to him for support. Jason declares that he's had enough. Sonny tries to force him to make Sam sign the documents, but Jason tells her she doesn't have to sign anything. Sonny and Jason begin to fight, and Sam tells them she doesn't want them at each other's throats because of her.

Sam leaves the men to finish discussing the situation, and Jason implores Sonny to for once back off and not frighten Sam into running away with the unborn baby. Jason returns to his penthouse to find Sam gone and a note in her place. He tracks her down to Kelly's, where Bobby has refused to rent her a room, and he tells her that he doesn't want to be the reason she stays or goes. He explains that he can take care of things with Sonny, and he wants to help her. Sam happily decides to stay and let Jason take care of her.

Outside Kelly's, Courtney sees Jax coming and grabs Jason and kisses him. Courtney suddenly realizes that Jason is shocked by the kiss she planted on him. Jason pushes Courtney away and demands to know what she is doing. Courtney tries to apologize by explaining about her bet with Jax, but Jason appears shocked when he learns that Courtney kissed Jason because of a bet with Jax. Courtney is upset when Jason stiffly hustles Samantha away from the scene. Jason and Sam arrive home and Sam tries to get Jason to share his feelings with her, but Jason gives Sam the brush off. However, Sam keeps after Jason to talk about his feelings until Jason angrily orders Sam to just drop the subject. When Jason insists that he is completely over Courtney, Sam suggests that Courtney kissed Jason only to make Jax jealous.

Sonny arrives at Jason's and announces that 'We have a problem.' Sonny explains to Jason that the mob prosecutor, John Durant, is Carly's biological father. When Sonny explains that Durant apparently conducted a conclusive DNA test on Carly, Jason suggests that they should get a second test done, but Sonny confides that he believes it would be impossible to get Durant to sit still for such an undertaking. Sonny tells Jason that Sonny is convinced that they need to get Carly's father out of their lives.

Jason arrives at The Cellar to see Durant hugging Carly. After Durant leaves, Jason phones a report in to Sonny. Later, Jason meets with Carly and tries to convince Carly to stay away from Durant. Carly tells Jason about her father. Jason warns her not to put too much trust in what Durant says to her since he most likely is trying to bring down Sonny and him instead. Carly has a hard time just letting go of the idea of having a relationship with her father and tells Jason that John may be telling the truth and only wants to get to know her.

Jason goes back to his penthouse and tells Sam about John Durant being a federal prosecutor and Carly's father. Sam worries that Carly will end up saying something to John that could hurt Sonny eventually. Jason agrees with her that John is dangerous to Sonny and his organization. Sam tells Jason that he goes out on the line for Sonny all the time and that Sonny takes him for granted and that he treats him like dirt in return. Jason defends Sonny's honor and tells her that Sonny is very loyal but can come across as too controlling at times. He tells Sam that Sonny will eventually do right by her child. Sam tells Jason that the words he described just now sounded like those that belonged to the perfect father and that isn't Sonny but Jason himself.

Jason warns John to stay away from Carly, but John refuses to buy into his intimidations. John tells him that while Sonny is his son in law, Jason means nothing to him and John vows to take him down if he gets in the way of his relationship with Carly. Carly overhears the men's exchange, and warns John herself. She tells her father that Jason protects her from everything, including herself, and she has far more trust and faith in him than she ever will in her father. Jason excuses himself to take Michael home, but Carly continues to tell John she has doubts about a future for the two of them. John tries to explain the situation, but Carly can't be sure she can trust him. She turns to Steven for advice, telling him a father she could count on was a dream she's had since she was a child. She asks Steven to be honest with her and tell her the truth about what John is after. Before he can, however, Jason returns and orders Steven away from Carly. Carly tells Jason he was out of line, but Jason continues to warn her to keep as far from Steven and John as she can.

At the hospital, as John and Michael look on, Carly orders Jason to tell Michael that Jason's problem is with Durant's job and not with John himself. However, Jason refuses. Sonny arrives in the middle of the argument, and Michael immediately tattles that John wants to put Sonny in prison and Jason agrees with Michael's report about Durant's intentions. Later, Michael asks Jason to continue warning Carly about Durant and Jason promises that he will continue attempting to persuade Carly. Jason later runs into Bobbie and Bobbie confirms that she was always pretty sure that Durant was Carly's father and confides that Durant paid Bobbie a visit. Bobbie fills Jason in on the details of Bobbie's meeting with Durant and Jason points out that the timing of Durant's visit to Bobbie changes everything.

Sonny and Carly track Jason down to send Jason to collect Michael at Courtney's apartment, but Jason refuses, admitting that he believes that Michael is right about refusing to return home until Durant is out of their lives for good. Jason points out that Durant went to Bobbie after Carly had already told Durant that Carly wanted nothing to do with Durant. Carly retorts that Jason's suspicions have been brought about by the fact that Jason does not love his own father. Carly immediately apologizes, but Jason coldly declares that he will go fetch Michael. Courtney is surprised when it is Jason who arrives to pick Michael up.

Jax runs into Sam at GH, she had just talked to Steven about how Morgan is doing. He tells her that Morgan has been released from the hospital and that he hasn't seen Jason in a couple of hours. Jax tells her he just saw Jason at Courtney's and it looked like they may get back together again. Sam acts like it doesn't bother her but she gets home and sits in the dark waiting for Jason to get home. Jason takes Michael home and tells him it is time for bed. Carly apologizes to Jason for what she said to him earlier at the hospital about his own estranged relationship with his father but wants him to stop trash talking her father to Michael anymore. Jason agrees not to talk about John to Michael anymore. Jason reassures Sam that he and Courtney aren't back together and that she can live there as long as she wants.

Courtney and Sam ran into each other on the docks, were friendly with each other and decided they should remain that way. Later, an older woman approached Sam and chastised her for being single and pregnant. Jason overheard the conversation and appeared in time to pretend to be Sam's husband and keep her from being embarrassed. Alcazar warned Sonny and Jason about Durant's plans. Sonny was not interested in working with Alcazar against Durant, though. Carly visited with Durant to thank him for the family album. She learned that his mother had

Convinced that John Durant is only out to get Sonny, Jason continues his search for information. He asks Liz about her brother's motives for being in Port Charles, and what he's specifically doing with the PCPD. When she can't offer him much information, Jason asks her if she knows about John. She says no, and Steven walks up to warn Jason to leave Liz alone. Liz informs her brother that Jason is her friend, but lets the two men finish the discussion without her.

Meanwhile, Sam hounds Sonny to make his wife give up on a relationship with her father before it hurts them all. Sonny tells her that it's none of her business, but Sam lets him know that she plans to make anyone who is a threat to Jason her business. She annoys Sonny by demanding he take action to protect Jason, and she refuses to back down regardless of what Sonny wants.

Sonny shows Carly and Jason a picture that Michael drew on the back of a sheet of Sonny's letterhead with a letter about a shipment that does NOT exist. Sonny suggests that Carly take Michael's drawing to Durant and see if Durant notices the letter on the back and pounces on the non-existent shipment. Jason argues that, since they already know that John is in town to make a bust, the 'test' will be pointless. Carly argues that she just wants to give Durant a chance to prove that he sincerely wants a relationship with his daughter. Jason storms away.

Jason meets with Durant and offers to give Durant information about activities of rival mobsters in Chicago and Miami in exchange for Durant telling Carly that John is no longer interested in getting to know his daughter. Durant reminds Jason that if Sonny's competition in Chicago and Miami knew that Jason was ratting them out to a Federal Prosecutor, Jason would be dead by morning. Jason is surprised when Durant turns down Jason's offer, insisting again that John has no plans to try to use his own daughter to send Carly's husband to prison. Jason accuses Durant of being too interested in arresting Sonny to go after bigger game, and storms away. Jason returns and reports to Sonny that Durant turned down the chance to bring down major mob figures in Chicago and Miami, so Durant's only target is Sonny. Jason warns Sonny that Sonny may have to be the one who kills Carly's father in order to protect Sonny's family.

Jason tells Carly that she wants John to fit into the scenario she has mapped out for him to be, which is this loving father who will ignore Sonny to be what she wants him to be when the reality is different. Sonny tells Carly that his shipment was not intercepted by Durant or the cops. This raises Carly's hopes up that her father could be trustworthy and really care about her. Jason disagrees which upsets Carly. Carly asks Sonny if she will be allowed to see her father anymore if it proves he isn't after Sonny at all.

An explosion rocks one of Sonny's warehouses, which Durant makes appear to have been Lorenzo's doing. Jason and Sonny, however, suspect Durant, which upsets Carly.

Carly tearfully tells her father that she can't have a relationship with him because of his job. She lets him know how happy she is to have met him, and how much it meant to her, but then she rushes out of his apartment, and apparently his life. Jason is hiding in the back and overhears the conversation. Later he goes to Sonny and lets him know what Carly did. Carly interrupts them, and expecting to be blasted by Sonny, she admits to going to see John against his wishes. But she tells him she went to end her relationship with her father, and Sonny believes her. Jason leaves the couple alone.

In the park, Jason overhears as John and Steven discuss having Alcazar on a leash and Steven assures Durant that John has Steven's full support. John admits that, although he is becoming attached to his long-lost daughter, John cannot let his feelings for Carly stand in the way of doing his job. After John leaves, Jason confronts Steven and demands answers. Steven insists that he is only in town to get to know his sister better, but Jason suspiciously insists that it is strange that Steven and Durant both showed up in town at the same time and seem to spend a lot of time together. Jason asks if John and Steven were arguing because Steven objects to Durant working Carly for evidence that would put Sonny away. Steven insists that he felt he needed a positive recommendation from Durant to get a job in Port Charles. However, when Steven leaves, Steven urges Jason to caution Carly about getting hurt.

Diego tries to mug Jason, but Diego quickly finds himself on the receiving end of Jason's anger. Steven hears the scuffle and returns in time to tend to Diego's injuries. When Diego brags that he is a good friend of mob-boss Sonny Corinthos, Steven lets Diego know that the boy just tried to mug Sonny's partner. Diego insists that everything will be okay if they just call Diego's new foster mother, Courtney Matthews! Later, when Courtney returns home, she finds Jason and Diego waiting for her. Diego claims that he saw Jason's gun and was trying to take the gun away from Jason. Diego declares that he wants to work for Jason, but Courtney puts her foot down and says 'no way.' Courtney tells Diego that he needs to stay in school if he wants a chance at a decent future, but Diego argues: "Who wants to be decent when you can be rich and powerful?" However, Jason flatly announces that there is no job and that Diego would be wise to do what Courtney tells him to do without giving Courtney any trouble. Before Jason leaves, Courtney thanks her ex for his help and Jason warns Courtney that she may have bitten off more than she can chew with Diego.

Carly meets with Jason at Kelly's. Jason tells Carly that if she wants to really see her father she should tell Sonny and warns her not to sneak around to see Durant behind their backs. Later, Durant warned Jason not to interfere where Carly was concerned, or he might have to make it look like Courtney's foundation has mob money flowing through it. Sonny did not take this threat seriously, but he did ask Jason to attend the press conference.

John calls Carly to the podium during his press conference, and a livid Carly finds herself with no choice but to oblige her father's wishes and pretend to be enjoying the situation. She heads toward him and he pulls her into an embrace. As he releases and she steps back, shots ring out and everyone falls to the ground. Lana, Alcazar's hired hit woman, successfully shoots John in the chest and immediately disposes of her gun in Jason's coat pocket. Jason, meanwhile has rushed to help Carly, but finds that she is unhurt. Carly begs her dad to hold on, and they rush him to GH. Jason prepares to follow her, but first grabs his jacket and realizes that a gun has been planted in it. At the same moment, Lucky and the PCPD grab him. They take the gun from him and place him under arrest. Jason's escorted to the station.

At the police station, Jason is hauled toward an interrogation room, but Sam's unexpected arrival and tumble to the ground in the mad crush of people causes Jason to run to her aid. Mac allows Jason to help Sam and make sure that she's ok, but he then has him throw into the interrogation room. Justus arrives, and after convincing Jason to allow him to serve as legal counsel, he warns Mac that there is no evidence to hold Jason. While Sam sits with Jason, Justus manages to get him released based on the fact that the gun seems to likely be planted. Sam and Jason share a warm moment together and he thanks her for staying with him and caring. When Jason is released and arrives at GH, Carly tearfully confronts him about shooting her father. Jason is stunned that she would believe such a thing. He reminds her that he would never put her in danger, and he explains that he was setup. Carly apologizes to him, and tells him she knows he'd never hurt her.

Steven has Carly sent back to John's room once he's in recovery, and goes to confront Jason himself. He warns Jason that he'll be doing forensics on the case, and will happily lock him away if the evidence proves he shot John. Jason denies any wrongdoing, and Sam enters the hospital in time to lay into Steven and tell him to leave Jason alone or they'll sue. Steven laughs her off and leaves. Jason again implores Sam to stop following him and coming to his defense, but she refuses to stop worrying about him.

A maid at Durant’s hotel reported overhearing Jason threatening Durant (this was after Durant had threatened to harm Courtney’s reputation and her foundation). Jason is brought back into police custody for questioning. Ric questions Jason about what the maid told them she overheard. Jason refuses to speak to Ric without his lawyer present. Courtney overhears their conversation while she is waiting for Jax to be released himself. Courtney approaches Jason in the interrogation room about how he threatened Durant to protect her. Jason tells her he would have shot Durant to protect her but he didn't do it. Courtney feels responsible somehow because he is in trouble for trying to protect her. Jason asks her to stay out of it and return to her new life.

Sonny finds Sam drilling Jason with questions about the day of the shooting. Jason asks Sam to wait outside while he discusses business with Sonny. Sonny and Jason discuss the shooting. Sonny suspects Alcazar is behind the shooting. Jason remembers seeing a woman talking to Alcazar and that the same woman was there at the press conference. They realize she probably was hired by Alcazar to shoot and kill Durant and frame them for murder but that he almost stepped in when he saw Carly come up to the podium but it was too late to stop the shooting.

Durant comes forward to clear Jason to score points with Carly. Jason returned to his apartment to find Sam and Michael together. Sam overheard Michael tell Jason that it would be okay if Jason fell in love with her. Jason and Sam attempt to explain their situation to Michael after he approves of their relationship. Jason explains that he and Sam are friends, but that Jason is going to help her raise her daughter. Michael asks if Jason is the baby's father, and Jason is surprised to realize that Michael doesn't know that Sonny is the biological father. Sam is incredulous when Michael tells them that Sonny explained it to him awhile back, but that he thought tests changed things. Jason tells Michael that Sonny is the baby's father, and apologizes for not making it clear to him sooner. Sam then asks that Michael be a good brother to her daughter, and Michael agrees.

After Michael leaves, Sam rants about the fact that Sonny and Carly didn't explain the situation to Michael, but Jason reminds her that it wasn't the easiest thing to deal with and probably was better for him to be the one to explain it. He tells her that Carly was obviously hurt by the situation, and that it's difficult for her to deal with it and with the fact that Jason likes Sam. Sam is clearly pleased to hear that she's liked.

When Jason and Sam arrive at the hospital for birthing class, Monica stops them with sad news. She informs them of Kristina's condition and urges Jason to be tested to see if he would be a bone marrow match for Kristina. Jason leaves to get tested, Sam confides to Monica that Jason makes her feel secure and Monica declares that she believes that Sam has been a good influence on Jason.

Later, Jason runs into Ric and is surprised when Ric asks about Sonny's attitude toward Samantha's unborn child. A suddenly suspicious Jason warns Ric not to try to use any of Sonny's children against Sonny. Meanwhile, Sam stops by Kristina's room and asks Alexis if there is anything that Sam could do to make the situation better.

Monica informs Jason and Sam that Jason is not a viable donor and that Alexis has asked to speak to Jason. When Jason arrives at Kristina's room, Alexis reminds Jason that it was Alexis who represented Jason when Jason sued for custody of Michael after the Quartermaines learned that A.J. was Michael's biological father. Ric arrives in the hallway and, overhearing part of Alexis's conversation with Jason, Ric leaps to the conclusion that Alexis is about ready to spill the beans about Kristina's paternity to Jason. Ric rushes forward, pretending that he believes that Jason is harassing Alexis. Before Alexis can 'correct' Ric's 'mistaken' assumption, Steven arrives with the news that a donor for Kristina has been found.

Alexis is relieved and tells Jason that she just wanted to thank him for having the bone-marrow test done to help Kristina. Jason leaves. He arrives at Sonny's just as Carly is about to explain and tell Sonny about Kristina being his daughter and how she knew about it. Jason's interruption stops her from telling Sonny the truth when he announces to them that they found a bone-marrow donor for Kristina. Carly tells Sonny that what she had to tell him wasn't that important and tells them she is going to go visit her father at G.H. Sonny finds the sudden change in Carly's demeanor strange but shrugs it off. Jason informs Sonny that Alcazar hijacked one of their shipments. Sonny tells Jason that Alcazar knows that he can't retaliate since Durant overheard Sonny threaten to kill Alcazar before and that if Alcazar ends up dead, he will be charged with 1st degree murder.

Alcazar shows up at Kelly's and tells Courtney he wants her to deliver a message to her brother Sonny for him. Jason shows up and tells Alcazar to leave Courtney out of Sonny's business and tell him what message he wants to give Sonny. Diego is excited to see Jason and Alcazar talking and wants to be part of that world. Alcazar tells Jason that he can do anything he wants against Sonny and that there is nothing he can do to him without being charged with murder because of his threat to him.

Jason pulls a gun on Diego and tells him he's going to die for getting in between Sonny and Alcazar and causing problems. Diego is stunned to see the gun, and begins to beg for his life. Jason tells him he has no choice but to kill him, but Diego reminds him that Courtney wouldn't want him dead and that she'll be angry with Jason for killing him. Jason agrees to spare Diego for Courtney's sake, but warns the boy again to stay away from Sonny's business. After Diego runs off, Courtney emerges from the shadows and thanks Jason for his part in scaring Diego away from the business.

Jason arrives at the penthouse and Carly prepares for a lecture on her actions. Carly tries to explain to Jason her reasons for keeping the secret of Kristina's paternity from Sonny. Carly reminds Jason of the way that Jason helped Carly keep A.J. and the Quartermaines from learning that A.J. was Michael's biological father because Jason and Carly both believed that, if A.J. was allowed to be in Michael's life, it would ruin Michael's life. But Jason points out that, since making an attempt to keep the secret that Sonny was the father of Samantha's unborn child, Jason has come to believe that keeping the secret was the wrong thing to do. Jason warns Carly that he has no plans to jump in this time and try to fix things for Carly.

When Jason, Morgan and Carly arrive at the Hospital, Samantha spots Jason and leaps to the conclusion that Jason is at the hospital to be with Sam while she has an ultrasound done for her baby. Jason apologizes for forgetting and goes with Sam, while Carly and Morgan go in search of Sonny. Jason explains to Samantha that Sonny is Kristina's father and that Carly has known the truth for months but kept the news from Sonny. Jason explains that Sonny and Carly's marriage could be on the verge of breaking up. Sam expresses her concern because of the extra lengths that Jason went to in order to insure that Sonny and Carly's marriage remained intact for the benefit of Michael and Morgan. Then Sam assures Jason that Sam has no interest in reuniting with Sonny, because Sam now believes that Sonny never really loved her. Sam apologizes because Jason got 'stuck' with Sam and her baby. However, Jason assures Sam that he does not feel 'stuck.'

Samantha and Jason consult with the obstetrician about Sam's ultrasound and learn that Sam's baby is developing normally. As they are leaving the hospital, Sam wonders if her baby might be able to provide a bone marrow transplant for Kristina, but Jason explains that the baby would need to be at least a year old before the doctors would allow her to donate bone marrow for Kristina. Sam expresses her relief, because she would hate to see a baby so small going through such a procedure. Steven informs them both that Morgan is not a match for Kristina and that Kristina could die within the next 48 hours unless a solution is discovered soon.

Jason and Sam discuss visiting her brother Danny while he is away at school after the baby is born. Jason agrees to go with her to visit Danny. They head to the hospital for a Lamaze class. Sam is excited about the arrival of her daughter after class. Sonny catches up to them at GH. He tells Sam about this new alternative treatment using the stem cells from Sam's baby's umbilical cord. Sam hears about the 10% risk to the baby for problems if the labor is induced. Sam asks Jason for his opinion. Jason tells her if it was just him to consider he would take that risk but that it's her baby at risk and she has to make that decision. Sam is torn since she wants to help Kristina but is worried about the risk to her baby. She reluctantly tells Sonny that she can't put her baby at risk.

Speaking with Jason, Sam continued to wrestle with the choice. Sonny told Alexis the news, and she freaked out, telling Sonny to make Sam do it. Later, Alexis found Sam alone in the chapel and begged for her help. The discussion was intense and highly emotional. Finally, Sam screamed out that she would help. Suddenly, she clutched her stomach in pain. Something was wrong with the baby!

Sam is wheeled into the operating room, followed by Jason and Alexis. As an unconscious Sam goes into surgery, Jason unleashes his anger at Alexis for causing Sam to collapse. Sonny is shocked when he hears the news, and he immediately blasts Alexis as well. Steven emerges from the OR and assures them all that no one is to blame for the situation, but warns that Sam has a ruptured placenta and is in serious danger. Sonny and Jason immediately ask about the baby, and Steven tells them that the baby is at risk and an emergency caesarian will have to be performed immediately. Carly tries to comfort both Jason, but he's inconsolable at the idea of Sam's baby dying. He tells Carly how Sam was so excited to be a mom, and that he promised he'd be there for her when the baby was born.

Carly tells Sonny that Sam's baby has died. Sonny shouts out in grief, and both Ric and Carly clearly feel pain for him. Jason tearfully spends a quiet moment with Sam's baby, and Liz witnesses his grief and feels pain for him. She's unable to approach him because Sonny walks up and demands to see his dead daughter. Jason emerges and refuses to allow Sonny in the room, telling him it's for the best that he not see the baby, and both men collapse against each other in tears.

A short while later, Jason returns to the operating room to sit with Sam. Jason tries to quietly explain that the baby died to an unconscious Sam. He begs her to get better, saying her daughter would want that, but the machine begins to beep and he realizes that Sam has taken a turn for the worse. Jason grows alarmed when Sam's blood pressure begins to plummet. The doctors rush into the OR and are able to stabilize her, and they move her to her room for recovery. Steven warns them, however, that she came very close to dying and he has no idea when she'll wake up. With Sam unconscious and Sonny focused on Kristina, the task of making burial arrangements for the baby falls upon Jason. He briefly discusses it with Sonny, and then takes it upon himself to have a memorial service planned for the baby girl. He tells an unconscious Sam that people will pray for her baby, and he again begs her to stay with him and wake up.

Jason urges Steven to do something to help Sam, who is still unconscious. Steven informs Jason that there is nothing that the doctors can do to bring Sam around any sooner. However, Steven admits that the longer that Sam is unconscious, the harder it will be for Sam to recover from the trauma of losing her baby. As Jason blasts Steven for not being able to do more to help Sam, Elizabeth arrives and tells Steven that he is needed at the nurses' station. After Steven leaves, Elizabeth reminds Jason that Liz had lost a baby before Cameron was born and offers Jason some advice for helping Sam through her ordeal. Liz reminds Jason that Sam probably has a ton of baby things that will need to be packed away and urges Jason to be with Sam when she does the job. When Jason suggests that he could just pack everything up before Sam returns home from the Hospital, Elizabeth warns that, if Jason took care of the packing job all alone, it would make Sam feel as if her baby had never existed. As Liz warns Jason that Sam might end up blaming herself for her baby's death, Courtney arrives and overhears the tail end of the conversation.

After Elizabeth leaves, Courtney offers Jason her sympathy and learns that Sam does not yet know that her baby is gone. Courtney reminds Jason of the way that Jason was able to help Courtney through her own ordeal when Courtney miscarried her own baby and assures Jason that she wants to help Samantha and Jason in any way that she can. Courtney reminds Jason that the experience that Jason and Sam are going through will change both of them. Courtney assures Jason again that she loves him and, before leaving, Courtney again assures Jason that she is ready to help in any way that Jason would need.

Sonny stops by Samantha's room and asks Jason about Sam's condition. When Sonny worries about being able to break the bad news to Sam about her lost baby, Sonny is surprised when Jason insists that Jason wants to be the one to tell Sam about the death of her daughter. Sonny observes that Jason has come to truly care about Sam, and Jason admits that Sonny is right. As Sam regains consciousness in the Intensive Care Unit, Sam hears a baby crying and assumes that it is her baby. When Jason sadly informs Sam that her baby is gone, Sam becomes hysterical and cries on Jason's shoulder.

Jason hears Sam wake up from her coma. She calls to him. He goes over to her side. Sam hears a baby cry and then sees a nurse walking by the room with a newborn in her arms. Sam asks Jason if that is her baby. Jason tells her it isn't her baby. Sam looks at him in confusion since his back was to the nurse. Jason tells her that her baby died at birth. Sam doesn't want to believe it and hits at Jason in anger. He grabs her and hugs her. She accuses Jason of lying to her about the baby and asks him if Sonny stole her baby. Jason tries to get through to her that the baby died at birth while she was unconscious. Sam gets so upset that she has to be sedated. Jason ends up leaving the room and feeling helpless on how to help Sam.

Sam wakes up to find she is alone in her room. She climbs out of bed and walks to the nursery. She sees a nurse walk by and asks her if she could bring her baby out to her and tells her last name. The nurse looks to Jason for help. Jason nods to the nurse to leave them alone. Sam accuses Jason of keeping her baby from her on purpose. Jason tells her that the baby isn't in the nursery but is at the funeral home now. Sam reacts irrationally and accuses Jason of being cruel. Jason tells her he is telling the truth. He cradles Sam in his arms and comforts her. He brings her back to her room. Sam realizes that Jason is telling her the truth about her baby. He explains what happened with her baby but doesn't tell her that the baby's stem cells were used to help save Kristina's life. He tells Sam that he got to see the baby and hold it after she died. Sam tells him that maybe her spirit was still in the room and knew he was holding her. Jason leaves her alone to rest and promises to call the funeral home and ask them to treat her daughter with respect when handling her.

Alexis shows up to visit Sam. She thanks Sam for helping to save her daughter's life. Sam asks her what she is talking about. Alexis realizes her mistake and doesn't know what to say. She ends up telling Sam that they took her baby's stem cells to help save Kristina. Sam looks accusingly at her and asks her if her baby had to die to save Kristina's life. Sam blames Alexis for forcing the surgery that caused her baby's death. Jason sets the record straight, telling Sam that it was Sonny who authorized the removal of stem cells from her baby's umbilical cord. Sam is shaken by the news and accuses Sonny of being glad that their baby didn't make it.

A grieving Sam lashes out at Sonny over his approval of the use of their daughter's stem cells. Sam accuses Sonny of being happy the baby died, and of only caring about Kristina and his children with Carly. Sonny tells her she's wrong and reminds her that the baby was his child too, but Jason suggests that Sonny leave the room until Sam calms down. Jason then sits with a sobbing Sam, and tries to help her cope. She turns her rage toward him, though, and demands to know why he's there with her now that the baby is gone. She tells him that as soon as she's okay, she'll leave Port Charles and get out of his life, but Jason clearly doesn't want to see her go. He holds her as she cries, and later takes her to Kristina's room. Sam resists, but Jason forces her to look through the window as Kristina recovers from her emergency surgery. Jason reminds Sam that her daughter is the reason that Kristina is alive, and that a piece of the baby will always live on because of it. For the first time since she collapsed, Sam is able to smile.

Sam is devastated when Jason brings the bad news that Dr. Meadows believes that Sam is not strong enough yet to get out of bed to attend her daughter's memorial service. Although Jason suggests that they could postpone the service until after Sam has recovered, Sam insists that she believes it is important for her to remember her daughter now. Later, Jason meets Emily and asks Emily to help Sam get ready for the service, because Sam is determined to attend the service.

Jason and Sam take flowers to the baby's grave and Sam asks Jason to say a prayer for the baby, because Sam still can not say goodbye to her daughter. As Jason prays for the baby, Sam breaks down in tears and cries on Jason's shoulder. When Sam returns to her hospital room, Sam thanks Jason for his support but admits that she is not yet ready to say good-bye to her daughter. Jason assures Sam that the ability to let go will

Sam has a dream that her baby lived after all and she and Jason bond with her daughter. She wakes up and realizes she is still in the hospital and had only been dreaming. She gets up out of bed and leaves her room. Meanwhile, Sonny and Jason question their financial advisor about where the important confidential file could have landed after they can't find it. The financial advisor, Myers, had taken the file out of his briefcase and had placed it near the other table on the floor before Sonny and Jason entered the room. Myers suggests that one of Sonny's kids took it. Sonny insists they don't have the file. Myers looks around the room and points out that he sees the file on the floor near the other table in the corner. Sonny tells him that it wasn't there before. Myers suggests that maybe it landed there later. Sonny warns Myers that he better not be trying to set him up or there will be consequences.

Sam goes to see Kristina in her room. Jason shows up to her room and finds she isn't there. He finds her in Kristina's room. Jason comes in and talks to Kristina. Alexis finds them there. She asks to speak to Sam outside the room. She apologizes to Sam for what she said to her that day and asks for her forgiveness. Sam seems to accept her forgiveness. Alexis asks her why she came to see Kristina. Sam tells her she wanted to feel close to her own daughter by being near someone she helped. Alexis tells her she understands why she would want to see Kristina but tells her that Kristina is still too weak to have visitors who she doesn't know. Jason tells her that they were just visiting and they leave and go back to her room. Sam tells Jason that she feels emptiness right now and wants to have another baby.

Jason accuses John of giving Ric the evidence on Sonny, but John laughs at him and denies it. Jason warns John that he'll expose his misdeeds to Carly when he gets the proof, but John isn't worried. John tells Jason he promised Carly he'd help her, and he did it to the best of his ability, and she trusts him. Jason continues to press him, but is interrupted by a call and leaves.

After Sam's OBGYN tells her that getting pregnant right away could be dangerous to both her and her baby, Sam sneaks out of her hospital room and passes out on the roof. Alexis goes to the roof of the hospital to get some snow for Kristina, and finds a collapsed Sam unconscious on the cold ground. Alexis manages to get Sam back in the hospital, and saves her from hypothermia and death. Jason arrives and immediately accuses Alexis of harming Sam, but Sam and Dr. Meadows assure him that Alexis in fact saved Sam's life. Jason asks Sam why she'd do what she did, and she apologizes and says she wanted to be sure her daughter got into Heaven. She tells him that she can't handle the pain, and that it won't go away, and Jason reminds her that it will take her time and that it won't be easy.

As Elizabeth wheels Samantha out of the Hospital, Elizabeth offers Sam her sympathy at the loss of her child and tries to reassure Sam that, one day, the pain of her loss will not be so severe. Sam is surprised when Jason suddenly arrives and declares that he wants Sam to go home with him. When Jason and Sam arrive at Jason's Penthouse later, Jason explains that he decided to wait until Sam returned home to decide what they should do with all of the baby's things they had bought. Later, Jason announces that he needs to be away for a while on some business for Sonny. Before leaving, Jason urges Sam not to push herself to deal with her baby's death before she is ready.

After Jason leaves, Emily arrives. Sam at first supposes that Jason arranged for Emily to keep Sam company, but Emily soon reveals that she had come to see Jason about a different, but urgent, matter. Although Emily is reluctant to discuss her problem with Sam, Emily finally confides that Nikolas has confessed to Helena's murder and Emily had hoped that Jason would be able to provide a solution to their dilemma.

Sonny meets with Jason and explains that Alexis has copies of the incriminating file and is demanding that Sonny suddenly have a change of heart while testifying and grant sole custody of Kristina to Alexis. Jason agrees that if Alexis ever does give that file to Ric, Jason and Sonny can kiss their criminal empire in Port Charles good-bye forever. Sonny and Jason plot to prove that Ric obtained the incriminating file illegally so that Sonny can take the stand in the custody hearing and surprise Alexis with proof that the incriminating file is inadmissible because the file was obtained illegally.

Later, Jason tracks Carly down at the hospital and quizzes Carly about the day that Meyer dropped the file off at the Penthouse. When Jason learns that Durant arrived after Michael packed his comic books, and that John was later alone with the packed boxes once they all arrived at the cottage, Jason begs Carly to realize that her father is still using Carly to bring Sonny to trial. Carly insists that Jason is mistaken and that Durant had nothing to do with that file, but Jason continues to suggest to Carly that it was Carly's father who slipped the incriminating file to Ric.

Sonny tries to help Sam through the pain of seeing their daughter's nursery again, and he assures her that he misses their baby, too. Alexis interrupts them as Sonny is saying goodbye to Sam, and she later reminds Sonny that he needs to have a "change of heart" during his testimony, and ask that Alexis get full and permanent custody of Kristina. Jason interrupts them, and Alexis reminds them both that if the tables were turned, Sonny would be doing everything to hold onto Kristina. She leaves the apartment, and Jason goes over to check on Sam. Sam agrees it's time to get rid of the baby's stuff, and so they box it up and give it to Max to be donated. Jason asks Sam if she's all right, and she tells him that it's the hardest thing she's ever had to deal with.

Carly walks in on Jason and Sonny in the penthouse, listening to the bug in John's apartment. Carly angrily turns off the tape recording and tells them that her father did not steal the file, and told her point-blank that he had nothing to do with it. Sonny explains Meyer's confession to Carly, and Carly is visibly upset to realize her father has lied and used her. She angrily demands in on the scheme to get back at John, but Sonny tells her she won't be a part of it. At Durant's apartment, John discovers the bug that Jason planted and demands to know what Carly knows about it. As Carly denies knowing anything, Jason realizes that he has lost the transmission from the bug and can no longer hear the conversation. As John grabs an angry Carly to prevent Carly from leaving, Jason suddenly bursts into the room and orders Durant to leave Carly alone. Although John continues to protest that he genuinely cares for Carly, Carly angrily advises her father to leave town and go back to New York City. After Carly storms away, Jason reminds Durant that John lost his daughter when John chose to betray his own daughter. John insists that Jason is wrong but Jason walks away from John

Jason and Samantha stop by Sonny’s on their way to Emily's wedding. Sam informs Sonny that she wants to testify for Sonny at the custody hearing. Sonny cautions Sam that he believes the recent experience of her baby's death is too traumatic for Sam to relive on the witness stand. However, when Sonny appeals to Jason to persuade Sam, Jason refuses to get involved.

Jason takes Sam home after she gets drunk at the wedding reception. She wants him to dance with her at the penthouse but he tells her she is stepping all over his feet and can't dance. She loses her balance when she tries to get him to dance with her. She falls over on the floor and Jason falls on top of her. She bends his head down and kisses him on the lips.

Jason takes Sam home. He tries to persuade her to go up to bed and get some sleep. Sam doesn't want to go to sleep and wants Jason to dance with her. Jason tells her she is too drunk to dance and is stepping all over his feet. Sam loses her balance and falls to the floor and Jason lands on top of her. This creates an intimate moment for them and Sam bends Jason's head and kisses him.

Sam testifies on Sonny's behalf during Kristina’s custody trial. At the same time, John grabs a wounded Meyer, and demands to know who shot him. Meyer begs for John to help him get out of town, but unbeknownst to John, it's a setup and Meyer is not really injured. Rather, he's wired and a feed is being sent back to Jason and Sonny's men, who clearly hear John admit to being the person who found the file in Sonny's apartment. Before Meyer's wire is discovered, Jason leaves the van and rushes to the dock where Meyer and John are standing. This gives Meyer time to run away, and John quickly has Jason arrested for threatening him and for possibly shooting Meyer. At the station, Jason tries to get back to Sonny's other men and tell them to get a copy of John's confession to the courthouse, but they are unable to hear him clearly on the phone and have no idea what he wants them to do. Jason tries to make another call to get Sonny the information in time, but Mac won't let him.

Carly is stunned when her father announces to everyone at the station that the file of evidence against Sonny cannot be used because he obtained it illegally from Carly's things. Despite Ric's warning of consequences, John officially admits to taking the evidence, and therefore makes it unusable against Sonny in any way. Carly runs out of the station, and Jason follows her and tries to comfort her. She apologizes for refusing to listen when Jason warned her that John was only after Sonny, but Jason reminds her that although her dad came to town for Sonny, his admission at the station was clearly all about Carly.

Jason calls Courtney to pick Diego up at Jason's Penthouse. When Courtney arrives, she demands answers and Diego finally admits that he believes that Sonny killed his father and might be intending to get rid of Diego as well. Diego is surprised to learn that Sonny wasn't even in Port Charles seventeen years ago, when Diego's father was killed. At Sam's request, Jason promises to investigate the death of Diego's father.

Sam burns dinner and gets her sweater soaked as she tries to put out the fire. As Jason helps Sam out of her wet sweater, they share a close moment. Jason helps Sam with her sweater and the two find themselves up close and personal. Jason grabs Sam and kisses her on the lips. Sam doesn't reject his kiss. She pulls away and tells Jason that she wasn't drunk this time and now knows that the kiss they just shared felt right to her now and that he kissed her this time. Jason doesn't know how to respond at first. Sam tells him she doesn't reject the kiss they just shared but thinks he probably does and tells him she is okay with that.

Jason tells her he shouldn't have kissed her. She tells him she is glad he kissed her. She tells him that she wants to be with him. Jason tells her that can't happen. Sam thinks he doesn't care about her the same way she cares about him and asks him if he is still in love with Courtney. He tells her he isn't still in love with Courtney. Sam suggests that he could leave for a couple of hours and come back and they can pretend they are just friends. Jason tells her it doesn't have to do with how he feels about her but that he can't be with her because of his lifestyle and how she may not be able to accept what he does for a living. Sam reminds him that he was there for her when she really needed him and that he was the only man in her life that stood by her and helped her instead of running away.

Sam changes her clothes and packs her things and tells him that she can't live with him anymore since he doesn't want her. He tells her she can still live there with him and that he isn't rejecting her. She tells him that he is rejecting her by not wanting to be with her. Sam leaves the apartment and heads to the elevator. She goes to push the button and Jason puts his arm across the button and stops her from pushing it. She turns around and looks at him. She asks him if he wants her to stay. He tells her he doesn't want her to leave.

Jason admits to Sam that he likes being with her but doesn't want to do anything that would hurt her in the long run. She decides to move into a room above Kelly's then heads to Jake's to drown her sorrows. Jason finds a drunken Sam at Jake's in Coleman's comforting arms, dancing with him! Jason reacts in a violent way, grabbing Coleman off of Sam and preparing to beat him. Sam interjects, and stops Jason before he can cause any damage. She tells Jason she asked Coleman to dance, and that Jason has no say in her life. Jason pleads with her to behave better, if not for herself than to honor the memory of her daughter. Sam responds by downing another whisky, so Jason leaves. Later, Sam finds Jason in the park. She thanks him for caring for her, and tells him he was right. Jason asks her to come back to his apartment, but Sam tells him she has to be on her own for a bit. She tells him that he saw through her at Jake’s, the party girl. That it is to protect her from getting too close, from getting hurt. But when she got pregnant, it changed her when she fell in love with her baby. She tells him that he wants to take care of her but that isn’t what she wants, that she needs to figure it out on her own and assures him that she will be okay.

Sonny and Jason talk about Kristina’s custody trial. He assures Jason that he will get full custody. Jason tells Sonny that Kristina will be scared and confused as she doesn’t know Sonny. It will be like when Michael was given back to the Quartermaines. Sam arrives and she assures Sonny that she will do everything to help him as he deserves to be in Kristina’s life. After Sonny leaves them alone, Sam thanks Jason again from stopping her from making a mistake that night at Coleman’s. But she doesn’t want him to make rescuing her a habit. She says she hopes Sonny will let her see Kristina if he gets custody as it helps her to be around Kristina.

Jason and Sam enter the courtroom and look on as the trial proceeds. Ric puts Alexis on the stand and has her admit outright that she took Kristina and planned to leave the country. Alexis again pleads for the right to keep her daughter safe from Sonny's life, and Jordan does her best to paint Alexis as the dangerous parent. In a last-ditch effort, Ric puts Sonny back on the stand and gets him to admit that Kristina is safe and happy with her mother. Jordan crosses, expecting Sonny to counter that the girl belongs with him, but Sonny surprises everyone when he suggests that the best thing for Kristina is joint custody.
