Penny Halliwell, "Grams" to the sisters, was the mother of Patty Halliwell, the sisters' mother. Grams was a powerful witch and raised the sisters after their mother died when they were young. Grams even helps the girls out by opening the Book of Shadows and turning it to the pages needed to vanquish the demon.
