A little background on Jade:
Jade is about 15, half a year younger than Dan when she lived on the streets with him and Nat. Known as a tough, impenetrable person, even Dan and Nat know little about her. She has no last name, though no one knows why, yet...
Jade stretched and rolled over in the back of a vibrating wagon. Fear shot through her as she saw a book lying on the rough bottom beside her. Scooping it up, she quickly stuck it back under her shirt, successfully disguising the curves thst identified her as a girl.
Looking up, she relaxed when she noticed that the tobacco-chewing farmer hadn't noticed. Sitting up, she diliberately thumped the bottom of the wagon with her boot, warning the farmer that she was awake.
"Well," the farmer said, casting a bored look her way,"See yer awake. Good riddance too. We're almost dere."
"We are?!"
Jerking upward, she grabbed everything that she owned, and threw it into an old potato sack. Nervousness surged through her and she stuck her shaking hands out at the sight behind her.
"yep," said the farmer and motioned to a line of trees leading to a cast iron gate.
"See that there gate?"
"Yes," Jade answered apprehensively.
"That's the school."
"Oh,"said jade into thin air as the farmer pulled in the reins and got down, spewing a long stream of tobaccon juice.
"Thanks,"she said, jumping down and startin towards the gate, anxious to get away.
"Wait a minute boy,"the man drawled, and jade felt her heart sink,"where's the money?"
Jade relaxed, she had forgotten their deal.
"Here,"she said, fishing a silver coin and pitching it perfectly in the air.
"Thankee kindley,"the old farmer said, his eyes gleaming as he caught it. Turning away, Jade never looked back as she set off for the road. When she reached the gate, she paused, a sudden fear filling her.
"Better get this over with,"she whispered, and took a deep breath...

Jo was outside looking for Nick, when she spotted someone at the gate. She was far enough away that she couldn't see who it was, but it seemed to be a boy. She was puzzled because she was pretty sure that all the boys were either inthe house, or barn, so she abandoned her search for Nick and headed for towards the gate. When she got closer, she didn't recognize the person, and looking them over, she said,"Hello. Can I help you?"...

"Hi,"replied Jade, stumbling a bit over the words,"I'm, uh, looking for the head of the school."

Jo eyed the new person again. Then she smiled and said,"You've found that person. I'm Jo Bhaer, owner of this school."
