"Mother, do I have to stay at Plumfield? I would much rather go
with you and Father to Europe," Caroline asked for the millionth time that day
as a maid helped her put her French overcoat on.
"Yes darling, you must go. This is a business trip for your Father and me. It
is not for children. Mrs. Bhaer is a very nice lady, and she and Mr. Riley will
take very good care of you. Just think Caroline, you will meet some children!
People your own age who you can spend time with! It will be fun! Now go and get
in the carraige, it is time to go. Go on!" Mrs. Vinton turned and gave an
exasperated sigh in her husbands direction as Caroline marched off and slowly
got into the carraige in the most unladylike fashion.
All the ride to Plumfield Caroline refused to say a word to her parents. But
even though she was silent, she had many thoughts in her head.
"You will only be staying a month, you can avoid the other children, just
act rude to them,"she thought. Children. That was just who she DIDN'T want
to meet. For the past 14 1/2 years her world had consisted of adults. She liked
it that way and she did not want it to change!
They pulled up to Plumfields gates, and Caroline strained her neck to look
out the window at the large house. She had never been to Plumfield, but her
parents had. They said that it was a nice large house in the town of Concord.
When Caroline looked at she thought that it did not look very big compared to
her house. Mrs. Bhaer, a widow, she had been informed, and her fiance'(well duh
she's a widow if she has a fiance!)Nick Riley had come round a few times to
Hollystone Manor, their very large Georgian style mansion located about 15 miles
outside of Concord, close to Boston. It was named after a house in the English
countryside that it resembled. Caroline had traveled to Europe 7 times with her
parents, but this time they were going alone. "Hmph,"she thought,"They
get all the fun!"
She saw a large group of people waiting on the front porch, obviously
expecting them. They stopped in front of the group, and a young man stepped up
to help her out of the carraige. He was so handsome that at first she forgot her
little plan to be rude, but she realized a second later and gave him a rude
look, but it was just a small one.
