Iffy
Renewals
As the seasons go by and the network audience slowly disapates, the
networks
are
being more patient with their new series, though it may not seem so.
Consider
ABC: back in May of 1996, they renewed only 1 new series, and that was
"The Drew Carey Show." This fall, they go in with at least 5 sophmore
series.
That's not to say all of those series were hits- but the alphabet is
being
patient.
In the next two editions of TV Talk, I'm going to look over the
network's
most iffy renewals, recap what the summer has meant for those series,
and
give dish on the fall prospects. First up: ABC and CBS.
ABC
Life
With Bonnie
The
Regular
Season: Bonnie never really found a solid audience, and more of
less
took advantage of it's "According To Jim" lead-in. It completely
collapsed
in the spring.
The
Summer:
Recently came back to the schedule with a thud. It's definitely the
weak
link of the Tuesday line-up, and scored near record low numbers for ABC
when it aired four times on Monday.
This
Fall:
Considering it's barely holding on on Mondays, it will probably die on
Fridays. Gone by November.
Less
Than Perfect
The
Regular
Season: Like "Bonnie," "Perfect" never really found an audience in
the regular season, but it did perk up when "Jim" moved to 9pm.
The
Summer:
Never left the schedule, and it really shouldn't. "Jim" seems to be the
perfect lead-in for the better "Perfect," and the show is regularly
holding
85-90% of its leading and even breaking into the top 30.
This
Fall:
Considering its competition this fall is "Good Morning Miami" and most
analysts expect "Jim" to top "Frasier," "Perfect" will have a home on
ABC
for years to come.
Dragnet
The
Regular
Season: LPremiered strong in "The Practice"s Sunday home, but slid
into oblivion by the end of the season.
The
Summer:
It's been airing on Saturdays for more than a month now and guess what?
Audiences appear to be finding it. Though 5.4mil viewers (last week) is
not the top 30, or even 50, it was only a few hundred thousand viewers
behind "The District," which was first.
This
Fall:
Though "Disney" is an odd lead-in, I don't know.... It's drawing only a
million viewers less now than ABC did during the regular season with
movies.
Could this work-out? ABC must be watching this very closely.
CBS
Still
Standing
The
Regular
Season: It did okay after "Raymond," but it was no "Becker."
The
Summer:
It has been in the 7-8mil viewer range for most of the summer,
respectable,
but not spectacular numbers.
This
Fall:
Opposite "Joe Millionaire," "Standing" is going to have a very rough
ride.
Hack
The
Regular
Season: BIt started off well on Fridays, but viewers eventually
wandered
away, and it was barely renewed.
The
Summer:
It's been dead on Saturdays, drawing less than 5mil viewers.
This
Fall:
CBS probably should have cancelled this, it's not going to do anything.
